The Gold Book
It told the story of a runaway rose that fled trellises, hedges, and the safety of the master's shack for a life of abandon in a town down the mountain, till the repressed one-armed giantess packed her shears and went to hunt. You recall the rest only in shredsthe long travails of the giantess, dark windy nights, a loud tavern where soldiers bounced the blithe rose on their knees and called it Betty From Crash's Law

About Spar 2001 Iowa Poetry Prize
Karen Volkman's award-winning collection Spar
While very much a living voice, the poems' speaker is not a consistent self but a mutable figure buffeted by tenderness, terror, irony, or lust into elaborate evasions, exclamations, verbal hijinks, and lyric flights. As its title suggests, Spar embodies both resistance and aspiration, while its epigraphs further emphasize the simultaneous allure and danger of the unknown within the sensual and material worlds and in the mind itself.
Allen Grossman
"Karen Volkman is building up a world slowly, patiently, starting from walls, fences, and hedges. She is a virtuoso, a wise and provocative poet; she makes us long for windows, for the warmth of a room filled with the air of passion." Adam Zagajewski

KAREN VOLKMAN
[I have a friend. My friend is a sky.]
I have a friend. My friend is a sky. There are dark, starved places that do
nothing but blur and spend, and the quick sharp blue-black lightning streaks called
punish. If you wish to do what is known only as "to rest," "to sleep," "to live," you
and my friend will have nothing to speak of.
He says, Girls fall through holes, occasionally on purpose. He says, Many
shapes of web make the rope that will stay you. He says, A bitter metal forms the bit
that slits your tongue.
When they ask, What is your friend, that you ash and azure for him? I sing
boxless wind in a blanched meadow, scree and scrawl. It is not because doors keep the light out, or doom is mortal. It is not because dawn calls weather, wander, weigh. If words are wire and can whip him, this is the scar. A poem by Valerie Madamba Back to the 89th Annual PSA Award Winners

Karen grew up in the very real landscape of South Florida, and something in that strange, extravagant climate has left its mark on her poems. Karen started writing poetry when she was twenty. As a teenager, she was more interested in reading novels and short stories; she avoided poetry because she thought it was hard to understand and "boring." Then one year she took a class that used a terrific bookJohn Frederick Nims's Western Wind which explained very clearly and intelligently what poets were up to when they decided to write poems in a certain way. Suddenly poetry stopped being mysterious to her, and became a pleasure to read and write. "I try to create this same experience for the children I teach," Karen says. "With younger students, I try to make poetry seem natural and fun and related to their feelings and to the things they see and know; with older kids, I often bring in a poem and talk about how the poet put it together, then give them an idea drawn from that poem. With all age groups, I work to give a sense of poetry as something written by real people with pleasure and some skill."
