the RWCT project is promoting a coherent and theoretically grounded set of teaching methods in nearly 20 countries From the earliest conversations about the RWCT Project between Liz Lorant of the Soros Open Society Institute in New York and the directors, the project was planned to transfer ideas and methods to educators so that they could become not only practitioners of the methods, but also credible trainers of other educators. dissemination plans vary
At a conference in Alexandria, Virginia, last May, staff from each country drew up plans for this second-year dissemination. Here is a sampling of those plans. In Macedonia, two new workshops are opening up for elementary and high school teachers, and these will be directed by RWCT-trained teachers. An additional strand of workshops will be opened up for university-based educators, and these will be led by returning RWCT volunteers, team-teaching with RWCT-trained Macedonian teachers. In Kazakhstan, eight new groups of teachers, plus an additional group made up of university-based educators and teacher training center staff, will be led by the teachers who participated in the project this year. The RWCT-trained teachers will begin by offering demonstration workshops in Almaty, Taldykorgan, Karaganda, Semipolatensk, Pavlodar, Petropavlosk, Lisakovsk/Kostenoi, and Atyrau. Interested teachers may then sign on to participate in a series of RWCT workshops.

Sir Walter Scott by Andrew Crumey Walter Scott was born in Edinburgh on 15 August 1771 (a plaque at 8 Chambers St marks the approximate spot). His father (also called Walter) was a Writer to the Signet (solicitor); his mother Anne Rutherford was the daughter of a professor of medicine. At the age of 18 months his right leg was rendered permanently lame by polio, and as an infant he was sent to his grandfather's farm in the Borders. He would divide his time between Edinburgh and the Borders for the rest of his life. In 1775 the family moved to a more spacious house at 25 George Square, where Scott was to live until 1797. He was educated at home until October 1779, when he was enrolled at the High School of Edinburgh. He also attended Kelso Grammar School during stays in the Borders. He studied law at Edinburgh University from 1783, with interruptions because of his illness. He was indentured in his father's legal practice on 31 March 1786, but did not qualify as an advocate until 11 July 1792. Scott was to continue in his legal career until retiring in 1830. Scott's interest in traditional ballads was formed in childhood, and during his stays in the Borders he began collecting them. He was also interested in German literature, and his first publications were translations of ballads by Gottfried Augustus Burger (1796), and of Goethe's "Gotz von Berlichingen" (1799).

Sir Walter Scott was a native of Edinburgh, being educated in the city's High School and University. He was a lawyer by profession and eventually became a Sheriff-Depute (a local judge) in Selkirkshire. Although he was eventually to reach his chief fame as a novelist whose work was read throughout Europe the early part of his literary life was largely devoted to the translation of German works and to poetry. Much of the latter was romantic in nature and concerned with the traditions of the Scottish-English border. In 1802-3 he published his three volume Ministrelsy of the Scottish Border and in 1805 his first considerable original work The Lay of the last Minstrel. However, despite his success he refused the offer of the poet-laureateship and eventually found his international fame as a poet eclipsed by that of Byron.
It was only in his mid-40s that he eventually turned to the novel with the publication in 1814 of Waverley, a book which gave its name to a whole series of subsequent works, some of the most successful of which, like Waverley itself dealt with the two Scottish Jacobite rebellions of 1715 and 1745 against the new Hanoverian kings of Great Britain. while others were concerned with earlier historical periods such as the Scottish religious wars and with the history of Edinburgh.

    Sir Walter Scott
Scottish Novelist and Poet Oh what a tangled web we weave,
When first we practise to deceive!
    Sir Walter Scott
was born on August 15, 1771 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Scott created and popularized historical novels in a series called the Waverley Novels. In his novels Scott arranged the plots and characters so the reader enters into the lives of both great and ordinary people caught up in violent, dramatic changes in history. Scott's work shows the influence of the 18th century enlightenment. He believed every human was basically decent regardless of class, religion, politics, or ancestry. Tolerance is a major theme in his historical works. The Waverley Novels express his belief in the need for social progress that does not reject the traditions of the past. He was the first novelist to portray peasant characters sympathetically and realistically, and was equally just to merchants, soldiers, and even kings. Scott wrote frequently about the conflicts between different cultures. Ivanhoe (1791) deals with the struggle between Normans and Saxons, and the Talisman (1825) describes the conflict between Christians and Muslims. The novels dealing with Scottish history are probably Scott's best. They deal with clashes between new commercial English culture and an older Scottish culture. Many critics rank "Old Mortality" (1816), "The Heart of Midlothian" (1819), and "St Ronan's Well" (1824) as Scott's best novels. Other works in the Waverley series include "Rob Roy" (1817), "A Legend of Montrose" (1819), and "Quentin Dunward" (1823).
