The indefinite integral of a function is another function which can be used to calculate this area. Mathematically, indefinite integrals are curious: for many functions cannot be integrated exactly, only approximated by discrete methods. Integrals can only be used for functions whose domain is rational numbers; ironically, if one wishes to integrate a discrete function whose domain is integers, the integral will only be an approximation. Keeping this odd duality in mind the relation of the indefinite rational to definite integer we turn to the interplay of Mathematics and Society in Zamyatin's We It is the presumption of the One State that the universe is a discrete place: to reflect this, society is strictly regimented. The relations between people is sharp, well defined, and closely monitored. The first, most obvious indication of this is people (and many places) are not named, but numbered. The exact system for assigning these numbers is left up to the imagination, but clearly reflects a society where the individual is both sharply defined and subsumed to the great machine. The machine, the One State, is the sum of these numbers. Central to the functioning the One State is the great Table of Hours. This table is the schedule which lays out the entire workings of the State machine. ``Every morning, with six-wheeled precision we millions of us get up as one. Latest A Soviet Heretic Yevgeny Zamyatin [translated from the Russian by Mirra Ginsberg] Quartet Books 1991 On Literature and Art Leon Trotsky [translated from the Russian] Pathfinder Press 1972 A book review by Danny Yee Though he seems to have become almost trendy in recent years, Zamyatin is not as well known as later Soviet dissidents such as Solzhenitsyn, perhaps because he never renounced his Marxism and because his opposition to Stalinism was artistic rather than political (and perhaps because his greatest work was a science fiction novel). The critical work collected in A Soviet Heretic , however, shows him to be worthy of respect, both for his writing and for his personal fight for a free and open Soviet art. Zamyatin's revolutionary credentials were impeccable (he had joined the Bolsheviks before 1905) and it would have been easy for him to have toed the party line and accepted the rewards; instead he was lucky to be allowed to go into exile. A Soviet Heretic Four pieces on writing - on theme and plot, on language, on the psychology of creativity, and on the "backstage" of Zamyatin's own unconscious - are among the most accessible in the collection. Though they contain references to contemporary authors and some of the language examples have been omitted as untranslatable, they retain their relevance. Of historical importance are a selection of portraits, obituaries, and critical studies of various writers (and one artist): Alexander Blok, Fyodor Sologub, Chekhov, Kustodiev, Andrey Bely, Maxim Gorky, H.G. Wells, O. Henry, and Anatole France. These also demonstrate Zamyatin's powers of description and characterisation: people I had never heard of before - Sologub, for example - come to life. In fact, it is acknowledged as a source which Orwell used when writing his more famous dystopian novel. ( We was written in Russian in 1921, published in English in 1924, published in Russian in 1952 in New York, and only finally published in Russia in 1988.) The main character of the book, a mathematician named D-503, must come to grips with his love for the intriguing I-330 (lovely name, don't you think?) who gets him thinking more about "I" (the selfish self) than "We" (the OneState). Unfortunately, I can't say I find it too interesting to read. (I have only read the sections reprinted in Imaginary Numbers .) The math in the book is all "pseudo-math". Here's a sample: "I am completely bewildered. Yesterday, at the very moment when I thought that everything was already disentangled, that all the X's were found, new unknown quantities appeared in my equation." "Of course, it's clear: in order to determine the true value of a function it is necessary to take it to its ultimate limit ... Hence, if we designate love as 'L' and death as 'D,' then L = f(D). In other words, love and death - yes, exactly, exactly."
