Francesco Cilea A Short Biography
B orn in Palmi (Reggio Calabria) on July 23 1866, Cilea showed since childhood a clear bent for music.
He began studying under Francesco Florimo at the San Pietro a Majella Royal Music College in Naples. Then he was a pupil of Paolo Serrao, Beniamino Cesi and Giuseppe Martucci, and under their direction he stood out thanks to his diligence and talent. He was awarded the gold medal of the Ministry of Public Education.
At the end of his studies, he produced the melodrama "Gina", that was successfully staged at the College Theatre. This opera paved him the way for the composition of "La Tilda", A. Zanardini's melodrama in three acts, staged in Florence, Vienna and in other cities.
Later, at the International Opera-House in Milan in the evening of November 27 1897, he staged L. Marenco's drama "L'Arlesiana"; among the leading singers there was Enrico Caruso, who became well-known thanks to the famous romanza "Il Lamento di Federico".
The play-drama in four acts "Adriana Lecouvrer", by A. Colautti, was acclaimed in the same Opera-House in Milan, on November 6 1902 and by this time it is well-known all over the world.

Italian composer and teacher who studied at the Naples Conservatoire and who, after two rather unsuccessful attempts at composing opera, supported himself by teaching in Florence and in Palermo. Later he became director of Naples Conservatoire, a position he retained until he retired in 1936. Cilea achieved a certain amount of success with the opera "Adriana Lecouvreur" (1902) which is still performed. Francesco Cilea Works
The 4-act opera Adriana Lecouvreur, with a libretto by Arturo Colautti, is based on the play by the French writers Scribe and Legouvé. The action takes place in Paris and is the tragic story of the actress Adriana Lecouvreur and her lover Maurizio, Count of Saxony. The best known arias from the opera are for the soprano Adriana, her "Io son' l'umile ancella" (I am the humble handmaid), in which she expresses her humility as an interpreter of the words of Corneille, and her tragically ironic "Poveri fiori", when she receives from Maurizio the flowers that she had given him, now withered, and poisoned by her rival.
