'Raging Rivers of Narrative Flow':
A Lunch with Vijay Seshadri
Theresa Cahn-Tober The last time I applied to graduate school, it was 1958 and I was eight months pregnant. Preparing for a meeting with the head of Psychology, I surmised that my happy condition might strike her as a handicap. Women's Lib, at the time, was only a glimmer in the eye of a few deranged souls, who, like myself, kept Betty Friedan's The Feminine Mystique right next to their coffeepots. New mothers were not welcome in colleges. Stuck with the external evidence, I planned a strategy of hiding my internal state. It took only minutes to convince the professor that my forthcoming offspring was basically a biological mistake, whose care would be entirely relegated to a bevy of servants, such as the rich women of royal Russian or German heritage were accustomed to employ. Being of such background herself, the professor bought the ruse. A half-century later, I am again applying to graduate school. This time it's the MFA writing program at Sarah Lawrence. Again, I am preparing to meet the department head. Again, I have a handicap: now it's my age. How will this director look upon an aspiring student old enough to be his mother? The night before the interview, I rip apart my closet, deciding finally on the purple outfit. A recent acquisition, it stamps me as NOW. I'll be the terrified old woman cowering in the corner

Sanskrit and sanskriti as weapons
Murli Manohar Joshi's promotion of 'spiritualism' as the core of Indian 'culture' and his plan to make Sanskrit compulsory for Classes X to XII are part of Hindutva's elitist, patrician agenda to favour further the already privileged. WITHIN barely three years of coming to power in a coalition at the Centre, the Bharatiya Janata Party has so purposively pushed through so many changes in the fields of education (especially school education), social science research and culture, that it will take a future secular successor perhaps twice as long to roll them back. Take the latest - and ugly - controversy over the National Film Awards, leading to the resignation of three members of the jury, including film-maker Pradip Krishen, and sharp criticism of the selection process by some other members, including actors Soumitra Chatte-rjee and Dhritiman Chaterji. This marked a particularly sordid point in the politicisation of such awards through the packing of the jury. True, during the past decade or more, the awards have lost some of the prestige vested in them in the 1960s and the 1970s. But perhaps never before was the jury dominated by such crudely partisan supporters of one narrow, parochial ideology. Some became its members solely by that virtue: the dance-teacher of a Minister's daughter, an MLA innocent of the cinema, the private secretary of member of Parliament, the editor (Tarun Vijay) of an RSS organ.... The process of rating films too was deplorably rigged, with a poor mythological film (Pandavas) being awarded.

Somdev, Vandana triumph
By Our Sports Reporter CHENNAI, JUNE 23. Somdev K. Dev Varman and Vandana Murali of Tamil Nadu claimed their second consecutive AITA title in the boys' and girls' under-16 sections respectively in the Maruthi Rao Memorial CATA-AITA zonal tennis championship which concluded at the CLRI courts, Adyar, on Saturday. Training under the watchful eyes of coaches Ilyas Hussain and Ramalinga Reddy of BAT, top-seed Somdev has been getting better with each and every outing. Today, he was at his dominating best, belting out winners at will, in a 6-3, 6-1 defeat of statemate, 14-year old Vijay Sundar Prasanth in an hour and 15 minutes. The seventh-seed Vandana put up a spirited display to quell a resurgent fightback from the top-seed Poonam Reddy in an exasperating encounter which lasted two hours, to win at 7-5, 7- 6. Somdev raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set, breaking Vijay in the first and third game, but the Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan student (Chennai) Vijay broke the top-seed's serve immediately in the fourth. And that was all he could do, as the Tripuri boy ran away with the first set.

78. A Tag Without A Chit
A performing poet as well as a literary poet, over the past two years she hasperformed in Scotland, Mexico, Germany, Vienna and London. vijay seshadri.
http://english.rutgers.edu/atag.htm
Roundtable "A Tag Without a Chit" Susan Wheeler, Moderator We'd be naive to assume that aesthetic/political divides among poets were a recent invention or that they were an optional feature of our field's current terrain. But even fifteen years ago crossovers, or hybrid poetries, were fewer than they are currently. A casual reader of poetry, for example, could be assured that a book he purchased from most university presses and certainly the larger publishing houses would conform to the conventions of the reigning aesthetic, and a L=A=N=G=U=A=G=E proponent could subscribe to the journals and patronize the presses which devoted themselves exclusively to this work. And the beats were still the beats, the New York School still the New York School, and "political poetry" was a genre onto itself. Of late, the boundaries have blurred. Academic presses such as Wesleyan and Harvard are publishing work to confound a bluestocking; poets who just five years ago might have been called "experimental" or "post-language" are showing a reluctance to cross all of whom might have been called "mainstream" poets off the list of those doing interesting work. My students read from several lineages that until recently would have been exclusive: Spicer, say, Bogin, Dunbar, Hugo Ball.
