Biography
Hector Berlioz
Composer France Born 11 Dec 1803
Died 8 Mar 1869
The genre Romanticism could have been specially created for Berlioz. Wild in appearance, passionate in love, he was one of the most enthusiastic of composers: certainly the first, and to some the only, great French Romantic. His innovations include a vast expansion of the orchestra and the creation of hitherto unheard sounds, profoundly influencing later composers, especially Liszt and Wagner. His treatise on orchestration has never been surpassed.
The next year, 1830, was tumultuous. Berlioz lost his heart to a pianist, Marie ('Camille') Moke, and they became engaged. The July Revolution in Paris, which overthrew the Emperor Charles X, inspired Berlioz to write a grand arrangement of the 'Marseillaise'. He composed many works at this time, submitting them for the Prix de Rome which he eventually won. Setting off to spend some time in Italy, (where he met the poet Byron and Mendelssohn), he heard that Marie had broken off their engagement. Furious and bent on revenge, he disguised himself as a maid, packed two pistols and some poison, and prepared to return to Paris to murder Marie and her mother before killing himself.
Wisely, he did not carry out his plan, but remained in Italy, returning to Paris in 1832. He sought out his previous lover, the actress Harriet Smithson, and declared his love. She spurned him again, until finally he took poison in front of her. After this she agreed to marry him in the following year. Although the marriage could hardly be described as happy, the couple remained together until she died.

Louis-Hector Berlioz
Died Monday, March 8, 1869, at Paris, aged 65yr 2m 25d English version Instant but possibly unreliable translation into French! Born in 1803, Berlioz won early success by winning the Prix de Rome in 1830 and with the first performance of his Symphonie Fantastique Benvenuto Cellini Berlioz was therefore forced to concentrate on symphonic, concert, and choral music, and to write newspaper reviews to support himself financially, eventually becoming embittered by the enforced servitude and failure to be accepted by the musical public of Paris. His greatest opera, The Trojans Berlioz stands virtually on his own, since aside from friendships with many of the German romantic composers of his era, such as Liszt, Mendelssohn and Wagner, he shared little in common with them, and wrote music completely unlike any of his contemporaries in France; he had few pupils, and founded no school of composers writing in his style, as it was too individual to easily be assimilated, although the Russian Five, Mussorgsky especially, used Berlioz as a model for orchestration.

Berlioz, Hector Evenings with the Orchestra . Edited, translated, and with an Introduction by Jacques Barzun. With a new Foreword by Peter Bloom. xxvi, 382 p., 1 halftone. 1956, 1999 Paper $16.00 0-226-04374-6 Spring 1999 During the performances of fashionable operas in an unidentified but "civilized" town in northern Europe, the musicians (with the exception of the conscientious bass drummer) tell tales, read stories, and exchange gossip to relieve the tedium of the bad music they are paid to perform. In this delightful and now classic narrative written by the brilliant composer and critic Hector Berlioz, we are privy to twenty-five highly entertaining evenings with a fascinating group of distracted performers. As we near the two-hundredth anniversary of Berlioz's birth, Jacques Barzun's pitch-perfect translation of Evenings with the Orchestra with a new foreword by Berlioz scholar Peter Bloomtestifies to the enduring pleasure found in this most witty and amusing book. "[F]ull of knowledge, penetration, good sense, individual wit, stock humor, justifiable exasperation, understanding exaggeration, emotion and rhetoric of every kind."Randall Jarrell

März 1869 in Paris.

Berlioz, Hector (1803-1869)
Introduction
After Beethoven died, everyone lived in his shadow. Very few composers were able to emerge as true voices after he died. Brahms and Schubert were two. Berlioz was France's answer. And he took symphonic form to a new level.
Works
Symphonie Fantastique op. 14; Tristia op. 18: This recording is a Grammy Award winer. Normally that wouldn't mean anything, but usually the awards aren't a joke in the technical and classical categories as they are in the popular categories. This is one of those performances that gives you everything you could possibly want from a recording: impeccable performance from everyone involved, great music, great audio quality. This is one of the essential classic works that belong in any music library, and this is the disc to get, without reservation. The filler, Tristia, is a pretty cool choral piece.
