Muzio Clementi is commonly called the father of modern piano playing. He was born in Rome, Italy, in 1752. His father was a silversmith, and became aware of his son`s musical talent at a young age. When he was seven, Clementi was sent to musical instruction. He was so good a pupil that two years later he gained a position as an organist. A rich Englishman, by the name of Beckford, was impressed by Clementi`s gift, and decided to take him from his family to England. In that country, Clementi received an excellent education in music and academics. In 1770, Clementi made his first performance on the piano. His audience was greatly taken with his playing, and this was the beginning of a tremendously successful career as a concert pianist. He was raised to the highest level of the pianists of the day in short order, and was widely considered the greatest piano virtuoso in the world. Clementi started a European tour in 1781, when he travelled to France, Germany, and Austria. In Vindabona, Clementi was asked by the Emperor Josef II to enter a musical duel with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Clementi performed a piece of his own composition, a piano sonata in B-Flat Major. Mozart performed a dazzling series of variations. Such was the ability of both these composers and virtuosi that the Emperor was forced to declare a duel. However, the main theme of he B-Flat Major sonata captured Mozart`s imagination, and ten years later he used it himself in the overture to his opera

Italian/English (1752-1832)
Clementi, though best known for his piano sonatinas, also composed a great many piano sonatas, symphonies, concerti, and etudes. Lamentably, many of these have been lost over the years, and are not properly or suffiently exposed to the public.
Clementi was born in Rome in 1752. His father, a silversmith, was an avid musician, and encouraged Muzio to develop his inherent musical aptitude. In fact, early in his lifetime, Muzio showed himself to be a Mozartean prodigyby the age of 9, he was a salaried church organist, as well as a meritorious composer, to the point where he gained the attention of the influential English businessman, Peter Beckford. Beckford, impressed with Muzio's talent, adopted him and brought him to his estate in Wiltshire, England. Here, Muzio persued his studies in music, as well as other subjects, and formed a reputation as one of England's premier pianists and composers.
In December of 1781, Clementi was officially invited to participate in a musical competition against the Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Both participants were asked to perform their own compositions, as well as to improvise. Among Clementi's repertoire were the Toccata, Op. 11, and the Sonata in B-Flat, Op. 24, Nr (later to be recorded by Stephen Storace as Op. 47, Nr. 2 in 1804). Though there was no decisive winner , Clementi later said of Mozart's technique: "Until then, I have never heard of anyone play with such grace." Ironically, however, Mozart was much less gracious, criticizing Clementi's style. (as well as making several other "non-flattering" remarks)

During the period 1784 to 1790 he published (as opp. 11-25) some 40 works for keyboard. He settled permanently in London, becoming a successful pianist, pedagogue, and music publisher; be continued to concertize, and his firm (originally called Longman, Clementi, and Co.) thrived. His pupils included Johann Baptist Cramer. When his popularity in London began declining in the 1790s, he concentrated on teaching and publishing. His Introduction to the Art of Playing on the Piano Forte appeared in London in 1801. Nevertheless he continued composing, working steadily during the 1790s on a set of six grand symphonies (never completed) that he hoped would secure his place in music history. In 1802 he embarked on another concert tour, to Paris, Vienna, and St. Petersburg, with his pupil John Field. While in Vienna in 1807, Clementi the publisher acquired rights to issue five of Beethoven's latest compositions. Back in London, he was appointed director of the Philharmonic Society. During the 1820s he continued directing concerts of his works and made other tours of the Continent. His three big piano sonatas op. 50 appeared in 1821 in London, Paris, and Leipzig. The three volumes of his highly successful pedagogical work Gradus ad Parnassum, or The Art of Playing on the Piano Forte

N O composer had a more fortunate life-span than Muzio Clementi. He was born in Rome in 1752, two years after Bach's death, while Handel was still an active figure on the musical scene of London, where Clementi would spend much of his life; he died in 1832, a year before the birth of Brahms , just as Berlioz, Chopin Schumann , and Mendelssohn were getting their careers under way. In 1781 Clementi engaged in a piano competition with Mozart in Vienna, for the benefit of Emperor Joseph II; during the 1790s he shared the stage of London's Hanover Square Concert Rooms with the visiting Haydn ; in 1807, once again in Vienna, he carried on elaborate negotiations with Beethoven that resulted in his becoming the composer's principal English publisher; and on June 21, 1824, he attended the London debut of Franz Liszt . During most of his life he was more famous than Mozart, his reputation exceeded only by those of Haydn and Beethoven both of whom he not only was influenced by but also influenced. In addition, Clementi was one of the premier keyboard virtuosos and teachers of his day, and he ran a highly successful publishing firm that also manufactured pianos. At his death he was buried with high ceremony in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey. Yet today Clementi's name is scarcely known. His monumental

Clementi, Muzio (1752 - 1832)
The piano music of Muzio Clementi, or at least his pedagogical Gradus ad Parnassum, has in part been well enough known to generations of ambitious keyboard-players. Clementi himself, born in Rome in 1752, was taken as a boy to England by Peter Beckford, cousin of the eccentric William Beckford. There he developed his abilities as a performer. His subsequent career brought success as a composer, teacher and pianist, and later as a manufacturer of pianos. He died at Evesham in 1832. Piano Music Clementi wrote a great deal of music for the piano, including more than a hundred sonatas. He published a number of pedagogical works, of which the Introduction to the Art of Playing the Piano Forte and Gradus ad Parnassum are the best known. Recommended Recording
