For Mark Strand and His Moon
Reading Mark Strand’s beautiful, sharp,
Ragged words, late at night -
I wish I had such vision
He suddenly reminds me to look out
My own window She shines full behind the dark
Hanging shapes of eucalyptus
And turns the sea silver
Like smooth ice
That draws you in
To this forgotten night. The ocean is a glamorous seductress
With a floating string Of diamond oil wells At the edge of a black sky. The time on the clock is all ones And I am one with the window Where I could always look - But don’t Not like I constantly looked Out the window of the orphanage In those solitary days That I thought had ended But have not. The Seven Last Words
The story of the end, of the last word
of the end, when told, is a story that never ends.
until it seems that no last word is possible,
that none would be bearable. Thus, when the hero
of the story says to himself, as to someone far away,
we may feel that he is pleading for us, that we are
the secret life of the story and, as long as his plea
is not answered, we shall be spared. So the story
continues. So we continue. And the end, once more,
becomes the next, and the next after that.
There is an island in the dark, a dreamt-of place where the muttering wind shifts over the white lawns and riffles the leaves of trees, the high trees that are streaked with gold and line the walkways there; and those already arrived are happy to be the silken remains of something they were but cannot recall; they move to the sound of stars, which is also imagined, but who cares about that; the polished columns they see may be no more than shafts of sunlight, but for those

Mark Strand’s Eating Poetry
1 of the best poets I have ever personally known, Greg Clark, once summed up Mark Strand’s corpus in 1 word: dull
Did any of this acclaim ever do anything to increase his poetic skillery? What do you think? In fact, this essay’s titular poem is from his 2 nd book of verse, Reasons For Moving , published in 1968. Supporters of MS hail it as deeply surreal . We’ll get to that in a moment. Nevertheless, MS has had a stellar ‘career’- along with being a PL, he also has traveled extensively, translated 3 rd
But before we tackle this PL’s well-known poem let us briefly look at another of his poems hailed as being vintage Surrealism: A Piece Of The Storm
For Sharon Horvath
From the shadow of domes in the city of domes,
A snowflake, a blizzard of one, weightless, entered your room
And made its way to the arm of the chair where you, looking up
From your book, saw it the moment it landed. That's all there was to it. No more than a solemn waking To brevity, to the lifting and falling away of attention, swiftly

Book Center Mark Strand Mark Strand is the author of ten books of poems, including Blizzard of One , which was awarded the 1999 Pulitzer Prize. Strand has also published a book of short stories, several translations from European and Latin American poets, essays, three children's books, and several monographs on contemporary artists.
Octavio Paz has written. "Mark Strand has chosen the negative path, with loss as the first step towards fullness: it is also the opening to a transparent verbal perfection." The Library Journal said of his work, "No poet his age has a more human voice or a more piercing melancholy... Death, exile, childhood, the vanished lover: loss is the occasion for the lyrics... Strand's mature work, more than ever concerned with mortality, makes one feel alive."

Interview KATHARINE COLES IN THE PRESENCE OF AMERICA: A CONVERSATION WITH MARK STRAND An Interview with Mark Strand by Katharine Coles Mark Strand recently finished a year as Poetry Consultant to the Library of Congress and United States Poet Laureate. He was also recipient of the Utah Governer's Award in 1992 for outstanding achievement in the "Artist" category. He was born in 1934 on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and began his career as a painter, earning a bachelor's degree in fine art from Yale University. Nevertheless, he went on to earn an MA in English from the University of Iowa, and his first book of poems, Sleeping With One Eye Open, was published in 1964. During the following dozen years, he published four more books of poems—Reasons for Moving (1968), Darker (1970), The Sergeantville Notebook (1973), and The Story of Our Lives (1973) as well as three books of translation—18 Poems from The Quechua (1971), The Owl's Insomnia (Rafael Alberti, 1973), and Souvenir of the Ancient World (Carlos Drummond de Andrade, 1976). During that time, he also edited three anthologies, The Contemporary American Poets (1969), New Poetry of Mexico (1973, with Octavio Paz), and Another Republic (1976, with Charles Simic). The Late Hour, a book of poems, and The Monument, a collection of prose poems, were published in 1978. The 1980s saw the publication of two books on art, Art of the Real (1983) and William Bailey (1987), a first book of short stories, Mr. and Mrs. Baby (1985), and three books for children, The Planet of Lost Things (1982), The Night Book (1985), and Rembrandt Takes a Walk (1986), as well as a fourth book of translations, Travelling in the Family (Carlos Drummond de Andrade, with Thomas Colchie, 1986).

