Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton on 21 October 1921. After study at the Royal College of Music, London, he joined the London Philharmonic Orchestra, becoming principal trumpet in 1942. In 1948, he won the Mendelssohn Scholarship and left the orchestra to spend a year in Italy. On his return, he quickly built up a reputation as a fluent and versatile composer and a brilliant orchestrator, receiving numerous prestigious commissions. Since then, he has written music of every type and for every sort of ensemble; for professionals and amateurs; for theatre, concert hall and film (over 80 scores including The Bridge on the River Kwai which won him an Oscar and Inn of the Sixth Happiness which brought an Ivor Novello award). In 1969, he was made a Bard of the Cornish Gorseth, and was awarded the C.B.E. in 1970. He holds Honorary Doctorates of Music from Exeter University, Durham University and Leicester University; he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Music in 1983 and is an honorary R.A.M. In 1986 (his 65th year) he received the Ivor Novello Award for "Outstanding Services to British Music" and received a knighthood in the New Year Honours List, 1993, for his services to music. Arnold's music springs directly from roots in dance and song. Typically, it is lucid in texture and clear in draughtsmanship. His lighter entertainment pieces, easy to listen to and rewarding to perform, are among the rare latter-day equivalents of 18th-century serenades and divertimenti. As an inventor of tunes, his powers seem to be inexhaustable, and he is prodigal with his gifts; the "big tune" in the modest little

b. Sir Malcolm Arnold was born in Northampton on 21st October 1921. At the age of sixteen he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music, London, studying the trumpet with Ernest Hall and composition with Gordon Jacob. From 1941 to 1948 he held the post of principal trumpet with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, with the interruption of two years military service during the war. Although acknowledged as one of the great trumpeters of the age, the need to express himself through composition finally demanded 100% of his time and from 1948 until the early 1960s Arnold's productivity was at its peak. With commissions pouring in at an ever-increasing rate; in the mid-fifties, Arnold was often bracketed with Benjamin Britten and William Walton as one of the most sought-after of the 'serious' composers in the country. His role as a conductor of his work, in the concert hall and in film and recording studios, also increased at this time.
With a remarkable catalogue of major concert works to his credit, including nine symphonies, seven ballets, two operas, one musical, over twenty concertos, two string quartets, and music for brass-band and wind-band, Sir Malcolm Arnold has also written 132 film scores. Among these are some of the finest works ever composed for the medium: Bridge over the River Kwai, Inn of the Sixth Happiness, Hobson's Choice; Whistle down the Wind and David Copperfield.

Sir Malcolm Henry Arnold
(b. 1921)
b. Northampton (England); 21 October 1921 Normal societies lock away their troublemakers, but the British have this peculiar habit of knighting theirs... and so, in 1993, a trumpeter, composer, conductor and firebrand called Malcolm Arnold woke up with the label "Sir" before his name (it's not known at this time whether he had to kneel before his Queen to collect the "gong"). It would appear, however, that Sir Malcolm has not permitted his belated respectability to tarnish a reputation for genial irrascability (from the interview appended to the National SO of Ireland/Andrew Penny recording of his Ninth Symphony: "There's life in the old dog yet").... An impertinent beginning; but in many ways, Malcolm Arnold is an impertinent composer. To this day, the British musical establishment has struggled to get a handle on him... despite a flood of concerts in Britain celebrating Arnold's 75th year, the current (1996) London Proms program features one short work only ( The Sound Barrier rhapsody as part of its "Last Night" carnival). Admittedly, even Arnold's admirers admit that sometimes he could be his own worst enemy... from the unexpected intrusion of the piccolos which shatter the dignity of his First Symphony through the persistently off-key foghorn of the

Arnold, Malcolm (1921 - )
The English composer Malcolm Arnold made his early career as a trumpet-player, principally with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Since 1948 he has concentrated on his work as a composer, writing music that shows his thorough understanding of the orchestra and in a style that is tonal and often attractive to a wider audience than is usual in contemporary music. He has written a large number of film scores, including the music for The Bridge on the River Kwai and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness. Orchestral Music Malcolm Arnold's symphonies have not always received the attention that is their due. Frequently heard, however, are the comedy overture Beckus, the Dandipratt, and the overture Tam o'Shanter. He has written concertos for a variety of instruments, including two flute concertos, two clarinet concertos and a concerto for organ, two trumpets and strings. Recommended Recordings Dances

Number seven is a huge, apocalyptic work, with passages of sustained savagery in its first movement and musical grotesquery in its finale, that suggest a spiritual crisis barely overcome. For my money it's a blazing masterpiece and it suggests a striking parallel. Here, and elsewhere, we hear the utterly authentic voice of the English Shostakovich. Piers Burton-Page
Biography BACK TO MENU It is a curious phenomenon of our time that we do not always allow artists to cross boundaries or straddle divides. So a composer who seems as much at home in the lighter repertoire or in the medium of film as in the core areas of the symphony of the concerto remains an uncommon creature. Everybody knows The Bridge on the River Kwai , and Malcolm Arnold's music for that film deservedly won him an Oscar. He has written brilliant scores for so many films that the list of famous producers and directors with whom he has collaborated reads like a roll-call of the great and good in Hollywood and Elstree. He has strayed successfully into musicals, jazz, theatre and television; and he has been active as a conductor. This larger-than-life man-about-music has often enjoyed the limelight.
