SMITH, JOHN WILLIAM (1792-1845). John William Smith, christened William John Smith and also known as El Colorado, the last messenger from the Alamo and the first mayor of San Antonio, was born in Virginia on March 4, 1792, the son of John and Isabel Smith. As a youth he moved to Ralls County, Missouri, where he served as tax collector and sheriff and married Harriet Stone in 1821. They had three children. In 1826 Smith followed the empresario qv Green DeWitt qv qv qv and joined Gen. Edward Burleson qv and the Texas army in besieging San Antonio. Smith used his familiarity with the town and his surveying skills to draw the detailed plat that made possible the successful house-to-house attack; he also acted as a guide for one of the assaulting parties. In early 1836 he joined William B. Travis qv in defense of the Alamo; he was sent by Travis as the final messenger to the Convention of 1836. qv Subsequently Smith continued as an army scout and participated in the battle of San Jacinto. qv After Texas independence was gained, he and his family returned to San Antonio, where Smith became an influential citizen and held a number of offices. He was mayor of San Antonio for three one-year terms during the 1830s and 1840s. He was also alderman, Bexar County tax assessor, clerk of the Bexar County Court, clerk of the Board of Land Commissioners of Bexar County, clerk of the Bexar County Probate Court, treasurer of Bexar County, postmaster of San Antonio, Indian commissioner of the Republic of Texas

Smith, John Smith, John, c. 1580 , English colonist in America, b. Willoughby, Lincolnshire, England. A merchant's apprentice until his father's death in 1596, he thereafter lived an adventurous life, traveling, fighting in wars against the Turks in Transylvania and Hungary, and surviving a period of slavery in Turkey. His own account of these adventures has been doubted by some investigators but has been substantiated in a number of particulars. Returning to England, he invested in the new London Company and in 1606 sailed from London for America with Capt. Christopher Newport . On arrival in Virginia, Smith was named a member of the governing council of the Jamestown settlement, although not permitted to serve immediately, and began his explorations of the surrounding territory. He established trade relations with the Native Americans, drew up a map of Virginia, and finally fell into the hands of the Native American chief Powhatan . Although there is no definite proof of the famous incident of Smith's being saved from death by Powhatan's daughter, Pocahontas A True Relation of . . . Virginia

SMITH, JOHN
SMITH, JOHN (1579-1631), usually distinguished as Captain John Smith, sometime president of the English colony in Virginia, was the elder son of George Smith, a well-to-do tenant-farmer on the estate of Lord Willoughby d'Eresby at Willoughby, near Alford in Lincolnshire. The life of this Virginian hero falls conveniently into five periods. The first of these, up to 1596, that of his early youth, is thus described by himself in his Travels: "He was born (1579) in Willoughby in Lincolnshire, and was a scholar in the two free schools of Alford and Louth. 1 The particulars of the authorship are given in the 18th edition (1820), and in the memoir of his brother by Horace prefixed to a collection of fugitive pieces (1840). James contributed the first stanza to the imitation of Byron, but otherwise they worked independently. • His parents, dying (April 1596) when he was thirteen (or rather sixteen) years of age, left him a competent means, which he, not being capable to manage, little regarded. His mind being even then set upon brave adventures, he sold his satchel, books and all he had, intending secretly to get to sea, but that his father’s death stayed him. But now the guardians of his estate more regarding it than him, he had liberty enough, though no means, to get beyond the sea. About the age of fifteen years, he was bound an apprentice to Ma3ter Thomas Sendall of ing’s] Lynn, the greatest merchant of all those parts; but, because he would not presently send him to sea, he never saw his master in eight years after.’’

All this while Smith was under restraint, for thirteen weeks in all. His enemies would have sent him home, out of a sham commiseration for him; but he challenged their charges, and so established his innocency that Wingfield was adjudged to give him £200 as damages. After this, on 20th June 1607, Smith w-as admitted to the council. surrender. He then set his wits to confound them with his superior knowledge, and succeeded. Opecanchanough led him about the country for a wonder, and finally, about 5th January 1608, brought him to Powhatan at Werowocomoco. “Having feasted him after their best barbarous manner they could, a long consultation was held; but the conclusion was two great stones were brought before Powhatan; then as many as could laid hands on Smith, dragged him to them, and thereon laid his head. And, being ready with their clubs to beat out his brains, Pocahontas, the king’s dearest daughter, when no entreaty could prevail, got his head in her arms and laid her own upon his to save him from death. Whereat the emperor was contented Smith should live, to make him hatchets, and her bells, beads and copper; for they thought him as well of all occupations crafts] as themselves.” Space fails to describe how splendidly Smith worked after his deliverance for the good of the colony, how he explored Chesapeake Bay and its influents, how (when ‘all others had failed) the presidency was forced on him on 10th September 1608; how he tried to get corn from Powhatan at Werowocomoco on I 2th January 1609, but he fled to Orapakes, 40 m. farther off; how with only eighteen men he cowed Opecanchanough in his own house at Pamunkey, in spite of the hundreds of Indians that were there, and made him sell corn; how well he administered the colony, making the lazy work or starve.

John Muir Print by Art Smith
In 1990, Wawona Press commissioned the exceptionally intuitive Art Smith to execute an original portrait of John Muir to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Yosemite National Park. John Muir, more than any other individual and with his 1890 Century Magazine articles, was successful in preserving Yosemite as the "crown jewel" of our present national park system. Thus while celebrating a great park's centennial year, October 1990 to October 1991, we also honor Muir who with his "eye within the eye" was the first to recognize and so state that everything on this planet is interconnected. This concept, perhaps not well understood by Muir's generation, has become increasingly clear to our own. The "Yosemite Edition" of this John Muir Print is limited to 1,200 impressions. The four color process has been utilized to capture the subtle brush strokes of the original transparent watercolor. Lithographed on acid-free archival quality paper the print measure 19" high by 12" wide and is offered in three formats:
    • Signed and Numbered Artist's Proof
      15 impressions at $100.00 each.

    Biography:
SMITH, JOHN Born in Virginia, a relative of Henry Smith, Governor of the Provisional Government of Texas, in 1835. He was married to Sarah Gillette who was born in Missouri. (All of the above from page 403, John Henry Brown's Indian Wars and Pioneers of Texas ). He came to Texas previous to May 2, 1835, as is shown in Headright Certificate No. 678 issued to him July 12, 1838 for a league and labor of land by the Brazoria County Board of Land Commissioners. It is quite evident that he did not reach Texas long before May 2, 1835 for had he done so he would most likely have secured a league of land from Stephen F. Austin or one of the other empresarios. Mr. Smith was a member of Captain Robert J. Calder's Brazoria Company at San Jacinto and on June 30, 1838 he was issued donation Certificate No. 399 for 640 acres for having participated in the battle. He was issued Bounty Certificate No. 1435 for 640 acres of land for having served in the army from February 25 to August 6, 1836. This he assigned July 31, 1838 to David White. The Deed Records of San Patricio County show that Mr. Smith was living in Montgomery County, June 17, 1841 when he sold Headright Certificate No. 678 and Donation Certificate No. 399 to Joseph F. Smith.
