Leonie Nelly Sachs, born in Berlin on December 10, 1891. As refugee, arrived in Sweden with my mother on May 16, 1940. Since then living in Stockholm and active as writer and translator. Biographical Note
Nelly Sachs's career as a poet of note started only after her emigration, when she was nearly fifty years old. Her first volume of poetry, In den Wohnungen des Todes (In the Houses of Death), 1947, creates a cosmic frame for the suffering of her time, particularly that of the Jews. Although her poems are written in a keenly modern style, with an abundance of lucid metaphors, they also intone the prophetic language of the Old Testament. The collections Sternverdunkelung (Eclipse of Stars), 1949, Und niemand weiss weiter (And No One Knows Where to Go), 1957, and Flucht und Verwandlung (Flight and Metamorphosis), 1959, repeat, develop, and reinforce the cycle of suffering, persecution, exile, and death which characterizes the life of the Jewish people, and becomes transformed, in Nelly Sachs's powerful metaphorical language, into the terms of man's bitter, but not hopeless, destiny. Of her poetic dramas, the miracle play Eli (1950), broadcast in West Germany as a radio play, has been widely acclaimed. Nelly Sachs has received awards in Sweden and Germany, among them the Prize of the Swedish Poets Association (1958) and the "Friedenspreis des deutschen Buchhandels" (1965). In 1961 her collected poems were published under the title of

Nelly, (she was called Leone at birth) Sachs was the only child of a
wealthy Berlin industrialist. The family lived in the Tiergartenviertel,
one of Berlin's better neighbourhoods. Because of her family's wealth,
Nelly was educated by private tutors. She studied music and dancing.
Her early love of literature came from home. By the age of seventeen, Nelly began writing poems in traditional,
rhymed forms. She also wrote plays for puppets that had a fairy-tale flavour. Although some of her early work appeared in newspapers. She wrote mainly for her own enjoyment. In 1921, Nelly Sachs published her first full-length work, a volume entitled Legenden und Erzaehlungen ( Legends and Stories).

    Sachs, Nelly,
Nelly Sachs Corbis-Bettmann in full NELLY LEONIE SACHS (b. Dec. 10, 1891, Berlin, Ger.d. May 12, 1970, Stockholm, Swed.), German poet and dramatist who was transformed by the Nazi experience from a dilettante into a poignant spokesperson for the grief and yearnings of her fellow Jews. When, with S.Y. Agnon , she was awarded the 1966 Nobel Prize for Literature , she observed that Agnon represented Israel whereas "I represent the tragedy of the Jewish people." The daughter of a prosperous manufacturer, Sachs grew up in the fashionable Tiergarten section of Berlin and began writing verse at age 17. Romantic and conventional, her poems of the 1920s appeared in newspapers but were mainly for her own entertainment. As the advent of Nazism in Germany darkened her life, she sought comfort in ancient Jewish writings. In 1940, after learning Sachs's lyrics from those years combine lean simplicity with imagery variously tender, searing, or mystical. Her famous "O die Schornsteine" ("O the Chimneys"), in which Israel's body drifts upward as smoke from the Nazi death camps, was selected as the title poem for a 1967 collection of her work in English translation. Her best-known play is Eli: Ein Mysterienspiel vom Leiden Israels Eli: A Mystery Play of the Sufferings of Israel
