" ‘Conform, go crazy, or become an artist.’ I have a rubber stamp declaring those words, and they pretty much delineate my life," says Nancy Springer, whose writing began with a few hours stolen from her conventional life as a housewife and mother and led to her writing both children’s books and adult novels for a living. She has won two Edgar Awards, and last year she received a nomination for the Agatha Award for her EQMM story "Juggernaut" (6/01).

Ellery Queen
Besides being the gentleman detective whose apartment on West 87th Street, New York, is as well known as Sherlock Holmes' flat in Baker Street, London, and whose father is Inspector Richard Queen of the New York Police Department, Ellery Queen is a writer composed of two individuals, Frederic Dannay and Manfred B. Lee. Their collaboration started in 1929 when the twenty-three-year-old cousins lived in Brooklyn. They entered a detective story contest organized by a magazine, and won it with The Roman Hat Mystery, which had an immediate success. This was an obvious pointer, and Dannay and Lee gave up the business careers they had planned and took to writing. They have published twenty-five novels by Ellery Queen and four under the name Barnaby Ross, five books of their own short stories, many books of short stories by others, two books of radio stories, eight juvenile mysteries, and two volumes of detective bibliography, as well as editing Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine. Manfred Lee lives in Roxburg, Conn., is interested in music, and is married and has eight children. Frederic Dannay lives in Larchmont, N.Y., collects books, is also married, and has two children.

Dupin, in his 1841 story, "The Murders in the Rue Morgue." The acknowledged father of the mystery story, Poe continued Dupin's exploits in novels such as "The Mystery of Marie Roget" (1842) and "The Purloined Letter" (1845). "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" is the most famous example of a mystery style known as the locked room, in which "a murder victim is found inside an apparently sealed enclosure and the detective's challenge is to discover the murderer's modus operandi." (Crime Classics) Poe was one of the first to shift the focus of mystery stories from the aesthetics of the situation to a more intellectual reality, moving the story from "a focus on the superficial trappings of eerie setting and shocking event to a study of the criminal's mind." (Crime Classics) As important as his contributions were to the genre, Poe was influenced greatly by the early work of Charles Dickens who, with his contemporary, Wilkie Collins, made major contributions to the genre as well. Dickens wrote many stories that contained elements of mystery and suspense, including "Bleak House" (1853). "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" (1870), an unfinished masterpiece, is the perfect murder mystery because Dickens death left it forever unsolved.

33. Ellery Queen
Biography, list of novels with synopses, and information about television and movie adaptations.
http://www.mindspring.com/~mkoldys/
E llery Queen is a unique fictional detective. Created by cousins Frederic Dannay and Manfred Lee as an entry in a writing contest, he is regarded by many as the definitive American whodunit celebrity, rivaling Nero Wolfe as the logical successor to the Master, Sherlock Holmes. The cousins wrote dozens of books, and possibly hundreds of radio scripts, about the author and amatuer sleuth who shared an apartment with his Dad, Inspector Richard Queen of the New York Police Homicide squad. On stage, in the movies, and on television, the EQ legacy was continued, though not always in a manner faithful to the authors' original conceptions. This page is a guide to the novels, movies, and tv shows. The many radio plays are not covered, partly because there are so many of them, and also because most of them have been lost. Use the navigation buttons at page bottom to learn more about the EQ novels, other writings, movies, and television productions. Please don't hesitate to write us with comments or suggestions.

The Lazy Gink's Guide to a Complete Hammett Collection
Dashiell Hammett's novels are easy to find, but getting all his short stories is a much tougher job. Two recent collections will give you most of them, and all the best and most popular ones: Crime Stories and Other Writings and Nightmare Town . After that you'll mostly have to go to collections from the 1940s and 1950s. (Some of the early stories were published under pseudonyms, but I'll skip that level of detail here. Check the full bibliography Here is the full text of Hammett's first published short story, "The Parthian Shot" (from Smart Set , October 1922): When the boy was six months old Paulette Key acknowledged that her hopes and efforts had been futile, that the baby was indubitably and irredeemably a replica of its father. She could have endured the physical resemblance, but the duplication of Harold Key's stupid obstinacyunmistakable in the fixity of the child's inarticulate demands for its food, its toyswas too much for Paulette. She knew she could not go on living with two such natures! A year and a half of Harold's domination had not subdued her entirely. She took the little boy to church, had him christened Don, sent him home by his nurse, and boarded a train for the West. Here is the full text of Hammett's second published short story, "Immortality" (from
