Winner of the American Academy of Poets' 1997 Walt Whitman Award, Ras proves to be an heir to Whitman's spirit in one crucial aspect : her poems celebrate. They may celebrate pain and death as well as celebrating life, but even in the darker moments these poems resonate with a powerful positive force. The title from the book comes from a line in her introductory poem, "You Can't Have Everything": You can have the purr of the cat and the soulful look of the black dog, the look that says, If I could I would bite every sorrow until it fled, and when it is August, you can have it August and abundantly so. Here we have affirmation without aphorism, a vision of light that refuses to reject the shadows. Consequently, it is a vision that is very real. Bite Every Sorrow exudes a warmth that can only come from genuine, uncontrived feeling. Ras returns frequently to life's "simple pleasures" in her poems, but simple pleasures are difficult for poets, for there is the ever present risk of becoming overly sentimental. Ras avoids this pitfall thanks to an eye for detail and an ear for voice. Consider "In the New Country," for example, in which an immigrant mother explains in that voice of wide-eyed wonder unique to children and Americans: I love America. Ham bones and shoes.
