Paul Creston Paul Creston was born 10 October 1906 in New York of Italian parentage. Entirely self-taught with the exception of piano and organ lessons in his youth, Creston pursued studies in theory, composition, literature, and philosophy while working to support himself and his poor immigrant family. Fiercely independent by nature, the composer developed his style free of any particular school of thought or teacher's influence and made rhythm a cornerstone of his work, often emphasizing shifting subdivisions of regular meters. He created works in many genres including five symphonies, concertos for violin, piano, saxophone, and marimba, several dance works, songs, and choral, chamber, and instrumental pieces. Creston considered his greatest "teachers" to be Bach, Scarlatti, Chopin, Debussy, and Ravel. He wrote in an accessible, conservative style that incorporated song and dance idioms and often featured unusual instruments like the trombone, marimba, or saxophone. Lush harmonies and expansive orchestrations characterize an often brash and spontaneous body of work, organized around a remarkable mastery of thematic development evident in works such as the Symphony No. 2

Yet only one piece seems available on CD: his Celebration Overture , Op. 61, in a fine performance by Jack Stamp and the Keystone Wind Ensemble. Fortunately, the scores to his works are a bit more available than the recordings, and a biography is available.

Paul Creston (1906-1985) was a well-known composer in his day who made rhythm the cornerstone of his work. Born to Italian immigrant parents in New York City, he was essentially a self-taught composer because of poor family finances. In addition to composing, Creston worked as a movie theater organist and was organist at St. Malachy's Church in New York from 1934 to 1967. In 1968, he became artist-in-residence at Central Washington State College. During this time, he appeared as guest conductor and lecturer at over 40 colleges and universities across the country. Creston wrote 120 compositions with opus numbers and over 35 orchestral works including 6 symphonies. He is especially recognized for his contributions to the literature of neglected instruments such as marimba, trombone, harp, accordion, and saxophone. Creston also composed works without opus numbers, especially for radio, television, and film. He composed for the Philco Hall of Fame and also contributed scores to the CBS-TV series The Twentieth Century . In addition, Creston wrote numerous articles in music journals and authored two books:
