YEVGENY ZAMYATIN ON REVOLUTION, ENTROPY, DOGMA AND HERESY
Today is doomed to die, because yesterday has died and because tomorrow shall be born. Such is the cruel and wise law. Cruel, because it dooms to eternal dissatisfaction those who today already see the distant heights of tomorrow; wise, because only eternal dissatisfaction is the guarantee of unending movement forward, of unending creativity. He who has found his ideal today, has already been turned into a pillar of salt as was Lot's wife, has already grown into the earth and moves no further. The world lives only by heretics: Christ the heretic, Copernicus the heretic, Tolstoj the heretic. Our creed is heresy: tomorrow is infallibly heresy for the today which has been turned into a pillar of salt, for the yesterday which has crumbled into dust. Today negates yesterday, but tomorrow is the negation of negation: always the same dialectical path, which carries the world into infinity along a grandiose parabola. Thesis yesterday, antithesis today, and synthesis tomorrow. Revolution is everywhere, in everything; it is infinite, there is no final revolution, no final number. The social revolution is only one of innumerable numbers; the law of revolution is not social, but immeasurably greater a cosmic, universal law like the law of the conservation of energy, of the dissipation of energy (entropy). Someday the exact formula for the law of revolution will be established, and in this formula nations, classes, stars, and books will be numerical quantities.

Background information, Questions for Reading , and further resources
The fiction writer, dramatist, critic, editor and translator Evgenii (pronounced "Yevgeny") Zamyatin was born in 1884 in the Russian provincial town of Lebedyan and grew up in provincial central Russia. His father was an Orthodox priest, but he joined the Bolshevik Party while he was a student at the St Petersburg Polytechnioc Institute. He was arrested, imprisoned, and then exiled in 1905. In 1908 he finally graduated as a naval engineer and joined the faculty of the Institute. At the same time he began publishing both technical articles and fiction. His early works included "A Provincial Tale" [Uezdnoe], 1913 (based on a period of exile in 1911; how would it compare to the image of exile in Khvoshchinskaia's Boarding School Girl Out in the Sticks [Na kulichkakh], 1914, many short stories, and the longer stories "The Islanders" [Ostrovityane], 1918, based on a residence in England during the First World War in his professional hat of naval engineer, and "The Fisher of Men" [Lovets chelovekov], 1922.

Book Review Comments We was originally writen as a warning of the dangers that may be to come if we to fully embrace technology, just as the books writen many years after 1984 and Brave New World also had the same message. Instead now We is a strong reminder of what has already occured in our past. When reading We think of Stalin, Hitler, and the Berlin Wall which was yet to be built when We was written but whcih strongly resembles the Green Wall depicted in We.
Zamyatin, the author of We, was exiled from Russia, and his book was never published there, or in the Russian language until 1988. This is interesting to note because so much of what Zamyatin prophecizes comes to pass and the book was totally suppressed while these actual events were happening.

EN 4241 SF II: Utopias and Dystopias Rajeev Patke Susan Ang Course Description and Objectives This module examines the utopian impulse and its inversion through fictional constructs which extrapolate from familiar mind-sets, existing systems of social, political and ethical organisation, current technologies and eco-systems to possible worlds and alternative modes of existence that refract an acute crisis of the contemporary. The module provides an opportunity to study the imaginative impulse which revises our sense of the relation between what has been to what could have been, and of what is, to what might come to be.
This module will address the following questions: What is the appeal and function of imaginative utopias and dystopias? How do such forms of imaginative writing address the constantly changing relation of science and technology to human life as we know it, to the human individual, to human society, and to the many institutions and notions, from gender and sexuality to race, family, nation, religion and species through which the relation of the individual to the group is mediated in time and place?

Zamjatin's and Plato's Caves: Imagery and Reflection
Angele Zebley, Brown University Zamjatin's short story "The Cave" ("Peshchera") has been interpreted in a number of ways. Those scholars who have investigated "The Cave" have looked at it in terms of a clash of spiritual versus material in the immediate aftermath of the Bolshevik Revolution, a clash of old and new cultures, or Zamjatin's reversal on the Revolution and a vehicle for his "neo-realist" literary style. While all of these approaches yield valuable and fruitful interpretations, they neglect to give a global view of the work and its intricate construction. The present paper intends to complement these earlier investigations in several ways: by examining the multiple systems of imagery employed in "The Cave" and how they are intertwined to create an aesthetic and philosophical whole; by re examining the notion that, in writing "The Cave", Zamjatin retreats from his "Scythian" outlook; and by introducing a hypothesis for construing Zamjatin's cave as Socrates' cave, as depicted in Plato's Republic In Book VII of Plato's Republic Zamjatin uses all of these Platonic elements in the development of "The Cave". Martin Martinych is described as "fettered", the fire in the cave acts as the Platonic fire does, as a false sun, a false god. Masha is described as completely flat, two-dimensional, like the shadows in Plato, and her voice is several times said to be only an "echo" of her former one. Blindness plays an important function in this correlation as well. Martin Martinych clearly suffers from the second type of blindness described in Plato. When the electric light is turned on in Martin's cave, he must squint and turn away. Martin is twice compared to a bird blinded and trapped in unfamiliar circumstances, and is several times described directly as blind. None of these systematic correlations would be particularly interesting if not for the fact that Plato's "cave story" is itself a comment on who is fit to govern. In this way, Zamjatin strongly indicts the new regime.
