David Sedaris 's sardonic humor and incisive social critique have made him one of National Public Radio Morning Edition's most popular and humorous commentators. Sedaris also is the best-selling author of Barrel Fever: Stories and Essays (1994), a collection of stories and essays based on his experiences working odd day jobs, and his personal misadventures as an elf in a department store in The Santa Land Diaries . His most recent story collections are Naked (1997) and Holidays on Ice (1997) . One of his trademarks, in the words of one Newsweek reviewer, is his "nicely nerdy, quaverying voice," and the Washington Post observes that, "On the air, Sedaris's shrewd, wickedly funny pieces prick up your ears; his tart voice never gets lost in NPR's Sargasso Sea of sincerity."
Sedaris also writes plays with his sister Amy Sedaris, including "Incident," "One Woman Show" and "The Little Freida Mysteries." New York Times reviewer Ben Brantley asserts, "This brother-and-sister playwriting team has an unparalleled ear for American cultural cliches and an equally fine hand for twisting those cliches into devastating absurdity."

  • David Sedaris David Sedaris Satirical master David Sedaris is well-known for his public radio commentaries featured on the program This American Life. He is the author of "Naked" and the best-selling "Barrel Fever." Sedaris's essays appear regularly in The New Yorker. Print story E-mail story "Sedaris' sardonic wit will already be familiar to listeners to National Public Radio's Morning Edition, but the venom he exposes in these pagesproves he is more than a cuddly curmudgeon. Here he lets loose with adevastating comic ire worthy of Dorothy Parker. Demonstrating low tolerancefor human foibles, his misanthropic humor is vindictive and nasty. More than once it crosses the line of good taste, but it's also extremely, relentlessly funny. The short stories in this collection dwell on themes ofdomestic hell and self-delusion as dysfunctional families tear each otherapart and losers refuse to see how pathetic they are." -Booklist

By Keith Phipps To his regular readers, David Sedaris needs no introduction, as his life is his most frequent topic of discussion. The product of a large, colorful family of Greek descent, Sedaris grew up in North Carolina before leaving for college and a quasi-vagabond life of work and travel, as memorably described in his best-selling 1997 collection Naked. One such odd job, a seasonal gig as a Macy's Christmas elf, brought Sedaris to national attention when he converted the experience into the piece "The Santaland Diaries." First heard on NPR in 1992, "Santaland" led to more NPR stints, including frequent appearances on This American Life, and more writing opportunities for outlets such as Esquire. But until his Naked editor more or less forced him to quit, Sedaris kept his day job as an apartment cleaner. His latest collection, Me Talk Pretty One Day, deals with, among other topics, speech therapy and moving to France, where Sedaris lives with boyfriend Hugh Hamrick. This year also saw the production of Sedaris' fifth play, which was co-written with sister Amy Sedaris, best known as the creator of the Comedy Central series Strangers With Candy.

(Paperback (trade)) Shrewd, wickedly funny... one of Americas most prickly, and most delicious, young comic talents.
-Washington Post Book World Uniquely affecting, Sedariss stories infest the mind as if they were your own dark memories.
-Entertainment Weekly Original, acid, and wild. . . wacky writing par excellence.
-Los Angeles Times Sedaris ekes humor out of the blackest of scenarios, peppering his narrative with memorable turns of phrase and repeatedly surprising double-edged wit. . . suggesting a caustic mix of J. D. Salinger and John Waters.
-Publishers Weekly Barrel Fever and Other Stories (Audiobook (abridged cassette)) "A satirical brazenness that holds up next to Twain and Nathanael West."
-The New Yorker Like a Diane Arbus photograph or an Aubrey Beardsley illustration, a David Sedaris story takes us to that gritty side of life we might wonder about but never come to know. Their works shock us, yet still draw us in. Often all we can do is throw our heads back and laugh because, whether we admit it or not, we find humor in perversity. The perverse brings a frisson , making dysfunctional families wondrous and interesting, turning forbidden worlds into places we want to visit. In these stories and essays, Sedaris and his sister, Amy, poke brilliant, wicked fun at their own family pointing out those foibles that make people weak and lovable. Sedaris' voice has a youthful quality that perfectly matches his material. You might believe he actually did swallow Mike Tyson's's false teeth.