Poetry MARK STRAND From Dark Harbor
I
When after a long silence one picks up the pen
And leans over the paper and says to himself:
Today I shall consider Marsyas
Whose body was flayed to an excess
Of nakedness, who made no crime that would square
With what he was made to suffer.
Today I shall consider the shredded remains of Marsyas
What do they mean as they gather the sunlight That falls in small pieces through the trees, As in Titian's late painting. Poor Marsyas, A body, a body of work as it turns and falls Into suffering, becoming the flesh of light, Which is fed to onlookers centuries later. Can this be the cost of encompassing pain? After a long silence, would I, whose body Is whole, sheltered, kept in the dark by a mind That prefers it that way, know what I'd done And what its worth was? Or is a body scraped From the bone of experience, the chart of suffering To be read in such ways that all flesh might be redeemed, At least for the moment, the moment it passes into song.

One of the greatest joys of reading a collection of 'selected poems' by a poet, is the ability to see the progression of a poet's style. Selected Poems by Mark Strand is a very well laid-out collection in that poems are grouped according to chronological order. The book was originally published in 1979, but was reissued in 1990 to coincide with the publishing of his book The Continuous Life and his selection as Poet Laureate of the United States for that year.
Poems in the earliest group are culled from Strand's 1964 collection,
Sleeping With One Eye Open
In a field I am the absense of field. This is always the case. Wherever I am I am what is missing.

By the time readers reach the final section of poems, it should be easy for them to see why Strand was chosen to be Poet Laureate. His poems achieve a wonderful depth of emotion without losing their slightly surreal quality. His poems are accessible to the average reader. He has no obscured agenda hidden under abstractions and enigmas.

Release: Immediate Mark Strand will give lecture April 4 and poetry reading April 5 at UI IOWA CITY, Iowa University of Iowa alumnus Mark Strand, former poet laureate of the United States, will give a reading and deliver a lecture on successive days at the UI. Strand's lecture, "Mixed Doubles: Comparing Morandi and Bailey, Albers and Rothko, Avedon and Bacon," will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 4 in the Lasansky Room of the UI Museum of Art. The following day, Saturday, April 5, Strand will read from his poetry at 8 p.m. in Room 101 of the UI Becker Communications Building. Both free events are sponsored by the UI Writers' Workshop. Strand, who was the U.S. poet laureate 1990-91, is the author of nine collections of poems, the novel "Mr. and Mrs. Baby," and acclaimed books on realism in art, about Edward Hopper and William Bailey. He is also one of America's most highly regarded translators, especially of Raphael Alberti and Carlos Drummond de Andrade. His work is known for precise language, the surreal and the recurring theme of absence and negation. Octavio Paz says of his work: "Mark Strand has chosen the negative path, with loss as the first step towards fullness; it is also the opening to a transparent verbal perfection. Made from fragile and changing words, the poem converts itself into the 'mirror in which pain is asleep.'"

To hear this poem read by the poet, click here A blindness unknown to itself might as well be vision,
So I opened the door that had been my shield and walked out
Into the coils of wind and blurred tattoos of light That marred the ground. The day lay cold upon my skin. "Out of my way," I said to whatever was waiting, "Out of my way." In a trice the purple thunder drew back, the tulip dropped Its petals, the path was clear. I headed west, over the Great Divide, and down through canyons into an endless valley. Oh my, I had stepped into a mode I wasn't prepared for. I was happy. The air was pure, the houses were vacant, And none of the fields was ploughed. That's what I loved.
