Charlotte M. Smith 120 West Bradford Place Madison, MS 39110 C RAFTS My resume shows little evidence that I have ever used the pine needle basket weaving media or its dimension in my previous work. Even though I have always had an interest in this media, it has not been until the past several years that I have pursued it seriously. Drawing upon my American Indian heritage and love for nature, I have attempted to create something by hand that is not only decorative, but functional as well. My goal is to make each basket an individual work of art. Gathered pine needles are washed and rinsed. The brown covering, that binds needle bundles together, called the sheath, is removed. The pine needles are placed in the sun to dry. When making a color coordinated basket, it is necessary to dye the needles and raffia to match. As I begin to work, I have a very general idea of how I want the basket to turn out. That concept may change several times before completion, depending upon my inspiration as I work. The end product is a culmination of nature's provision and time and the vision that God has imparted to me. More information about the artist.

Simple: she helped invent the Gothic, in large part due to the influence of her works on Ann Radcliffe . (She also helped invent Romanticism and William Wordsworth There are "Gothic" elements in only a few of Smith's early works, for by her own admission she was uninterested in literary sensationalism and in the supernatural; adverse financial circumstances (a profligate and irresponsible husband, largely) led her to novel-writing in the first place (she preferred poetry), and the success of her first novel, Emmeline (1788), showed her that sales could be positively affected by the inclusion of the sorts of dramatic scenes she was writing. Cecilia Fernandez University of Miami The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith: Plurality of Vision According to some critics, Charlotte Turner Smith, (1749-1806), "was the first poet in England whom in retrospect we would call Romantic" (Curran, Intro, The Poems of Charlotte Smith ). The first edition of her Elegiac Sonnets , written in 1783 while she was in debtor's prison with her husband and children, brought her sudden fame. Her most direct beneficiary among the canonical male poets was William Wordsworth who says in an essay that Smith was a poet "to whom English verse is under greater obligations than are likely to be either acknowledged or remembered" ( The Prose Works of William Wordsworth: Critical and Ethical , Vo III). Smith, as with many other women writers of the period, was largely forgotten by the second half of the nineteenth century. My paper, "The Romanticism of Charlotte Turner Smith: Plurality of Vision," is not only an exploration of her aesthetics and politics, but also an effort to begin to begin the process of remembering. Charlotte Turner Smith embodies oppositions through the blurring of boundaries between disparate forces. But the harmony that Smith represents does not obliterate differences; rather, her inclination is to accomodate a multiplicity of positions at once. As Smith opens her text to opposing voices, she melds the dualities of the inner and the outer, the private and the socio- political, the material and the spiritual to form an organic whole that suggests connections and possibly the reconciliation of opposites. In my paper, I will discuss Smith's poetics in terms of her attempt to reconcile conflict by asserting the necessity of connection in two of her works

She left school when she was twelve years old to enter society. She married in 1765 Benjamin Smith, son of a merchant who was a director of the East India Company. They lived at first with her father-in-law, who thought highly of her business abilities, and wished to keep her with him; but in 1774 Charlotte and her husband went to live in Hampshire. She died at Tilford, near Farnham, Surrey, on the 28th of October 1806. She had twelve children, one of whom, Lionel (1778-1842), rose to the rank of lieutenant-general in the army. He became K.C.B. in 1832 and from 1833 to 1839 was governor of the Windward and Leeward Islands.

About the Exhibition View Exhibition View Descriptive Catalog T iny tomes are, first and foremost, actual books. Even though they are diminutive in size, measuring less than three inches in height, they share the same attributes as their larger or conventionally sized counterparts. They are collections of written or printed pages, which include poetic verses or narrative prose on a variety of topics, and are sewn or bound together in paper, cloth or leather. I nitially, miniature books were produced for practical purposes. Publishers issued miniaturized versions for a wider patronage; their reduced size made them more transportable than contemporary folios. Religious works, then the classics, and children's books were the first to be published. The first printed miniature book on record is an Officium Beatae Virginis Maria x 1 ") printed in 1475, a mere twenty years after the introduction of moveable type. N early four centuries elapsed before the 19th century invention of photolithography revolutionzed the production of minature books. Publications of these diminutive tomes flourished, and the challenge to create even more astonishing examples prevailed. In recent years, miniature book production has equaled, or surpassed, other contemporary literary creations in the artistry of typography, printing and binding. Y et, unaware of the dynamic impact her generous gift would have, in 1996, Charlotte M. Smith from Newton, Iowa, a publisher, author, book collector and founder of the Tamazunchale Press, presented her personal collection of miniature books to the University of Iowa Libraries. Charlotte, an avid "booklover", first began to collect miniature books in 1970 when her ever-growing collection of regular sized rare and antiquarian books overloaded the available shelving.
