Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka
Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, b. June 1 (N.S.), 1804, d. Feb. 15 (N.S.), 1857, is universally considered the father of RUSSIAN MUSIC. He received desultory musical instruction, including piano lessons from John Field during his education in St. Petersburg, and wrote several unimportant youthful pieces. Glinka spent some time in Berlin, where he received elementary instruction in composition from Siegfried Dehn. The two major musical influences in his life were the folk music that he grew up with in the country and the operas of Vincenzo Bellini and Gaetano Donizetti.
Inspired with the idea of creating a true Russian opera, Glinka turned to a court official, Baron G. F. Rosen, who gave him the libretto of Ivan Susanin; or, A Life for the Tsar, a celebration of the Romanov dynasty and Russian patriotism in which the characteristics of Russian and Polish national music are vividly contrasted. First performed in 1836, the opera was an immediate success. For the first time, genuine Russian music was heard on the operatic stage with stunning effect, particularly in the choral scenes. This highly original music is interlarded, however, with set pieces in the ubiquitous Italian operatic style of the time. Glinka's second opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila (1842), based on a tale by Aleksandr Pushkin, was less successful, although it contains some striking and original scenes. Glinka again used Russian sources, but he also employed Eastern music and Viennese dance music.

Glinka, Mikhail Ivanovich
Glinka is commonly regarded as the founder of Russian nationalism in music. His influence on Balakirev, self-appointed leader of the later group of five nationalist composers, was considerable. As a child he had some lessons from the Irish pianist John Field, but his association with music remained purely amateur, until visits to Italy and in 1833 to Berlin allowed concentrated study and subsequently a greater degree of assurance in his composition, which won serious attention both at home and abroad. His Russian operas offered a synthesis of Western operatic form with Russian melody, while orchestral music, with skilful instrumentation, offered a combination of the traditional and the exotic. Glinka died in Berlin in 1857. Operas Glinka's first Russian opera, A Life for the Tsar, was well received at its first staging in 1836. His second full opera, Ruslan and Lyudmila, with a libretto by Pushkin, proved less acceptable at its first staging in St. Petersburg in 1842. The Overtures to these operas make effective curtain-raisers. Recommended Recording Overtures: A Life for the Tsar Ruslan and Lyudmila

Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka (1804-1857) is often called the "father of Russian music." Tchaikovsky commented that the single work Kamarinskaya contained the whole of Russian music as an acorn contains a whole oak tree. Glinka's devotion to Russian music wasn't always the case, however. As a young man, he was fascinated with Italian composers to the point of imitation, and it wasn't until he was about thirty that he committed himself to a nationalist style of composition. This is a useful CD with little competition. About half is comprised of orchestral excerpts from A Life for the Tsar Ivan Susanin Ruslan and Lyudmila A Valse-Fantaisie , orchestrated near the end of Glinka's life from a piano work he had written nearly twenty years earlier, presents a string of attractive tunes, most of them gently melancholy. Tchaikovsky clearly was inspired by this work, as well as by Kamarinskaya , which follows it on this CD. The latter work is in ABA'B' form and is typically Russian. The first section is governed by a measured tune, and the second is an energetic dance, with the theme introduced by the strings, entering in turn from top to bottom. The
