he son of a Cornish minister, Arthur Symons was born into The Celtic Twilight and born into religion. The first he enthusiastically embraced, and second he spent the earlier part of his career trying to ignore, only to have it return with a vengeance during his later years. As a pupil of Walter Pater and a more honestly productive one than The Grand Oscar Symons came by his aestheticism honorably, and he mined it assiduously crafting essays on everything from the Can-Can to a bullfight in Valencia. As a founding member of The Rhymers' Club, he became their "Keeper of the Flame," refusing to jettison his past as fellow-Rhymer Yeats had done, endlessly given to ruminating over their tragic fates. Symons had his own tragic fate in that he died young as far as his creativity was concerned. Although he lived into the year 1945, he was by then a living phantom from a bygone age. But between his precocious debut with the full-length critical work An Introduction to the Study of Browning in 1886 and his nervous breakdown in Venice in 1908, which effectively doused his creative fires, he produced an impressive catalogue of work. His finest books of verse (

Arthur Symons A Tune Pastel: Masks And Faces White Heliotrope
A Tune A foolish rhythm turns in my idle head
As a wind-mill turns in the wind on an empty sky.
Why it is when love, which men call deathless, is dead,
That memory, men call fugitive, will not die?
Is love not dead? yet I hear that tune if I lie
Dreaming awake in the night on my lonely bed,
And as old thought turns with the old tune in my head
As a wind-mill turns in the wind on an empty sky.

Pastel: Masks And Faces The light of our cigarettes
Went and came in the gloom: It was dark in the little room. Dark, and then, in the dark, Sudden, a flash, a glow, And a hand and a ring I know. And then, through the dark, a flush Ruddy and vague, the grace (A rose!) of her lyric face.
White Heliotrope The feverish room and that white bed, The tumbled skirts upon a chair, The novel flung half-open where Hat, hair-pins, puffs, and paints, are spread; The mirror that has sucked your face Into its secret deep of deeps, And there mysteriously keeps Forgotten memories of grace;

Arthur Symons
Arthur Symons was a poet, translator, critic and editor who captured Colbeck's attention like no other writer. Educated in Devonshire, Symons befriended many artists and writers of the nineties in England and France. He published several volumes of verse and criticism, notably "Symbolist Movement in Literature" (1899), contributed regularly to Athenaeum Saturday , and Fortnightly reviews, wrote plays, edited, and translated from six languages
Colbeck proclaimed: "Arthur Symon's prose writings fascinated me, an uncritical youth, more than sixty years ago. When I first read that remarkable essay 'Fact in Literature,' I realized I was in communion with a mind I would venerate and love always. Perhaps we could recapture the first paragraph of that work:
The invention of printing helped to destroy literature. Scribes, and memories not yet spoilt by over-cramming, preserved all the literature that was worth preserving. Books that had to be remembered by heart, or copied with slow, elaborate penmanship, were not thrown away on people who did not want them. They remained in the hands of people of taste. The first book pointed the way to the first newspaper, and a newspaper is a thing meant to be not only forgotten but destroyed. With the deliberate destruction of print, the respect for printed literature vanished, and a single term came to be used for the poem and the "news item." What had once been an art for the few became a trade for the many.

Introduction
Arthur Symons, a British poet, literary critic, and translator, was born in Wales and educated privately. He was an admirer of the French poets known as the Symbolists*, and he expounded their ideas in critical works such as The Symbolist Movement in Literature (1899) and in biographies of symbolist poets, including Charles Baudelaire (1920). In his own poetry, which included the volumes Days and Nights (1899) and Silhouettes (1892), he emulated the symbolist style. Among his other works are The Romantic Movement in English Poetry (1909) and the autobiographical Confessions This collection includes manuscripts, typescripts, notebooks, tear sheets, clippings, photographs, watercolors, paintings, and much miscellaneous material. A few letters to Symons are also included in this collection; however, the bulk of his correspondence appears to have been dispersed before his death.

    The Symbolist movement in literature
SYMONS, Arthur William (1865-1945) In The Decadent Movement in Literature "Impressionism and symbolism are really working on the same hypothesis, applied in different directions.... The Impressionist...would flash upon you in a new, sudden way so exact an image of what you have just seen.... The Symbolist in this new, sudden way, would flash upon you the 'soul' of that which can be apprehended only by the soulthe finer sense of things unseen, the deeper meaning of things evident." Lionel Johnson to Katherine Tynan: "Symons is a slave to impressionism, whether the impression be precious or not. A London fog, the blurred, tawny lamplights, the red omnibus, the dreary rain, the depressing mud, the glaring gin-shop, the slatternly shivering women: three dexterous stanzas telling you that and nothing more."
