Yevgeny Yevtushenko
Best known poet of the post-Stalin generation of Russian poets, Yevtushenko's early poems show the influence of Mayakovsky and loyalty to communism, but with such works as The Third Snow (1955) Yevtushenko become a spokesman for the young post-Stalin generation and travelled abroad widely throughout the Khrushchev and the Brezhnev periods. Yevtushenko was born in Zima in Irkutsk (July 18, 1933) as a fourth-generation descendant of Ukrainians exiled to Siberia. He moved to Moscow in 1944, where he studied at the Gorky Institute of Literature from 1951 to 1954. In 1948 he accompanied his father on geological expeditions to Kazakhstan and to Altai in 1950. His first important narrative poem Zima Junction was published in 1956 but gained international fame in 1961 with Babi Yar , in which he denounced Nazi and Russian anti-Semitism. The poem was not published in Russia until 1984, althoug it was frequently recited in both Russia and abroad. The Heirs of Stalin (1961), published presumably with Party approval in

Yevgeny Yevtushenko was born in Zima, Irkutsk, on 18th July, 1933. He was the descendant of a family exiled to Siberia. Influenced by the work of Vladimir Mayakovsky and Sergei Yesenin , he began writing poetry and achieved fame with his long narrative poem, Stantsiya Zima His poem, Baby Yar (1961) dealt with the Nazi massacre of 34,000 Ukrainian Jews . Some critics saw this poem as an attack on Soviet anti-Semitism. In 1962 the official party newspaper published his poem Heirs of Stalin . The poem describes the burial of Stalin but at the end suggests that the problems are not yet over: "Grimly clenching his embalmed fists, just pretending to be dead, he watched from inside. He was scheming. Had merely dozed off. And I, appealing to our government, petition them to double, and treble, the sentries guarding the slab, and stop Stalin from ever rising again."

Colours
When your face
appeared over my crumpled life
at first I understood
only the poverty of what I have.
Then its particular light
on woods, on rivers, on the sea,
became my beginning in the coloured world
in which I had not yet had my beginning.
I am so frightened, I am so frightened, of the unexpected sunrise finishing, of revelations and tears and the excitement finishing. I don't fight it, my love is this fear, I nourish it who can nourish nothing, love's slipshod watchman. Fear hems me in. I am conscious that these minutes are short and that the colours in my eyes will vanish when your face sets. Back to Poems in alphabetical order Back to Poems sorted by author

Breaking Up
I fell out of love: that's our story's dull ending,
as flat as life is, as dull as the grave.
and smash the guitar. We have nothing to save.
The puppy is puzzled. Our furry small monster
he whines at your door and I let him enter,
when he scratches at my door, you always go.
Dog, sentimental dog, you'll surely go crazy,
too young to conceive of an ancient idea:
it's ended, done with, over, kaput. Finis. Get sentimental and we end up by playing the old melodrama, "Salvation of Love". "Forgiveness," we whisper, and hope for an echo; but nothing returns from the silence above. Better save love at the very beginning, avoiding all passionate "nevers", "forevers"; we ought to have heard what the train wheels were shouting, "Do not make promises!" Promises are levers. We should have made note of the broken branches, we should have looked up at the smokey sky, the greater the hope is, the greater the lie. True kindness in love means staying quite sober, weighing each link of the chain you must bear. not "unto death," but at least to next year.

Yevgeny Yevtushenko Yevgeny Yevtushenko (B. 1933), a Russian poet Wrote on the stone wall of the Holocaust Museum, Washington D.C. For I have read and remember, that Tuesday, March Third, One year away from then to the Millennium, those who were gassed, Tortured and buried alive - objects of scientific experiment and more, With their eyes labeled Jew, gypsies, homosexual or Africans of the darker race Their incessant scream huddled into the gas chamber of Auschwitz. I didn't Know what to do with all those names etched into those glass panels and the shattered families whose photographs were framed happily to the ceiling wall. I came to Babi Yar because I was there, once in 1991, to understand Yevgeny's poem. The wild grasses over Babi Yar The trees look ominous, Like judges. Here all things scream Silently, And, baring my Head, Slowly I feel myself Turning gray. And I myself Am one Massive, soundless scream Above the thousand Thousand buried Here.

His early poems show influence of Mayakovsky and loyalty to communism, but with such work as The Third Snow (1955). Yevtushenko became a spokesman for the young generation. Throughout the Khrushchev and the Brezhnev periods he travelled widely abroad, giving readings as a symbol of a new freedom in the Soviet Union. The 6-foot-3-inch Siberian poet especially received much attention in the United States. "Why is that in folk songs of all nations and all ages people express the desire to become birds? Because birds know no borders. People are mortally envious of animals for their freedom, and probably that is why we try to deprive them of it by forcing borders on them - be they the barriers of zoo, the bars of a circus cage, or the transparent but still prisonlike walls of an aquarium. People insult their one God-given planet with impassable fences (which Robert Frost described with such a bitter irony) - with barbed wire, with iron or newspaper curtain. The division, the separation of the earth's surface, turns into mutual verbal and physical cannibalism. Our lack of knowledge of each other is like that of a blind sculptor, dangerous in his aggressive naiveté, who creates figures of so-called enemies."
