When his aunt sent her upright piano to the Bernstein home, 10 year old Lenny looked at it, hit the key, cried "Ma, I want lessons," ... and the rest is history. In 1943, Bernstein was appointed assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. A few months later - at the age of 25 - Lenny burst on the national music scene when he substituted at the last minute for an ailing conductor. His brilliant performance earned a tremendous ovation from the audience, and an enthusiastic review on the front page of The New York Times. Bernstein was named music director of the New York Philharmonic in 1958, becoming the first American born person to head a top symphony orchestra. In his 11 years in this position, the New York Philharmonic enjoyed unparalleled success and prestige ... and the orchestra's recordings became best sellers. His association with the Israel Philharmonic began shortly after the establishment of the Jewish State, when Bernstein conducted seven official concerts in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa.

Bernstein was also a composer of great skill and ability. He wrote three symphonies for orchestra, Facsimile, Fancy Free, Kaddish, and the Serenade for Violin and Orchestra. His musical theater credits include West Side Story, Candide, and Wonderful Town. West Side Story achieved popular appeal that few musicals do, songs like "Somewhere", and "Maria" have become standards. In addition to all of this he also composed many other chamber pieces, and other works. He also wrote many books on music making and music education. Leonard Bernstein did more for the position of American classical music than any other composer. He kept on conducting and making music until his death from a heart attack in 1990. Daniel Friel

Leonard Bernstein
Leonard Bernstein (August 18, 1918 - October 14, 1990) was an American composer and orchestra conductor. Bernstein was born in Lawrence, MA on August 18, 1918 and died in 1990. Bernstein was highly regarded as a director, composer, pianist, and educator. He is probably best known to the public as long time music director the New York City Symphony; for conducting concerts by many of the world's leading orchestras; and for writing the music for the musical Westside Story. All told he wrote three symphonies, two operas, five musicals, and numerous other pieces. Bernstein's politics were decidedly left wing, but unlike some of his contemporaries, he was not blacklisted in the 1950s. Bernstein married actress and author Felicia Montealegre in 1951. The couple had three children. [Adapted from Wikipedia

Biography
Leonard Bernstein
Composer and conductor USA Born 25 Aug 1918
Died 14 Oct 1990
Bernstein was a larger than life figure on the world's music stage as composer, conductor, pianist and teacher. His generosity of spirit was impressive. A brilliant conductor, he made hundreds of recordings with the world's leading orchestras, and was particularly famous for his recordings of Haydn and Mahler. His own musicals 'West Side Story', 'Candide' and music for the film 'On the Waterfront' made him known to the general public.
Bernstein - born in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and known as 'Louis' until he was 16 - studied piano from the age of ten. At the age of 14, he took lessons from Helen Coates in Boston, remaining devoted to her all his life. He gave school concerts and conducted an amateur production of Carmen when he was 16. In 1935, he went to Harvard and met the composers Walter Piston and Aaron Copland. Through Dmitri Mitropoulos, he became interested in conducting professionally, and studied under Fritz Reiner in 1939 at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. At Tanglewood, in 1940 and 1941, he came under the more lasting influence of Sergei Koussevitzky. He admired and loved this famous conductor and, in turn, Koussevitzky recognised Bernstein's genius and did all he could to promote his career.
In 1942, 'Lennie', as he was now known, moved to New York and became assistant conductor to Artur Rodzinski at the New York Philharmonic. That autumn, Bruno Walter was due to conduct the orchestra but fell ill. Rodzinski, four-hours drive away said: 'Call Bernstein!'. The concert was a huge success, the story hit the headlines and Bernstein became famous almost overnight.

Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990) - formidable musician
Although having a huge reputation as an interpreter and composer of classical music, Bernstein is probably most readily associated with musicals in general and West Side Story in particular. This is a modern reworking of the Romeo and Juliet story for stage and film. Full of Latin rhythms the musical manages to have New York gang members sing and dance and yet still seem tough and threatening. Anyone seeing the making of the album of West Side Story with Jose Carreras and Kiri Te Kanawa will agree with the description of Bernstein as "formidable" but he was formidable also in the sense of the breadth of his musical taste and experience and the total dedication to his art. Bernstein was a hard-working musician, starting out initially as a pianist. He studied at Harvard University where was coached by Walter Piston and Aaron Copland (with whom he formed a life-long musical association). Then at Tanglewood Music Centre he studied with Serge Koussevitzky. These influences led him from full-time performing into the art of composing. He became assistant conductor of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, where a particular event gave him instant acclaim and a widespread following. Bruno Walter was to conduct a significant concert by the orchestra which was to be broadcast live on Radio. Walter was unable to fulfil this engagement and the principle conductor (Artur Rodzinski, who had appointed Bernstein) was away, and so Bernstein was called upon to fill in. He later became the orchestra's musical director, and was to become one of the foremost conductors of the day, leading orchestras throughout the world and gaining a reputation for his interpretations of composers such as
