Kenneth Patchen: There Are Not Many Kingdoms Left PASTORAL The Slums back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
There Are Not Many Kingdoms Left I write the lips of the moon upon her shoulders. In a
temple of silvery farawayness I guard her to rest. For her bed I write a stillness over all the swans of the
world. With the morning breath of the snow leopard I
cover her against any hurt. Using the pen of rivers and mountaintops I store her
pillow with singing. Upon her hair I write the looking of the heavens at
early morning. Away from this kingdom, from this last undefiled
place, I would keep our governments, our civilization, and
all other spirit-forsaken and corrupt institutions. O cold beautiful blossoms of the moon moving upon
her shoulders . . . the lips of the moon moving there . . .
where the touch of any other lips would be a profanation. PASTORAL The Dove walks with sticky feet Upon the green crowns of the almond tree, Its feathers smeared over with warmth Like honey That dips lazily down into the shadow ... Anyone standing in that orchard. So filled with peace and sleep

Kenneth Patchen I am the world crier, and this is my dangerous career...I am the one to call your bluff, and this is my climate. Born: Niles, Ohio, 1911
Died: 1972 My apologies for have written so little about Kenneth Patchen until now. I just didn't know that much about him, nor are there many sources around in the most common beat books. However, a biography about Patchen came out in March 2000, and is written by Larry Smith of Bottom Dog Press . See Larry's site for ordering information. A description and some kudos from Larry: " An Authorized Biography by Larry Smith; Bottom Dog Press, with A Consortium of Small Presses. Kenneth Patchen (1911-1972) emerges as a rebel poet who created stunning work for five decades. As poet, novelist, artist, performer, he becomes a model of an engaged artist. His and wife Miriam's life becomes one of the great love stories in American literature... It has taken more than 25 years for this poet's life to finally see the light of day in this rich, thorough, compelling biography...Hallelujah anyway! -Norbert Blei.

From the age of twelve, he kept a diary and read Dante, Homer, Burns, Shakespeare, and Melville. He attended Alexander Meiklejohn's Experimental College for one year and then the University of Wisconsin.
He was employed in a variety of jobs as a migrant worker in the United States and Canada. "Permanence," a sonnet, was published in The New York Times on April 10, 1932. He wrote more than forty books of poetry, prose and drama, including Before the Brave (1936), First Will and Testament (1939) and Journal of Albion Moonlight (1941), a prose work. In 1942, he published The Dark Kingdom in a limited edition of seventy-five copies and painted each cover individually in water color.
For more than thirty years, Patchen lived with a severe spinal ailment that caused him almost constant physical pain. The weight of this personal battle was compounded by his sensitivity to greater issues of humanity, and his poetry paid special attention to the horrors of war. With his work he tried to create a kind of sanctuary for the reader, apart from reality, where larger-than-life characters were motivated by their loving and benevolent natures. Kenneth Patchen died in 1972.

  • Journal of Albion Moonlight , 1941 - Patchen's novel about which Henry Miller said : " The Journal of Albion Moonlight is a work of unmistakable genius. Nothing like it has been written...in all English literature it stands alone... I know of no other American writer capable of giving us such a...truthful, fearless and harrowing account...Albion Moonlight is the most naked figure of a man I have encountered in all literature."
  • Collected Poems , 1969 - "Kenneth Patchen assembled this collection in his fifty-fourth year. Since space was the only restricting factor in his choice, readers are given a direct and first-time insight into the poet's own estimate of his concern. Additionally, the texts of many long-unavailable poems are provided", Jacket notes
  • Aflame and Afun of Walking Faces , 1970 - Comprises a full offering of Patchen drawings. To give some notion of the fables, imagine Mark Twain and Leopardi collaborating on a script for the Marx Brothers to act out at the birth of the world - by no means necessarily this one!
"The world of Kenneth Patchen is complete in its own fantastic system. Its population, animal, human and otherwise, has never been counted or described - all would-be census-takers have come back with a dazed sort of shining on their faces and have never been the same since.", John Holmes in

Kenneth Patchen Survey
The ability to overcome repression and the strictures of authority allowed Patchen to be one of the most inventive American poets of the century. This can be seen in his lexical poetry as well as the wide range of visual poetry strategies he explored during his creative life. Even his prose covered most of the avant garde bases that have been played out since. The selections presented here center on his work as a visual poet. One of the main characteristics of the Blakean line of visual poetry is that it is not simply visual, it is also visionary. Kenneth Patchen dedicated virtually all his books to his wife, Miriam. Since her husband's death, she has been more than generous in her assistance of his successors, toward Kaldron magazine, and in giving us permission to reproduce the work here. The editors of the present offering would like to dedicate this selection to her. Karl Young Go to arias from Sleepers Awake. Go to Painted Picture Poems Return to Kaldron home page.
