    About Samuel Barber
Samuel Barber, aggressively reactionary in all his works, had both of his full-length operas premiered by the always conservative Metropolitan Opera. His first two operas, the Pullitzer Prize-winning Vanessa and the often-overlooked chamber opera A Hand of Bridge had their librettos by Barber's long-term companion, the composer Gian Carlo Menotti.

    Biography
    Samuel Barber
Composer USA Born 9 Mar 1910
    Died 23 Jan 1981
Probably America's most performed composer, but not especially American in idiom, Samuel Barber was an unashamed Romantic. Although he did not deliberately ignore the avant-garde, he did express himself traditionally, preferring tonality, lyricism and the classical form. Barber was very skilled at using modern techniques to charm rather than jar his audience.
He played the piano at school and the organ at the local church, and attempted an opera at the age of ten. In 1924, at the age of 14, he enrolled in the first class of the newly opened Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. There, in addition to piano, singing and composition, he studied conducting with Fritz Reiner. Barber became an accomplished baritone and gave many recitals at the Institute.
During his time at the Institute, his compositions were strong enough to be regularly performed. He was awarded prizes and honours for some of them, including the Violin Sonata in 1928 and Overture to 'The School for Scandal' in 1932. The Overture was composed in demonstration sonata form; its performance by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1933 drew favourable attention to the young composer. He also met his life-long partner Gian Carlo Menotti, who was a fellow student.
'Dover Beach' for string quartet and baritone, was premiered in 1933 with Barber himself singing. It was followed by the wonderfully lush 'Music for a Scene from Shelley' which the New York Philharmonic played in 1935.

Samuel Barber (1910-1981)
A great twentieth century Romantic, Samuel Barber was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania to musical parents, and would slowly evolve his own unique musical voice as he travelled the world and surrounded himself with poets, musicians, and art enthusiasts. A compositional perfectionist and a consummate tunesmith, Barber had the unique talent of aborbing every style the twentieth century had to offer, seamlessly integrating them into his work and always retaining control of his lyrical vision. He could craft melodies of haunting beauty without pandering to cheap sentimentality; he could create pieces of disturbing dislocation without turning the reins over to chaos; and his music could sound ironical and witty without resorting to cynicism or gimmickry. Unfortunately his popularity waned after the sixties, and he died believing that his star had fallen.
Today Barber is best known for his Adagio for Strings
