Rathdowney 2-7 Portlaoise 2-6 The drawn game was laced with controversy when only one umpire operated at either end, both sides claimed that they were denied certain scores at the end. Rathdowney claimed a late point but the umpire disagreed and the sides had to do it all again. The boys from the brewery town of Perrys were the reigning champions, and had to go to two meetings to claim the title a year earlier, as they did in the drawn game. Rathdowney set the pace as Portlaoise were slow out of the stalls, Willie Finane pointed from play after five minutes, Joe Fitzpatrick added two more in as many minutes then, when a great ball came out of defence by Steven Maher. Fitzgerald, the star of the drawn game added a second point and now only a goal separated them. Rathdowney had suddenly lost their way and gave away a few unnecessary frees. Exchange of points Then, ten minutes from half time Rathdowney scored a 65. Peter Gray lofted the ball goalwards, it broke to David Guilfoyle, he pulled first time and the ball beat defenders all ends up and suddenly, two goals divided the sides, another exchange of points left Portlaoise trailing 0-4 to 2-4 at the interval. The second half saw Portlaoise introduce Eddie Colbert for Stephen Phelan but again Willie Finane opened the scoring with an excellent point.

Camross 3-8 Kilcotton 2-0 A WEEK earlier these under 12s clashed in the league decider and after an evenly contested opening half, Camross pulled away for a comfortable victory. For the opening 20 minutes Kilcotton did everything right. Camross managing only points from Tom Dunphy and Zane Keenen. Then as the half time approached the one player Kilcotton really feared - Keenan - who had been well-contained took off at high speed, passing a few defenders and fired a powerful shot to the net and at the interval Camross led 1-2 to 0-0. On the change-over Camross stepped up a gear, within two minutes Tom Dunphy set up the unmarked Joe Phelan and he scored goal No. 2. From three on Keenan took control, he hit five marvellous points in between shooting a second goal. Kilcotton never conceded and two late goals by Trevor Abbott and Matt Whelan only helped to put respectability on the scoreboard. For Camross: Dean Delaney, Mark Conroy, Conor Doran, the Dooley twins, Joe Phelan, Tom Dunphy and Keenan shone. The losers had fine players in Ken Campion, Matt Whelan, Luke Maher, Mary Fitzpatrick, Trevor Abbott, Brian Stapleton, Pat Bergin and Karen Cuddy. Camross: Dean Delaney, Adrian Delaney, Mark Conroy, Mark Conroy, Lorcan Burke, Conor Doran, Daryl Dooley, Craig Dooley, Andrew Collier, Zane Keenan 2-6, Joe Phelan 1-0, Darren McCartney, Tom Dunphy 0-1, Ray Delaney 0-1, Tom Bourke. Subs: R. Drennan for T. Bourke, M. Handcock for T. Dunphy, G. Dooley for R. Drennan, F. Moore for D. McCartney, O. Scully for R. Delaney.

IRONWEED
A film review by Mike Trout
Well, it's here. I finally saw IRONWEED last night, in a sneak preview in Albany for cast and extras. It opens nationwide today (12 February).
First, a warning. Film reviews are subjective by definition. This one will be worse than usual, as I have a personal interest in the film. It's the biggest thing to happen to Albany in years. However, I will do my best to be as objective as possible. I saw the film with three other people, two of whom were in the movie just as I was, and I tried to listen carefully to their comments and integrate them with my thoughts.
IRONWEED is a good film. It's not great, but I think it's better than the general reviews indicate. I found it to be well-written, brilliantly acted, and powerfully moving. The general story flow was surprisingly smooth.
The biggest problem is with editing. The movie is too long2 hours 16 minutesand there are obvious segments that should have been deleted. However, other scenes show signs of excess editing, causing some confusion in the story line and many dangling subplots. We finished filming in early summer and the film was released in mid-December. To me, that seemed like not enough time to do a careful editing job. Perhaps it was rushed to completion in time to be eligible for the 1987 Academy Awards.

They Came Around The Horn
Author: Regina Phelan
ISBN:
Price: Work was in progress on the Transcontinental Railroad line. Workmen employed by the Union Pacific, mostly of whom were Irish, were laying track westward across the prairie from Omaha. Thousands of Chinese were working their way eastward. People continued to come to California, not to dig for gold, but to settle down. Now that Tom Phelan had a stake in his pocket for having fought in the Civil War, he was eager to be on his way. While staying with his sister in San Francisco, Tom met Lucky Baldwin, the Comstock Lode millionaire who suggested Tom purchase land in the valley of San Gabriel where the cattle had roamed the hills for over a hundred years. Tom and his friend Mr. Woodward joined a cattle drive heading south, again setting out on another long journey. The material from this book was based on the work of Catherine Phelan along with many other stories handed down by various members of the family.

Alcock had a confrontation with Garrison today alone in his office. I asked Alcock what had happened when he came out. He said that he had told Garrison that he didn't believe anything Garrison was saying about the CIA etc., and that none of it could be proved in court. Alcock added, for good measure, what no-one else in the office (except Boxley) believed it either. Then Alcock said :You know, Jim, we get disturbed when we see you listening to Boxley, giving you all that bull..." "I've learned one thing about Boxley," Garrison replied. "He's right." Alcock told me this as though he was exasperated by Garrison, but also as though he was amused by him. "That guy," says Alcock, shaking his head and grinning slightly, "he's something, isn't he?" Alcock went on again about "all these bums" like Beckham and Jack Martin supposedly working for the CIA.
