This article, by Ross Sinclair of the SSC Megapode Specialist Group first appeared in issue 37 of Species , the SSC newsletter.
The coup in 1999 and subsequent economic collapse in the Solomon Islands has resulted in the islanders being even more dependent on their natural resources for sustenance and cash. Nowhere is this more true than on Simbo Island, where local people derive most of their cash income from the sale of eggs of the Melanesian megapode ( Megapodius eremita ), locally called Lape.
Over 180,000 eggs were harvested in 1998 alone. According to Simbo Islanders, throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the number of birds on the island and the harvest of eggs declined dramatically. Unfortunately, it appears a similar fate is befalling almost all nesting fields of colonial-laying megapodes, many of which are now abandoned.
Since the introduction of the new management plan, Simbo Islanders believe there are now more megapodes on the island, although the theft of eggs and predation of hatchlings by feral cats and dogs remain problems. WWF and the Megapode Specialist Group are continuing to work with Simbo Islanders to help them address these problems and achieve their stated aim of having "Lape Forever".

"I'm glad to see the Fruitmarket filling a gap in Scotland's contemporary art scene which normally studiously ignores talent under its nose till it's too late. Where do you go to see work by Glasgow graduates Jenny Saville or Douglas Gordon? Ironically the nearest place is probably New York."
CLARE HENRY, The Herald, October 1999 (VISIONS FOR THE FUTURE 1) "The strongest argument for exhibitions to focus more closely on individual artists could be witnessed at The Fruitmarket Gallery, Edinburgh... The Fruitmarket's Visions for the Future series kicked off with the pairing of Martin Boyce and Ross Sinclair. Here was an ambitious exhibition that focused upon the concerns of both artists in a concise and exciting manner."

10 April - 2 May 1999 Claire Barclay, Martin Boyce, Roddy Buchanan, Ross Sinclair, Bryndis Snaebjörnsdóttir, Simon Starling, Rose Thomas, Clara Ursitti. 'If I Ruled The World' is an ongoing group exhibition project curated by Glasgow based artists Bryndis Snaebjörnsdóttir and Ross Sinclair. Individual vision and ideological optimism formed the loose conceptual base for the project and for the artists involved. For the initial exhibition in Spring 1999, the artists travelled to The Living Art Museum, Reykjavik to develop their work in the cultural and physical environment of Iceland.

No future without dreams! Each person possesses the power to live to his or her full potential, to make the impossible possible. Ross Sinclair calls out to us: assume responsibility already in dreams.
"LKW Lebenskunstwerke" consciously crosses the borders between "art" and "life": artistic utopias do not remain designs, but become experience and experiment. Models "between design and social sculpture, between factory life and commune experience" (Paolo Bianchi) are shown on the four floors of the Kunsthaus.

    Coroner warns on cannabis suicide
By Fran Tyler Coroner Garry Evans has stepped into the cannabis debate, warning the Government to be cautious over decriminalisation. He says the drug is too often associated with youth and that evidence is mounting that it is causing psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia, psychosis and depression. "Young people who take their lives are commonly users, often very heavy users of cannabis," he said. Mr Evans, the Wellington coroner, made the comments in his findings on the deaths of Lower Hutt's Matthew Ross Sinclair, 28, who committed suicide in January 2002, and John William Cash, who died after he inexplicably ran into his burning Stokes Valley house on June 14, 2000. Mr Sinclair had been a daily cannabis user from about the age of 14 years and had mental health problems that began when he suffered a head injury as a child. At the hearing his father, Ross Sinclair, said cannabis was the main cause of his son's problems, over and above his mental condition. He would enter into cycles of heavy cannabis use, binge drinking and depression. "'This was the course that would take his life," he said.

Rather than explore thematic similarities or differences between the works of artists in this diverse region, the twin exhibitions Greyscale and CMYK divide works into two categories, across national and regional borders, according to the lowest common denominator, depending on whether they are made in black and white or colour. In many cases, the mono- or polychromatic nature of the works is deliberate and integral to the piece. Taking their titles from graphic design, these exhibitions allow works to be included from multifarious media including drawing, painting, photography, film and video and have been developed in close co-operation with host venues including:
