About The Threepenny Review The Threepenny Review , launched in 1980, has built up a healthy national prestige, attracting contributions from authors such as Susan Sontag and Gore Vidal.... Published quarterly, The Threepenny Review is ample and handsome, in appearance not unlike the New York Review of Books NYRB : this is another America speaking."
Times Literary Supplement
Its writers:
Its readers:

The Threepenny Review continues to be one of the brightest, liveliest, most intelligent and culturally alert journals in the country. It's one of the very few magazines that give one the feeling that there really is a conversation going on in this country about the arts and about ideas. I always read it with pleasure." Robert Hass "For literature in the traditional sense to continue in America, we must continue to have serious, eccentric, imaginative magazines. Alas, there aren't many any more that have that character. The Threepenny Review is one of the few, one of the very best. Therefore indispensable."

    An Interview with Robert Pinsky
The following interview originally appeared in the Spring 1998 issue of Meridian a new journal at the University of Virginia, and is reprinted by permission of the editor.
Robert Pinsky is the Poet Laureate of the United States. A renowned poet, critic, and translator, his most recent books are The Figured Wheel: New and Collected Poems 1966-1996 (Noonday, 1996) and his translation of Dante's Inferno (Noonday, 1994), which received the Harold Morton Landon Translation Award from the Academy of American Poets.
The following interview was conducted by phone. Pinsky, at his home in Boston, was finishing a photo-shoot. Midway through the interview, we were briefly interrupted as Pinsky showed the photographers out. The break has been included here because of the shift in mood it illustrates. Pinsky was allowed to talk about the pressures of his office as well as his hopes, long enough to permit us to glimpse the man behind the post.
    Ted Genoways Meridian
How did you find out you had been named Poet Laureate?

I came home from giving a poetry reading, and there were three messages on my answering machine from the Library of Congress. I thought it probably wasn't an overdue book. [laughs]

Trusting the Sounds of Poetry: Robert Pinsky has a Mission Six months after the kickoff of the Poet Laureate’s Favorite Poem Project, the effort has garnered more than 2,500 written responses. His latest book, too, is intended to help more people hear poetry.
    by Jane Hodges
Robert Pinsky, United States Poet Laureate, has just one lesson for America: Poetry is a musical experience. "I’m much more interested in how a poem sounds," he says, meaning how it sounds aloud. He’s not suggesting that honoring poetry means merely attending poetry readings. "I’d like people to trust that they can read a poem aloud, in their own voice."
Pinsky knows a book can only go so far in explaining poetry as a spoken, physical art. That’s where his second lesson comes in. Last spring, Pinsky launched the Favorite Poem Project during National Poetry Month. Though the kick-off reading for the project fell on a clammy April evening, the kind that sends the most die-hard New Yorker home in a cab to watch reruns, a line of umbrellas starting at the Town Hall Theatre began to snake its way down West 43rd Street and toward Sixth Avenue well before the theatre’s doors opened.
Crusty New York natives might have wondered are they there for a Broadway show? Spice Girls in town? Not exactly. The umbrellas were waiting for a star-studded list of folks to read verse. None of the readers billed themselves as poets, but each one had a favorite poem to share. TV newsman Ed Bradley read Nikky Finney’s "Uncles" and radio celeb Garrison Keillor read his favorite, James Wright’s "The Blessing." Politician Geraldine Ferraro read Rudyard Kipling’s "If," choreographer Bill T. Jones read from Derek Walcott’s epic "Omeros," pop artist Laurie Anderson read Seamus Heaney, and folk singer Suzanne Vega read T.S. Eliot’s "Preludes." High schoolers chose and read work by Sylvia Plath and Roald Dahl.