David Sedaris made his comic debut recounting his strange-but-true experiences of being a Macy’s elf clad in green tights, reading his "SantaLand Diaries" on National Public Radio’s Morning Edition. Sedaris’ sardonic humor and incisive social critique have since made him one of NPR’s most popular and humorous commentators. At the end of each of his commentaries, David Sedaris was identified as an apartment cleaner in New York City. But Sedaris isn’t just a working Joe "who happens to put out these perfectly constructed pieces of prose," as Morning Edition’s former producer Ira Glass puts it. The great skill with which Sedaris slices through euphemisms and political correctness proves that he is a master of satire. Everywhere he goes David Sedaris delights his audience with his irreverent style and great humor.
"On the air, Sedaris’ shrewd, wickedly funny pieces prick up your ears; his tart voice never gets lost in lost in NPR’s Sargasso Sea of sincerity. On the page, Sedaris seems even more accomplished; this slim volume (Barrel Fever) establishes him as one of America’s most prickly, and most delicious, young comic talents."
    - The Washington Post
"Playwright, author, radio star, and retired elf David Sedaris may be the most brilliantly witty New Yorker since Dorothy Parker."

    David Sedaris: Just a writer
by Seth Rogovoy (WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass., April 24 1998)
After three bestselling volumes of riproaringly wicked autobiographical essays, David Sedaris finds himself the object of a different kind of bidding war this one a battle among those who want to claim him as one of their own, as a sort of poster boy or representative specimen. "It's interesting how you can write a book and then you can sort of be claimed by different groups of people," said Sedaris, the author of "Naked," "Barrel Fever" and "Holidays on Ice," in a recent phone interview from his home in New York. "The Greeks have recently claimed me, so now I'm on these Greek- American radio programs and doing interviews for newspapers in Athens," said Sedaris, who is of Greek extraction. "I've written one story about being Greek." "And the Tourette Syndrome crowd embraced me based on one story that I wrote," said Sedaris, referring to "A Plague of Tics," which recounts compulsions such as licking light switches and pressing his nose against the car windshield that afflicted him as a child. "So for the thing I'm doing in the Berkshires, the homosexual part of me will be in attendance," said Sedaris, referring to the occasion prompting our interview.

David Sedaris is one of the funniest writers and performers around. There is a lot of material on him on the net. When I wrote a bud.com item on Sedaris' New York essays (which never got posted) I was surprised nobody had gathered links together on an unofficial web page. This was just a start at an attempt to gather it all together. But not too long after I pulled this page together Travis Paddock started a much more complete Sedaris page , so you really should visit there. Sedaris did essays on New York City from October 5 November 23rd, 1998 on NPR's Morning Edition . You can listen to them. I've pulled together a page with a list of all This American Life episodes has pieces on. I had planned to have links directly to the real audio of the shows, but Travis has now pulled a page together (just scroll down a little bit). This was just the start of links to Sedaris material on the web. I had planned to add more and organize it better when I had the chance, but now Travis has done that..

"And what does one do on the fourteenth of July? Does one celebrate Bastille Day?" It was my second month of French class, and the teacher was leading us in an exercise designed to promote the use of one, our latest personal pronoun. "Might one sing on Bastille Day?" she asked. "Might one dance in the street? Somebody give me an answer." Printed in our textbooks was a list of major holidays alongside a scattered arrangement of photos depicting French people in the act of celebration. The object was to match the holiday with the corresponding picture. It was simple enough but seemed an exercise better suited to the use of the word they. I didn't know about the rest of the class, but when Bastille Day eventually rolled around, I planned to stay home and clean my oven.

Right now, this is just a rough list of This American Life programs Sedaris has a piece on (I still need to go through and format it better). This American Life is a wonderful weekly radio program which airs on many public radio stations. They were saying in their newsletter they are going to move their real audio files to WBEZ, so I was going to wait until then to put direct links to the real audio of the shows. But Travis now has a page with direct links to the real audio. You can also listen to each show in the TAL archives . All of the shows are worth listening to (and I'm hoping to put together pages with links to all the shows with Dan Savage, Sarah Vowell and others are on).

(Raleigh News Observer.)
