Uit zijn levensloop weten we dat hij omstreeks 1543 geboren werd en vermoedelijk leerling was van Tallis. Hij werd organist in Lincoln en lid van de Chapel Royal te Londen, en samen met Tallis hoforganist. Meer officiële posten of onderscheidingen vielen hem niet ten deel, waarschijnlijk omdat hij katholiek gebleven is: tijdens het leven van Queen Elizabeth (die bvb. wel Bull een beschermende hand boven het hoofd hield) stond de godsdienstonvrede verscheidene kansen in de weg. About the 9th century, theorists got the upper hand in music, and everything had to be fitted into diatonic modes to be officially acceptable. Of course, good musicians have always insisted on singing in tune and have always cared more about their sound than about theory, so musica ficta came to mean the rules that musicians used to translate from modes back to good music, and that is the way I always interpret them. A A My Ladye Nevells Booke was completed in 1591 by one of Byrd's colleagues at the Royal chapel, possibly corrected by Byrd personally, then presented to Queen Elizabeth I, and Parthenia was engraved by the finest engraver in England, also with the care appropriate for a royal gift, mostly from composers' manuscripts, in 1612. My other major source is the folio of Catholic composers' works copied from divers sources, probably by a Francis Tregian between 1609 and 1619, known today as the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book A part of the Fitzwilliam Virginal Book S o, printing is black and white, and music isn't. A musician has to peer through the limitations of notation to hear a live person, the composer, then bring that composer's ideas to life in the performer's world. The further back one goes in time, the more necessary it is to accept that the composer's world can never exist again - too much of that world has been lost to truly recreate it. My approach is to study sources as close as possible to the time, apply the rules of the time, use instruments of the time, then let my ears be the guide, based on the whole oeuvre of the composer.

William Byrd (c. 1542-1623) English composer, born in London in 1542 or 1543; died 4 July, 1623. He was the son of a musician, and studied music principally under Thomas Tallis . He became organist at Lincoln Cathedral in 1563, chorister in the Chapel Royal in 1570, and in 1575 received the title of Organist of the Chapel Royal without being obliged to perform the functions of that office. Byrd was the most distinguished contrapuntist and the most prolific composer of his time in England. Fétis calls him the English Palestrina . He was the first Englishman to write madrigals, a form which originated in Italy in the thirteenth century, and received its highest development in the sixteenth century at the hands of Arcadelt and other masters. An organist and performer of the first order upon the virginals, Byrd wrote for the latter instrument an enormous number of compositions, many of which are played today. His chief significance lies, however, in his compositions for the Church, of which he produced a great many. In 1607 he published a collection of gradualia for the whole ecclesiastical year, among which is to be found a three-part setting of the words of the multitude in the Passion according to St. John. A modern edition of this setting was published in 1899. In 1611 "Psalms, Songs and Sonnets, Some Solemn, Others Joyful, Framed to the Life of the Words, Fit for Voyces or Viols, etc." appeared. Probably in the same year was issued "Parthenia", a collection of virginal music, in which Byrd collaborated with J. Bull and Orlando

Ogan The greatest English composer of his generation, comparable in stature to his most distinguished continental contemporaries, William Byrd was a versatile composer. Although remaining a Catholic, loyalty that cost him considerable trouble in times of persecution in England, he served as a member of the Chapel Royal, providing music for the liturgy of the Church of England and, on a more private scale, for his fellow-Catholics. Biographical Information on William Byrd Links CHURCH MUSIC Byrd's compositions for the church can be separated into two categories; those for the Catholic liturgy and those designed for the officially recognised Church of England. The first category includes settings of the Mass for three, four and five voices, and a large quantity of other works for the various seasons of the church year. For the Church of England Byrd wrote a Great Service and three other service settings, using the texts of the Anglican liturgy. In addition to the above compositions Byrd composed a number of anthems and psalm-settings, and consort songs with sacred texts of one sort or another.

While geologists are drawn to the site for its invaluable display of million year old fossil layers, researchers and writers come for just the opposite reason - to explore mysteries in history which the ancient walls do not reveal so easily. An almost eerie peace hangs in the sultry shady woods along the 600 foot long cliffs, lending itself perfectly to some novel of romance or adventure. However, if this river could talk, its stories would rival any tale the finest fiction writer could create. From prehistoric upheaval, to native American migration, to Civil War intrigue, to riverboat extravaganzas, to ravages by hurricanes, the area surrounding Cliffs of the Neuse has survived assaults by man and nature. To explore the fascinating background of the region, the state park museum tucked back in the trees atop the cliffs offers an excellent beginning. The museum offers a taste of the mysteries hidden in time here, from the sea that once lapped at the cliffs' uppermost peaks, to the rowdy sounds of a thriving river resort. Cliffs of the Neuse State Park was established in 1945 from an initial 291 acres deeded from Lionel Weil, of Goldsboro, and 30 acres from the Davis family of Mt. Olive. William Byrd epitomizes the spirit of the southern colonial gentry. The heir to 1,040 hectares, which he enlarged to 7,160 hectares, he was a merchant, trader, and planter. His library of 3,600 books was the largest in the South. He was born with a lively intelligence that his father augmented by sending him to excellent schools in England and Holland. He visited the French Court, became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was friendly with some of the leading English writers of his day, particularly William Wycherley and William Congreve. His London diaries are the opposite of those of the New England Puritans, full of fancy dinners, glittering parties, and womanizing, with little introspective soul-searching.
