Berlioz, Hector (1803 - 1869)
Orchestral Music The Symphonie fantastique of 1830, an orchestral work that contains autobiographical elements, suggested new paths in composition. This was followed four years later by Harold in Italy, for viola and orchestra, with a narrative programme of literary origin, written for but never performed by the great violinist Paganini. Concert overtures include a Shakespearean King Lear and two overtures based on the work of Sir Walter Scott, Waverley and Rob Roy. The overture Le carnaval romain (Roman Carnival) was derived from his opera Benvenuto Cellini, while Le corsaire has at least Byronic overtones. His interest in Shakespeare, increased by his love affair and later unsuccessful marriage with the Shakespearian actress Harriet Smithson, had a further result in the dramatic symphony Romeo and Juliet. Introduction As a boy he learnt the flute, guitar and, from treatises alone, harmony (he never studied the piano); his first compositions were romances and small chamber pieces. After two unhappy years as a medical student in Paris (1821-3) he abandoned the career chosen for him by his father and turned decisively to music, attending Le Sueur's composition class at the Conservatoire. He entered for the Prix de Rome four times (1827-30) and finally won. Among the most powerful influences on him were Shakespeare, whose plays were to inspire three major works, and the actress Harriet Smithson, whom he idolized. pursued and, after a bizarre courtship, eventually married (1833). Beethoven 's symphonies too made a strong impact, along with Goethe's Faust and the works of Moore, Scott and Byron. The most important product of this time was his startlingly original, five movement Symphonie fantastique Berlioz's 15 months in Italy (1831-2) were significant more for his absorption of warmth, vivacity and local colour than for the official works he wrote there: he moved out of Rome as often as possible and worked on a sequel to the

(updated!) Which of the two powers, Love or Music, can elevate man to the sublimest heights? ... It is a problem, and yet it seems to me that this is the answer: "Love can give no idea of music; music can give an idea of love." ... Why separate them? They are two wings of the soul.

I discovered him at the late age of 18, and over the last few years I have explored his world with great excitement and amazement. Why hadn't I heard of him before? Some of you may ask the same question. Well, I think that there are several answers. There is no doubt that he has been largely misunderstood by much of the musical public, and until recently, you would be very lucky to here any work of his except for the Symphonie Fantastique.

Which Berlioz Requiem Recording Should I Buy?
Of the 41 recordings that I now own of Berlioz' Grande Messe des morts, my favorite in some ways is the one with Jean Fournet conducting the Grand Orchestra of Radio-Paris and the Emile Passani Choir, recorded in occupied Paris more than 50 years ago, in September 1943. This recording, the first to be made, was issued on 78s in Britain and the U.S. sometime around 1948, and later issued on LPs. The sound is rather dim and the closely-miked choir is short of men (understandable given the tough times in France), and there is a slight cut in the Sanctus (essentially, the omission of a written-out repeat). Nevertheless, it is a very passionate reading. Interestingly, it was recorded at St. Eustache, where Berlioz himself had led some performances back in the 1840s. It received a fresh transfer from carefully-preserved original 78 RPM pressings and was reissued in 1998 as Dante-Lys 319-321 in a 3-CD box with Fournet's 1942 recording of

The Romantic Era
Hector Berlioz
Died: Paris, March 8, 1869 Sent to Paris by his father to study medicine, Berlioz instead studied music, supporting himself by writing about music and giving lessons. Berlioz may well have been the first great composer to not be able to play a musical instrument, nor to have shown any musical talent at an early age. But he perservered, and became interested in the vast possibilities of orchestration and the different combinations of instrumental sounds. In 1844, he wrote a book on orchestration (Traite de l'Instrumentation - Treatise on Orchestration) , which is still widely regarded as one of the best in the field. Berlioz' advances in this area contributed greatly to the growth and development of the modern symphony orchestra. In 1830, only three years after the death of

HECTOR BERLIOZ
Died: March 8, 1869. Paris, France
In his own words...

"To render my works properly requires a combination of extreme precision and irresistible verve, a regulated vehemence, a dreamy tenderness, and an almost morbid melancholy." French composer, conductor and writer on music. Berlioz played a decisive role in the development of program music and modern orchestration.
The overwhelming majority of Romantic composers were pianists. Many, such as Chopin and Liszt , were virtuoso performers as well as composers. Hector Berlioz was a notable exception to this rule. In fact, he never studied piano. Berlioz was born to a well-to-do family and as a child learned flute and guitar and managed to teach himself the rudiments of harmony from his reading of textbooks. His parents sent him to Paris in 1821 to study medicine (his father was a doctor), but after two years (miserable years by Berlioz's account) he left his studies behind to attend classes at the conservatory.
During his studies at the conservatory, Berlioz competed for the Prix de Rome four times, finally winning it in 1830. It was in this same year that he wrote his most famous piece, the

    Hector Berlioz (1803-1869)
Hector Berlioz was considered to be the father of French Romanticism in music. His music was always extremely original and grand in scale. As a result of his extreme ideas, he was often viewed as a crazy lunatic by many of his contemporaries. Fortunately, many of his great works survived. These days, some of his most famous works, including Symphonie Fantastique The Damnation of Faust , and The Requiem , are periodically performed in concert halls.
This homepage is the result of a project as part of a sacred music course, Mu 123, taught by Professor Thomas Neenan at the California Institute of Technology. Certain topics pertinent to Berlioz's life have been included. The center of this project is Berlioz's major sacred work, The Requiem . Other information has been included, such as the composer's early life, education, and other important works.
