The Rights (and Wrongs) of Ayn Rand Robert Bass No thinker, perhaps, has had more influence upon contemporary libertarians than the novelist and non-academic philosopher, Ayn Rand. For that reason alone, her case for libertarian rights deserves attention. Also important is the fact that her arguments are interesting in their own right and have often been misunderstood, misrepresented or ignored. As George Smith has commented, “there has appeared relatively little in the way of competent reflection on Ayn Rand as philosopher. Accounts ... written by [her] admirers are frequently eulogistic and uncritical, whereas accounts written by her antagonists are often hostile and, what is worse, embarrassingly inaccurate.” At least four factors have combined to discourage serious attention to her work by academic philosophers. First, she was prima facie unworthy of attention because her views were developed and expressed not in scholarly treatises but in novels and – later – in articles in which philosophical discussion was fused with cultural commentary and political advocacy. Her writing was often rhetorical and hyperbolic, directed to the mass readership accessible to a best-selling author instead of to the rather more critical audiences of the output of university presses. A second factor leading to neglect was that the particular positions she held – including an uncompromising defense of rational self-interest in ethics and of laissez-faire capitalism – were quite distant from the overwhelming mainstream consensus (when she wrote) in favor of some form of welfare-state liberalism. A further factor which has contributed to neglect of Rand’s ideas is that her arguments are often informal and inductive. They are presented by way of her fiction, and, so far as this is the case, it is left to the reader to judge the psychological and social plausibility of dramatizations of her principles and their alternatives. Finally, and least excusably, Rand invited neglect, contempt, and opposition by employing her considerable rhetorical skills to denounce anyone who disagreed with her and especially “modern philosophers” as evil, corrupt, and irrational

Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life DIRECTED BY: Michael Paxton REVIEWED: For a film about the founder of Objectivism, Ayn Rand: A Sense of Life is not very objective. Less a documentary than a 145-minute panegyric to the author/philosopher, the movie plays as a long testament to the triumph of Ayn Rand's will. Writer/director Michael Paxton tries to illustrate the artist's ideas, to portray her sense of life. Unfortunately, only half a picture emerges. There are lots of interviews with friends and admirers but none with critics. Opposition to her ideas is blamed on the prejudices of liberals and Communists. Questionable actions by Ms. Rand, such as testifying as a friendly witness before the House Un-American Activities Committee and writing a pamphlet against Communist screenwriting, are brushed over. The best parts of the documentary are excerpts of television interviews with Ms. Rand: the author comes across as a provocative thinker who was eager to address criticism. Too bad Paxton didn't take a similar attitude in this documentary. At one time, up until as recently as late 1998 or early 1999, I described (and regarded) myself as a somewhat sympathetic critic of Objectivism and thought there might possibly be something salvageable in Rand's philosophy if one stuck as close as possible to her political theory. (I'm a "green libertarian"/classical-liberal/free-market-capitalist myself.) My mind was changed in part by a close and thorough examination of her epistemological writings and in part by (thanks to the Internet) extensive correspondence with lots of people who have tried to put her principles into practice. My own evaluation of her is now very different indeed from that of her followers, and in my book Objectivism and the Corruption of Rationality: A Critique of Ayn Rand's Epistemology , I attack the very foundation and centerpiece of her philosophy: her allegedly groundbreaking work in epistemology, from which "Objectivism" takes its name. Rand upheld individualism over collectivism and egoism over altruism. She staunchly defended reason as the tool that sustains and nourishes the individual against the forces that can weaken it. Born in Saint Petersburg, Russia, Rand immigrated to the United States in 1926. She worked sporadically as a screenwriter and script reader in Hollywood, California, until 1943. Her first two novels, We the Living (1936) and Anthem (1938), portray dystopias and dictatorships as warnings against monolithic sociopolitical systems such as Communism and Fascism. Atlas Shrugged (1957), a lengthy and popular novel, depicted five characters in a fictional America moving toward a bizarre form of socialism. The book was criticized for its severe characterizations and raised concerns about the harshness of Rand's search for the perfect egoist. After the book's publication, Rand stopped writing fiction. She worked as a public speaker and began to publish a newsletter, first called The Objectivist Newsletter (1962-1965), then The Objectivist (1966-1971), and later The Ayn Rand Letter (1971-1975). It was her relatives in Chicago who made it possible for her to leave the Soviet Union, and with whom she first stayed after arriving in the U.S. After changing her name to Ayn Rand, she left Chicago for Hollywood, and eventually found work as a reader at Cecil B. DeMille's studio. On the set of DeMille's King of Kings , she spied a tall, handsome man named Frank O'Connorand they were married in 1929. During the Depression, Rand began to focus on her writing, producing several short stories and plays (these early works are collected in The Early Ayn Rand ) as well as Night of January 16th ("Penthouse Legend" on Broadway)
