Classroom Issues and Strategies
As a Chicano working-class poet, Soto sometimes uses figurative language that might be unfamiliar to and difficult for some readers. Occasionally, he uses a Spanish word or phrase. As a poet with a strong sense of kinship with people who are poor, neglected, and oppressed, Soto tries to create poetry out of ordinary working-class experience and images. All this is very different from typically bourgeois American poetry. It is useful to connect Soto's work to contemporary events in Mexican-American experience. Reading a bit about Cesar Chavez and the California farm worker struggle places some of Soto's sympathies in context. General reading in Chicano (or Mexican-American) history would also be useful. It is also useful to consider Soto among other contemporary poets whose sensibilities were shaped by the post-1960s struggles to improve the circumstances of minority groups and the poor. Urge students to try to see the world from the point of view of one of Soto's working-class Chicanos, perhaps a farm worker. From this perspective, one sees things very differently than from the point of view generally presented in American writing. For the tired, underpaid farm worker, nature is neither kind nor beautiful, as, for example, Thoreau would have us believe. Soto writes about the choking dust in the fields, the danger to the workers' very existence that the sun represents. Imagine a life without many creature comforts, imagine feelings of hunger, imagine the pain of knowing that for the affluent and comfortable, your life counts for very little.

Suggestions for Using These Books in the Library This page lists books of Hispanic or Hispanic American themes, authors, or illustrators. Unless otherwise indicated, all the annotations on this page were contributed by Daphne Jorgensen. Soto, Gary. Big Bushy Mustache. Illustrated by Joe Cepeda. New York; Alfred A. Knopf, 1998 Readers will identify with Ricky, a resourceful boy who comes up with the perfect costume for his class Cinco de Mayo celebration: he puts on a big, bushy mustache like his father’s. Tired of being told how much he looks like his mama, Ricky revels in the way the mustache makes him feel: more like his papi. He proudly walks home from school, with the mustache still in place, feeling very much the grownup. By the time he gets home, he discovers that he has lost the mustache on the way. Mama and Papi save the day in this very satisfying and heart-warming story. Mariscal Reed , Lynn Rowe. Pedro, His Perro, and the Alphabet Sombrero. New York: Hyperion Books for Children, 1995 In this vividly illustrated book, Lynn Rowe Reed intertwines an "alphabet" book into the tale of Pedro and his dog. Pedro gets a fancy perro and a plain sombrero for his birthday. He sets out to spruce up his hat with items listed in alphabetical order and in Spanish. The full page oil pastel illustrations are visually appealing and very interesting. The whole story has a strong Hispanic flair. This is a great book for bilingual children or to teach American children some Spanish words. The author facilitates this by providing a glossary with notes on the Spanish alphabet.

My Point of View of Gary Soto
I am wiring about the poet Gary Soto. I chose him because of his style. He writes about girls, not just that, though. His writing flows well too. When he was really little more than a boy, he first scribbled out a few sad lines of poetry. He shared it with his brother Rick, an artist, and a few other roommates. Gary and his brother arrived at college in a squeaky VW bug without having read more than the back of milk cartons and cereal boxes. Within a two week period, he wrote the sequence "The Elements of San Joaquin" and also poems about his father. Suffering through college puberty, Gary and his brother accepted all knds of odd jobs like walking before dawn to take the labor bus from Chinatown in order to chop beets or cotton. In conclusion, Gary Soto has written many poems in a short amount of time. When Gary and his brother went to college they were'nt really interested about it. One question I would like to ask Soto is: What got you started in poetry writing?
My Favorite Poems of Gary Soto
Who is the poet Gary Soto? Gary Soto is a Chicano poet that has written many poems. Mr. Soto has been active in publishing many books of poetry in his career. In his poems he writes about different emotions, feelings of love. The reason I like Gary Soto is because of that way he expresses different emotions and the way he puts it in a poem.
