William Saroyan William Saroyan was an internationally renowned Armenian-American writer, playwright and humanitarian. His fame, and his most enduring achievements as a writer, date from the 1930's. He dazzled, entertained and uplifted millions, with hundreds of short stories, plays, novels, memoirs and essays; they continue to charm and touch us today. Saroyan's talent was first projected to the world through the medium of an Armenian-English newspaper, Hairenik of Boston. In 1934, at the age of 26, with the publication of his first book The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze , William Saroyan became an overnight literary sensation. His first successful Broadway play was My Heart's in the Highlands in 1939, and in the same year, Saroyan was the first American writer to win both the Drama Critic's Circle Award and the Pulitzer Prize for his play, The Time of Your Life . He refused to accept the Pulitzer Prize on the grounds that, "Commerce should not patronize art...," and he added, "it is no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan is unique among writers. He acknowledged the Armenian culture as an important source of literary inspiration, especially notable in the book-of-the-month choice

Saroyan became involved in the Group Theatre in New York where he worked with Harold Clurman Lee Strasberg Elia Kazan and Clifford Odets . Members of the group tended to hold left-wing political views and wanted to produce plays that dealt with important social issues. The group produced his play, My Heart's in the Highlands (1939). The following year he was awarded the

William Saroyan
William Saroyan, the son of Armenian immigrants, was born in Fresno, California, in 1908. He left school at age thirteen, but he remained an avid reader. He worked as a telegraph messenger, newsboy, farm laborer, and office clerk, and he drew from these experiences to write short stories, novels, and plays. His first publication, the story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" (1934), began a successful writing career. Five years later, his play The Time of Your Life won the Pulitzer Prize. He refused to accept the award, however. He believed that businesses should not support the arts (the Pulitzer Prize was established by Joseph Pulitzer, a newspaper publisher) and that the play was "no more great or good than anything else I have written." Saroyan's success continued. His novel The Human Comedy was published in 1942 and made into a movie, for which he won an Academy Award in 1943 for the best writing of an original motion picture story. Saroyan became very popular through the 1940s and 1950s; altogether, he published more than 60 books. He died in 1981. In the last book published during his lifetime

Resmi eðitimle bir türlü yýldýzý barýþmayan Saroyan on beþ yaþýnda okulu terk etti. 1934 yýlýnda ise Randon House yayýnevi tarafýndan The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze, and Other Stories isimli kitabý yayýnlandý ve o yýlýn en çok satan öykü kitabý oldu.
1939 yýlýnda The Time of Your Life oyunuyla Pulitzer Ödülü'nü kazandý, ödülü reddetti.

William Saroyan
Editor Janet Podell wrote, "For William Saroyan, the author of numerous plays, short stories, novels, and memoirs, writing was a way of affirming certain cherished ideals; the supremacy of love, hope, beauty, and optimism, the triumph of human dignity over advertisty and death, the promise of the American Dream." Saroyan, was born to Armenian immigrant parents in Fresno, California on August 31, 1908. The critic, William Peden, stated that The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze (1934), Sayoran's first book of short stories, "brought a freshness of vision, simplicity, gaiety, and sympathetic understanding of little people at a time when the genre was becoming enmired in an angry social consciousness or basically meaningless slice-of-life realism." Much of his work was descibed this way. However, some felt it could also be naive, sentimental and pompous. He was awarded both the Pulitzer Prize in Drama (which he refused) and the New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for The Time of Your Life (1935). In 1941, he went to Hollywood to write

William Saroyan
William Saroyan was born August 31, 1908, to immigrants from Armenia. Drawn to writing from boyhood, he sold his first story to a magazine when he was 20 and working at a San Francisco telegraph office. In 1934 his story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" appeared in a story magazine and captured national attention. The story's "boyish ebullience," in the words of Current Biography, "buoyed up the spirits of American readers." It was followed by hundreds of short stories, essays, novels, plays, autobiographical sketches and miscellaneous items in well over 40 books. "A literary nonconformist, (Saroyan) writes in an original, freewheeling style directly from experience, but turns personal incidents into allegorical events in which his readers are induced to find themselves," Current Biography continued. He was honored on a 29¢ commemorative stamp issued May 22, 1991. The stamp, a part of the USPS Literary Arts series, was also part of a joint issue with the Soviet Union, of which Armenia at the time of issue was still a component republic. Scott 2538. "Saroyan holds a probably secure place in American literature on the strength of several masterpieces, such as his Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Time of Your Life, which express his exuberant personality, his wonder and innocence, his insight into human nature and his love and sympathy for mankind."

"I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia. See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia."
