Elgar, Edward (1857 - 1934)
Edward Elgar was arguably the leading English composer of his generation and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. Born in the West of England in 1857, the son of a piano-tuner and owner of a music shop, he earned his earlier living as an organist, violinist and teacher in his own part of the country. After his marriage in 1889 he found himself able to move to London as a composer, but success only came later, after his return to the West Country, confirmed by the Enigma Variations, first performed in London in 1899. He wrote relatively little after the death of his wife in 1920. Choral/Orchestral Music Elgar wrote a number of oratorios. The Dream of Gerontius, a setting of words by Cardinal Newman, is rather different, a remarkable study of a man on his deathbed. Orchestral Music The Enigma Variations, with its portraits in each variation of one of the composer's friends and its unsolved musical puzzle, in the well known melody that Elgar claimed would go with the theme itself, is one of the best of his works. More familiar, if less substantial, must be the Pomp and Circumstance Marches. The concert overture Cockaigne is an evocation of London, while the Elegy, the Introduction and Allegro and the Serenade, all for string orchestra, offer music of the highest quality. Elgar's Cello Concerto, written in 1919, enjoys great popularity, not yet matched by that of the earlier Violin Concerto, composed before the war. Elgar's two completed symphonies are comparable, at least, to the work of other great symphonists of the period.

ENGLANDS GREATEST COMPOSER
The Museum
The cottage where Elgar was born on 2nd June 1857 is in the heart of the countryside he loved, near the Teme valley and facing the Malvern Hills. The cottage now houses a unique collection of price-less manuscripts, scores, concert programmes and press cuttings. The collection of photographs, spans those from the family snap-shot albums to records of formal and solemn occasions. The composer's desk is there, laid out by his daughter, Carice, in the way her mother prepared it when her father was composing. This and many personal memorabilia record the great composer's life, work, family and friends. Records, cassettes, music, books, postcards and souvenir items for all the family are on sale.

Born near Worcester in England, the son of a piano-tuner and owner of a music shop, Elgar was self-taught in composition and began his career by writing pieces for local perfomances. He became the leading English composer of his generation and a significant figure among late Romantic European musicians. In 1889 he married one of his piano pupils, Caroline Roberts, and moved to London. Success came later, after his return to the West Country, with the completion of the "Enigma Variations", first performed in London in 1899. Elgar was capable of expressing dominant and patriotic themes in his music. His Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1, adapted for the coronation of King Edward VII, is extremely popular even today. After the death of his wife in 1920 he seemed to lose his previous inspiration and wrote relatively little. He died before completing the work on his third symphony. Edward Elgar Works Elgar wrote a number of oratorios.

The play, The Starlight Express , had been adapted by Violet Pearn from the novel A Prisoner in Fairyland by Algernon Blackwood . As demanded by the times, the story is a nonsensical piece of escapism. A family of children, trapped in the oppressive world of adults, forms a secret society whose members collect stardust and live in star caves. The seek to rescue their parents from an earthly existence and eventually succeed, taking them also to a star cave. The story contains strong similarities not only with J M Barrie 's Peter Pan but also with Elgar's own childhood musical fantasies from which he subsequently extracted the two

The locomotive was built at English Electric Vulcan Foundry Works, Newton-Le-Willows and was delivered new to British Railways on the 12th March 1968. Numbered D407 the loco entered service on the 16th March allocated to the London Midland Region Western Lines, until June of that year when she was allocated to D05 Stoke-on-Trent Division. On the 2nd July 1971 she received her first light overhaul at Crewe Works and was reallocated to Crewe Diesel depot in May 1973. April 1974, saw the loco entered Crewe Locomotive Works for an Intermediate overhaul and re-enter service carrying her new TOPS number of 50007. The following month saw 50007 reallocated to the Western Region and allocated to Laira depot, Plymouth. With electrification complete on the Midland Region, the entire Class 50 fleet was eventually transferred to the Western Region. Being a small class of locomotives (50) the Western Region had the perfect opportunity to name the class and decided to name them all after Navy Warships. 50007 was named ' Hercules ' on the 6th April 1978, without ceremony, the plates being fitted at its home depot of Laira. With the work load at Crewe Works expanding, a decision was reach to move all future overhauls on class 50's to Doncaster Works. 50007's first visit to these works was during July 1979 when she arrived for an Intermediate overhaul. In order to prolong the life expectancy of these locomotives, a decision was taken to complete refurbish the class during the early 1980's, which involved removing various items from the original design. 50007 arrived at Doncaster Works on 13th September 1982 and re-entered traffic in the new striking BR Large-Logo livery on 8th March 1983.

His music brought British music into the twentieth century, first through his rich vocal compositions and later with his graceful orchestral music. Born into a musical family, Edward Elgar spent much of his youth in his father's music shop. He began composing at the age of 10 and showed enormous talent on the piano without ever receiving any formal musical training. His family's comparative lack of money hampered any attempts at advanced study, but by the age of 16, Elgar decided to embark on his career of choice, as a freelance musician.

(Broadheath, 1857 - Worcester 1934) English composer, conductor and violinist Probably the greatest British composer of all time. His music was inspired by his cultural interests and his love for the English countryside, as well as by the music of other great European composers. In his output we encounter every genre of classical music except opera. Elgar and his music embody the essence of England. Elgar's father was a piano tuner and owned a music shop. The boy took lessons locally in organ, violin and other instruments. He amassed as much musical knowledge and experience as he could in his father's shop, church music activities and local music societies. Plans to study in Leipzig never materialised due to lack of money, but he took violin lessons with Adolf Pollitzer in London. At the age of 16 he became a lifelong freelance musician, and never held a regular post. His career got off to a slow start. He was the assistant, later successor, to his father as organist at St George's Catholic Church. He also played violin in various orchestras. During the 1890s his first compositions were publicly performed and gradually found recognition. In 1897 his Imperial March, composed for Queen Victoria's Jubilee, brought him success, and his fame spread with works such as the Enigma Variations, the Cockaigne Overture and the Pomp and Circumstance Marches (the first of which was to become world-famous as Land of Hope and Glory). He wrote the finest English oratorio since the time of Handel, The Dream of Gerontius. In 1920 Elgar's wife died, and for the remaining 14 years of his life he published little of importance. Biographical notes (c) 1996 Philips Classics ProductionsA selection of major works.
