Susan Vreeland: Living in the Spirit of Art
Susan Vreeland (Photo Courtesy of Susan Vreeland) A funny thing happened on Susan Vreeland 's way through lymphoma. After narrowing Vreeland's focus to the bare essentials of living and dying, the experience opened her horizons to the "beauty and soulfulness" of art. Suddenly a woman with a mission, Vreeland surrounded herself with art books and let the wonder she found there draw her back to balance and harmony. Ultimately, the hundreds of artists, paintings and sculptures she read about set the course for the next stage of her life's journey. Vreeland's creative purpose veered from the classroom and short story writing to novels that related art to everyday people. The combination magnified the subjects' lives and touched readers, turning the first novel she wrote after her hospital stay, Girl in Hyacinth Blue , into a bestseller. Vreeland's latest release, The Passions of Artemisia , takes readers on a tour of the world of 17th century art as seen through the eyes of a young woman, Artemisia Gentileschi, who would become one of its most controversial painters. Art plays a prominent role in Vreeland's upcoming projects too.

Susan Vreeland's novel Girl in Hyacinth Blue received a warm and award-winning welcome in 1999. It made many "best of" lists for that year. Hallmark Hall of Fame bought the television rights and expects to air their version in late 2001 or 2002. Vreeland's serene work of art continues to touch readers with its simplicity, depth and beauty similar to the Vermeer painting, which serves as the focal point of the novel. Vreeland connects readers to the world of art in a most unusual and personal way. Through her novel she humanizes one of the masters, 17th century Dutch artist Johannes Vermeer, and demonstrates the way things one painting touches lives through the centuries. Girl in Hyacinth Blue traces the painting, a figment of the author's imagination, through a series of eight interconnected short stories. Readers time travel through these stories from today back to the moment Vermeer created the painting of a girl lost in contemplation, her hands idle in her lap, her sewing forgotten. While demonstrating "six degrees of separation," Vreeland connects other topics. Her depiction of the women in each story emphasizes their limited freedom and lack of control over their lives and the lives of their children. Vreeland also incorporates the horrors of the Holocaust from several perspectives, most notably the victim and victimizer and swirls it around the main character of her book the painting. She demonstrates how one person's evil changes forever the dynamics of those he loves.

About Susan Interview Reviews Booklist Accolades for Susan By: Nancy Mehl, MyShelf.Com My first exposure to Susan Vreeland came in 1999. The book review site I worked for, The Charlotte Austin Review, was approached by Susan's publicist with a request for a review. Her book, Girl in Hyacinth Blue , sounded interesting, but perhaps a little "highbrow" for my tastes. However, I accepted the review. Along with the review came a note from my editor asking me to do an interview with Susan. I looked her up on the Internet, trying to get a little background information. What I found impressed me, but I wanted to read the book before getting into the interview.
I sat down with Girl in Hyacinth Blue - and didn't get up for a long time. The book wasn't just absorbing - it was an experience. Each chapter traced the path of a painting - the painting of a young girl. Each person was touched by the artist's work in a different way because, I believe, true art carries with it the power to become whatever the viewer needs to see. The story of Aletta Pieters made me cry. I remember her vision of the painting even now: .She looked up to it imploringly. "You think that somewhere girls actually live like that - just sitting so peaceful like?" To young Aletta, bruised, abused, and neglected by life, the painting was of something she couldn't find the strength to hope for.

"At some times in our lives, our passion makes us perpetrators of hurt and loss. At other times we are the ones who are hurt - all in name of art. Sometimes we get what we want. Sometimes we pay for another to get what he or she wants." I looked at Palmira apologetically. "That's the way the world works." Artemisia Gentileschi from THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA is the story of Italian artist Artemisia Gentileschi. (1593-1653). The novel opens with Artemisia as a teenager. She has been raped by her painting teacher, a friend of her father's, but keeps the secret of the outrage because he tells her he loves her and promises to marry her. Artemisia's father discovers the truth and files charges against Agostino Tassi. The young girl finds herself a participant in a papal court. Her cruel treatment at the hands of the court, the realization that her father's actions are not fueled by concern for her, but by his own selfish motives, and the release of her abuser, lead Artemisia to accept an arranged marriage to a stranger. However, she is grateful to leave Rome and go with her new husband to Florence, a city rich in artistic heritage.

