J.D. Salinger ...What gets me about D.B., though, he hated the war so much, and yet he got me to read this book A Farewell to Arms last summer. He said it was so terrific. That's what I can't understand. It had this guy in it named Lieutenant Henry that was supposed to be a nice guy and all. I don't see how D.B. could hate the Army and war and all so much and still like a phony like that. I mean, for instance, I don't see how he could like a phony like that and still like that one by Ring Lardner, or that other one he's so crazy about, The Great Gatsby . D.B. got sore when I said that, and said I was too young and all to appreciate it, but I don't think so. I told him I liked Ring Lardner and The Great Gatsby and all. I did, too. I was crazy about The Great Gatsby . Old Gatsby. Old sport. That killed me. Anyway, I'm sort of glad they've got the atomic bomb invented. If there's ever another war, I'm going to sit right the hell on top of it. I'll volunteer for it, I swear to God I will. The Catcher in the Rye

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback J(erome D(avid) Salinger (1919-) American novelist and short story writer. Salinger published one novel and several short story collections between 1948-59. His best-known work is THE CATCHER IN THE RYE ( 1951), a story about a rebellious teenage schoolboy and his quixotic experiences in New York. "What really knocks me out is a book that, when you're all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn't happen much, though." Holden Caulfied in The Catcher in the Rye J.D. Salinger was born and grew up in the fashionable apartment district of Manhattan, New York. He was the son of a prosperous Jewish importer of Kosher cheese and his Scotch-Irish wife. In his childhood the young Jerome was called Sonny. The family had a beautiful apartment on Park Avenue. After restless studies in prep schools, he was sent to Valley Forge Military Academy (1934-36), which he attended briefly. His friends from this period remember his sarcastic wit. When he was eighteen and nineteen, Salinger spent five months in Europe in 1937. From 1937 to 1938 he studied at Ursinus College and New York University. He fell in love with Oona O'Neill , wrote her letters almost daily, and was later shocked when she married Charles Chaplin, who was much older than she.

J.D. SALINGER Reclusive Author Salinger started publishing short stories in the 1940s in magazines including the Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and the New Yorker . His 1951 novel The Catcher In the Rye was a best-seller; the tale of troubled adolescent Holden Caulfield, it remains a particular favorite of high school and college students. Always a private man, Salinger became increasingly reclusive throughout the 1950s and eventually stopped making public appearances or statements of any kind. He refuses requests for interviews and has not published since 1965, though he reportedly continues to write at his remote home in Cornish, New Hampshire.
Extra credit : Salinger had a love affair with author Joyce Maynard in the early 1970s, which Maynard described in her 1998 memoir At Home In the World . In 1999 Maynard put up for public auction her personal letters from Salinger.

    Topic Salinger Characters
The Fat Lady writes "I found this on the internet
"I learned some other surprising things about S. in the course of my inquiries. I learned that in addition to the Glass-family chronicle, he has also written a screenplay, a draft of some kind, in which his faithful Glass-family narrator and alter ego, Buddy, is forced to confront criticism of the increasingly murky and mystical turn S.'s later Seymour-obsessed Glass-family stories have taken. (I'd pay to see that.) I've also heard, though I'm less sure of this, that he may have written some film scripts under a pseudonym for European producers." has anybody heard this before?"
Note: I've never heard anything like these rumors, though I've heard lots before. I doubt that Salinger (as anti-film as he was, especially later in life) would have done any screenwriting. he didn't need the cash, after all... Anyone else know anything like this? comments?

The Praises and Criticisms of J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye by Eric Lomazoff ( lommie@ix.netcom.com Ever since its publication in 1951, J.D. Salinger's The Catcher in the Rye The Catcher in the Rye When studying a piece of literature, it is meaningful to note the historical background of the piece and the time at which it was written. Two J.D. Salinger short stories, "I'm Crazy" and "Slight Rebellion off Madison," were published in periodicals during the 1940's, and introduced Holden Caulfield, the main character of The Catcher in the Rye . Both short stories were revised for later inclusion in Salinger's novel. The Catcher in the Rye was written in a literary style similar to prose, which was enhanced by the teenage slang of the 1950's. It is a widespread belief that much of Holden Caulfield's candid outlook on life reflects issues relevant to the youth of today, and thus the novel continues to be used as an educational resource in high schools throughout the nation (Davis 317-18). The first step in reviewing criticism of The Catcher in the Rye is to study the author himself. Before his novel, J.D. Salinger was of basic non-literary status, having written for years without notice from critics or the general public.

A Brief Biography of J. D. Salinger Sarah Morrill
Where was he born and all that David Copperfield type crap?
Jerome David Salinger was born in New York in 1919. His older sister’s name is Doris. His father, Sol, was a Jew who was in the meat and cheese business. His relationship with his father was distant and he didn't even bother to attend his funeral. His mother, of whom he was very fond, was Irish Catholic. Being half Jewish was a source of enormous conflict for Salinger. The cold relationship with his father, his conflict from being half Jewish, and especially his traumatic experiences in World War II, were negative aspects of his life which shaped his personality and his fiction. Let's stop right here. Why do you want to know about Salinger?
When you read about the life of J. D. Salinger, ask yourself why you want to know about him. The answer to that question is more important than the details of his biography. Right? Are you impressed by the literary value of his work? Are you especially intrigued by the fact he's a recluse? Do you feel as if you know him? That he understands you? Are you hoping that in real life he's like Buddy Glass? (He's not, but more about that later.)
It's not abnormal to be curious about an author who's made an impression upon you. A good friend of ours found out who John Updike's dentist was and seriously considered switching dentists just on the chance he might some day be sitting in the waiting room with him. And the life of Hemingway is a great read and it sheds some light on his fiction, but why do so many people want to know about Salinger?
