"The deep moral ambiguity that we have towards violence lies at the root of this."
Arundhati Roy, March 2002 on Democracy Now
In each time, there may come one who has such beauty of spirit, and such a clarity of vision, as can cause a healing on a world wide scale by the force of truth alone. We may have the good fortune to live in such a time, and She may be among us now ;^)
"What I mean by the Algebra of Infinite Justice: it's really arithmetical. What are the things that count in the calculus of power? Who are the people who count? Who are the people who don't count? Whether you look at Madeline Albright saying 500,000 children dying in Iraq was a price worth paying, or whether you look at the war in Afghanistan; the world media does not even want to know how many people were killed in Afghanistan, how many innocent people died in Afghanistan. We don't want to follow up: The U.N. reports that 7.5 million people were about to starve, and suddenly, it's off the news. The only way to find out is to go to Afghanistan, and if you can't go, you don't know what's happening. But they don't count anymore.

Arundhati Roy
Born in 1961 in Bengal, Arundhati Roy grew up in Kerala. She trained as an architect at the Delhi School of Architecture, but became better known for her complex, scathing film scripts. She wrote and starred in In Which Annie Gives it Those Ones , and wrote the script for Pradip Kishen's Electric Moon . Media attention came when she spoke out in suapport of Phoolan Devi , who she felt had been exploited by Shekhar Kapur's film Bandit Queen . The controversy escalated into a court case, after which she retired to private life to work on her first book, The God of Small Things , which was published in 1997. The half-million pound advance on this book, more than Vikram Seth's for A Suitable Boy, shot her to fame again. As the daughter of Mary Roy , the woman whose court case changed the inheritance laws in favour of women, she was closely acquainted with the Syrian Christian traditions which feature prominently in the book. She says "a feminist is a woman who negotiates herself into a position where she has choices.." The God of Small Things, won Britain's premier book prize, the Booker McConnell, in 1997. Although Indian authors such as Salman Rushdie and Rohinton Mistry have featured in the Booker shortlist, and Rushdie's Midnight's Children won the 'Booker of Bookers', Roy is the first non-expatriate Indian author and the first Indian woman to have won this prize. To top it all, this happened in 1997, India's 50th anniversary of independence from Britain. As always, the exclusions and choices of the Booker judges created some controversy, with some critics praising the lush imagery of Roy's book while others referred to it as 'tripe'. The book has also attracted

TALKS ABOUT INDIA, THE OBSCENITY CHARGE SHE FACES
AND HOW WRITING IS LIKE ARCHITECTURE. BY REENA JANA she claims she never rewrites or revises. Her first novel, "The God of Small Things," has just won the English-speaking world's most premier honor, the Booker Prize, is published in more than 20 nations, has hit No. 1 on the Sunday Times of London's bestseller list and is climbing the New York Times list. It has earned her in excess of $1 million so far and international media attention as she faces obscenity charges in her native India for a sensual description of inter-caste lovemaking that serves as the novel's coda. And beyond all this, she's good. Real good. Butt-kicking good. So good, in fact, that John Updike, when reviewing "The God of Small Things" for the New Yorker, compares her mind-boggling debut to that of Tiger Woods. She's Arundhati Roy, and she's remarkably tiny hovering around 5-foot-2 despite the black platform shoes she's wearing and new literary lioness persona. An explosion of curly black hair frames her face, which showcases nearly childlike, saucer eyes and cheekbones that erupt the moment she talks or smiles. Now in her mid-30s, Roy grew up in Kerala, the Marxist Indian state in which "The God of Small Things" is set. The novel is a vertiginously poetic tale of Indian boy-and-girl twins, Estha and Rahel, and their family's tragedies; the story's fulcrum is the death of their 9-year-old half-British cousin, Sophie Mol, visiting them on holiday.

Under the nuclear shadow
Arundhati Roy, Booker prize-winning author, looks at the conflict over Kashmir from her home in New Delhi
Observer Worldview

Sunday June 2, 2002
The Observer

This week as diplomats' families and tourists quickly disappeared, journalists from Europe and America arrived in droves. Most of them stay at the Imperial Hotel in Delhi. Many of them call me. Why are you still here, they ask, why haven't you left the city? Isn't nuclear war a real possibility? It is, but where shall I go? If I go away and everything and every one, every friend, every tree, every home, every dog, squirrel and bird that I have known and loved is incinerated, how shall I live on? Who shall I love, and who will love me back? Which society will welcome me and allow me to be the hooligan I am, here, at home?

Arundhati Roy chosen for US prize

Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy has been selected by the US-based Lannan Foundation for its fourth annual $350,000 Prize for Cultural Freedom. The money will be donated to various people's organisations. Times of India, 23 January 2003 Arundhati's speech on confronting Empire
"It is a myth that the free market breaks down national barriers. The free market does not threaten national sovereignty, it undermines democracy... But remember this: We be many and they be few. They need us more than we need them."

Life so far
"When I think back on all the things I have done I think from a very early age, I was determined to negotiate with the world on my own. There were no parents, no uncles, no aunts; I was completely responsible for myself." Arundhati Roy left home at 16 and then lived in a squatters' camp, in a small hut with a tin roof, within the walls of Delhi's Ferozshah Kotla. She made a living selling empty beer bottles. It was six years before she saw her mother again. Eventually, Roy joined the Delhi School of Architecture, moonlighting as an architect's artist. She married a fellow architecture student, Gerard Da Cunha . Their marriage lasted four years. At this stage, neither had a great love for architecture and so they quit. "We went off to Goa because we decided that we would be flower children. We would make cake and sell it on the beach and make a living that away. Gerard was really an incredible person so we could do it for seven months but then I found I couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't take the tourists." Returning with no money, she sold a ring which a friend had given her at a fruit juice shop for Rs300 and a banana shake. She took a job at the National Institute of Urban Affairs, found a barsati near the dargah at Nizamuddin and hired a bicycle, "It cost Rs2 a day and it was better than going by bus."