Send this interview to a friend The 17th century painter who inspired a story of artistic passion The author of Girl in Hyacinth Blue explores the incandescent talents of a woman artist bound by Baroque sensibilities BY SUSAN VREELAND In Girl in Hyacinth Blue, Magdalena, my fictional daughter of Johannes Vermeer, longed to paint. With the eye of a painter she imagined a composition of the moment of her father's death. "She yearned to [paint] it, but the task was too fearsome. She lacked the skill, and the one to teach her had never offered." But what if there had been a father-painter who had offered? One who saw great talent in his daughter and undertook to teach her how to paint? Two years ago, the art history teacher of the high school where I taught English literature and ceramics said to me mysteriously, having just read Girl, "I know who your next novel will be about." I stopped breathing a moment. How did she know when I didn't? Though a life-long lover of art, I was not an art historian myself. So when she told me that a well-known Italian Baroque painter, Orazio Gentileschi, did teach his daughter, Artemisia, I was fascinated. That Artemisia produced works of startling invention, expressing a feminist sensibility in paintings of strong heroines caught in dramatic moments, thinking and acting against the grain, that she was the first woman to be admitted into the Accademia dell' Arte in Florence, the first woman to make her living solely by her brush all this was more than I'd hoped for. And when I read that she had been raped at 17 by her father's friend and collaborator, whom he had hired to teach her perspective, I knew there was a story here.

Author isn't blue over TV changes: Susan Vreeland hopes book fans also enjoy `Brush With Fate'
By AARON BARNHART
The Kansas City Star

As Susan Vreeland sees it, she is lucky to have her novel turned into a "Hallmark Hall of Fame" movie. So what if huge chunks of her book were thrown out, the order of events reshuffled and one major character given a sex change? Vreeland, who writes about works of art and the human drama behind them, was thrilled anyway. "When I saw the movie, I was bowled over at how powerful the change was," says the author of Girl in Hyacinth Blue , the surprise best seller that was reworked into "Brush With Fate," tonight's "Hallmark Hall of Fame" airing 9 p.m. ET on CBS. Vreeland is not just playing nice. In a phone interview from Philadelphia, where she was on tour promoting her books and sitting through her fifth screening of "Brush With Fate," she makes clear that she entered into this deal with Hallmark with eyes wide open. She knew there would be substantial rewriting. Yet she still hasn't gotten tired of seeing her first novel on the big screen. "I see more things," Vreeland says. "There's a huge scene, it took months to engineer, where they had to build a dike, they had to break the dike and wash people away. It's fabulous."

  • "The Passion of Artemisia" by Susan Vreeland In this novel about a real-life female Renaissance painter, a thin veneer of feminism covers a juicy heart of blushing, throbbing melodrama. By Stephanie Zacharek Have a look at this passage in which Artemisia, frustrated by the lack of sexual attention shown to her by her gruff, philandering husband, confronts him with memories of a rare, recent exploit, in which the two climbed a tall belltower the better to gaze down upon the dome of the Florence Cathedral (after which they rushed home in the rain to make mad, passionate love that would shiver the timbers of the Sistine Chapel): "Nothing? Was it nothing that made you get drenched in a storm? Nothing that made you climb halfway to Heaven on a whim of mine? Nothing when you covered my throat with kisses, pressed your hardness against me next to God's own dome?" Madre di Dio! Never has reading about the experiences of a real-life woman artist made things so hot under the old wimple. (Let's not even talk about the part where Artemisia, lonely and sexually frustrated, slips into bed and teases her nipples with a paintbrush that once belonged to Michelangelo.)

    THE PASSION OF ARTEMISIA
by Susan Vreeland INTRODUCTION What would it take for a woman to be a famous painter in Baroque Italy? Talent. Passion. Determination. Good fortune. Artemisia Gentileschi had all but one. In my previous novel, Girl in Hyacinth Blue , Magdalena, the fictional daughter of Johannes Vermeer, longed to paint. With the eye of an artist she imagined a painting of the moment of her father's death, "but the task was too fearsome. She lacked the skill, and the one to teach her had never offered." But what if someone had offered? When I learned that a well known Italian Baroque painter, Orazio Gentileschi, did teach his daughter, Artemisia, I was fascinated. That she produced works of startling invention which took the Baroque spirit of exuberance to its height, that she expressed a feminist sensibility in painting strong heroines caught in moments of danger or tension, thinking and acting against the grain, that she was the first woman to be admitted into the Accademia dell' Arte in Florence, the first woman to make her living solely by her brush all this was more than I'd hoped for. And when I read that she had been raped at seventeen by her father's friend and collaborator, her second teacher, I knew there was a story here.
