Knight, who has researched Sabatini's life and work extensively. Biographical Notes RAFAEL SABATINI was born April 29, 1875 in Jesi, Italy. His mother was English, his father Italian. His parents were operas singers who became teachers. For instance, John McCormack was among their pupils. At a young age, Rafael was exposed to many languages, attending school in Portugal and, as a teenager, in Switzerland. By the time he was seventeen, when he went to England to live permanently, he was the master of five languages. He quickly added a sixth language - English - to his linguistic collection. He consciously chose to write in his adopted language, because, he said, "all the best stories are written in English." After a brief stint in the business world, Sabatini went to work as a writer. He wrote short stories in the 1890s, and his first novel came out in 1902. It took Sabatini roughly a quarter of century of hard work before he attained success with Scaramouche in 1921. This brilliant novel of the French Revolution became an international best-seller. It was followed by the equally successful

I like to read an occasional historical romance, even though my teenaged son looks at me worriedly when I do. I enjoy most of them, because when you take away the romantic aspect of it, you are often left with a crackling good adventure yarn. There is nothing new about this, since the same type of books were being written in the 1920s by Rafael Sabatini. Sabatini was born in Italy in 1878 to an Italian father and an English mother. Both were opera singers, and since their work caused them to travel extensively, they sent young Rafael to school in England. He excelled in both reading and languages, and the love of foreign tongues remained until he had not only mastered English, but also Portuguese, French and German.
Though not his initial book, Sabatini's first success was SCARAMOUCHE, a romantic novel with the French Revolution as a backdrop. It was published in 1921. The following year, he released CAPTAIN BLOOD, a story of love and adventure on the High Seas. During the 1930's, Hollywood filmed both of these swashbuckling novels, and CAPTAIN BLOOD transformed Errol Flynn into a star. Sabatini's books were well received in Hollywood, and several others were filmed. Sabatini was a fast writer, managing to turn out a book a year. His body of work consists of 31 novels, 8 short story colections and 6 books of poetry.

    The Last of
    the Great Swashbucklers
by Jesse F. Knight Rafael Sabatini was born April 29, 1875 in what was then the small town of Jesi, Italy, which is near the Adriatic and the seaport of Ancona. Today, Jesi is basically a suburb of Ancona. From the sketchy evidence I have been able to gather, it appears that Rafael was illegitimate. It is interesting to observe that from the very beginning of his life, there were matters that would provide literary fodder for the romancer for the rest of his life. For instance, the town of Jesi is part of the territory Cesare Borgia carved out of Italy for himself. The illegitimacy of Cesare Borgia too must have appealed to Sabatini. He would ultimately write more than half a dozen books on the Italian figure and his era. The idea of illegitimacy also plays a prominent part in Sabatini's work. From Scaramouche to The Lion's Skin to The Tavern Knight , as well as several other works, illegitimacy is a key element in each of these novels. Sabatini's parents were well-known operas singers in their day, travelling around the world. They had met, as performers, in the far-away Philippines. His mother, Anna Trafford, was English from the Liverpool area, and she was an accomplished pianist as well as a singer. Vincenzo Sabatini, Rafael's father, was Italian. The birth of Rafael in Jesi was no accident, since Vincenzo's father also lived there. At some point the couple either married or common law took over, for Rafael's mother never went by any name other that Mrs. Sabatini.
