Morton Gould
Morton Gould has led a richly diverse life in American music as composer, conductor, pianist, duo- pianist, arranger, administrator, and radio and film personality. A crossover composer well before crossover had a name, Gould has written prolifically in all classical forms and also for film, television, dance, Broadway, jazz ensemble, and symphonic band. He has always "gone his own way", and has taken the label of the electic as a credo. He has taken creative inspiration from any and all sources of popular culture, jazz, folk, blues, gospel, country, rocks; he finds nothing "Improper" in adapting those borrowed impulses and insperations into his chosen classical work.
Morton Gould was elected to the American Academy of Arts and letters in 1986, named Musical America's Composer of the Year in 1993, and, served the distinguished eigth year tenure as president of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. On December 4th, 1994, he was honored by the John F. Kennedy Center for the performing arts. The ceremony has aired nationwide over the CBS network.
His first work was written at age six and Morton Gould has not stopped since. A few highlights of his earlier years include being the pianist for the premier run through of Gershwin's immoral Pergy and Bess, He was staff pianist for Radio City Music Hall during his heyday, he had his own radio show on the Mutual, and later CBS network, he has composed successfull Broadway musicals, and starred in Hollywood feature film opposite Jane Powell, entitled Delightfully Dangerous.

M orton Gould was a child prodigy, playing the piano at the age of 4 and published his first piece of music, a waltz titled, "Just Six," two years later. He performed frequently throughout his childhood, on radio and in concert and vaudeville halls. He graduated from Julliard before the age of 16 and was hired as staff arranger and pianist at Radio City Music Hall. In his early 20s, he moved to NBC radio and arranged and conducted the studio orchestra on a number of its regular shows. His composition "Pavanne" was written at this time and was widely performed and recorded. He got his own show showcasing "symphonic jazz" in 1939, and another series featuring general orchestral works in 1943. Throughout this time, he was also composing serious pieces on commissioned by such heavyweight conductors as Stokowski, Fritz Reiner, and Dmitri Mitropoulos. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including Kennedy Center Honors in 1994 and the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for his "Stringmusic," commissioned by the National Symphony Orchestra and composed as a tribute to its music director, Mstislav Rostropovich.

His two-movement Symphony No. 4 for Band, "West Point," is the most significant piece, featuring a marching machine in the scoring (unfortunately replaced by stomping feet in the otherwise wonderful Fennell recording). The Ballad for Band may be the most melodic of these works, and is given a lovely rendition in Corporon's recording.

Morton Gould
updated 5 April 2002
Morton Gould "Composing is my life blood," said Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Morton Gould. "That is basically me, and although I have done many things in my life - conducting, playing piano, and so on - what is fundamental is my being a composer." Capping a life full of achievements in all facets of music are Morton Gould's 1995 Pulitzer Prize for Stringmusic , commissioned by the National Symphony for the final season of music director Mstislav Rostropovich, and his 1994 Kennedy Center Honor in recognition of lifetime contributions to American culture. Born in Richmond Hill, New York, on 10 December 1913, Gould was recognized early on as a child prodigy with the ability to improvise and compose. At the age of six he had his first composition published. He studied at the Institute of Musical Art (now the Juilliard School), but his most important teachers were Abby Whiteside (piano) and Vincent Jones (composition). During the Depression, Gould (still a teenager) found work in New York's vaudeville and movie theaters. When Radio City Music Hall opened, the young Gould was its staff pianist. By the age of 21 he was conducting and arranging a series of orchestral programs for WOR Mutual Radio. Gould attained national prominence through his work in radio, as he appealed to a wide-ranging audience with his combination of classical and popular programming. During the 1940s Gould appeared on the "Cresta Blanca Carnival" program and "The Chrysler Hour" (CBS), reaching an audience of millions.

Gould, Morton (1913-1996)
Morton Gould was born in New York in December 1913, and was educated at the New York Institute of Musical Art. At the age of 21 he was engaged to conduct and arrange a series of light music programmes for radio, and was soon in demand for cinema and theatre work. He was to enjoy a dual career in both 'serious' and 'light' music, drawing much of his inspiration from musical and visual American themes. Already enjoying considerable success, in 1947 he wrote an orchestral arrangement of the folk song When Johnny comes Marching home, calling is American Salute . It became the most frequently performed 20 th century American symphonic work.
Gould was to equally enjoy a career as a conductor, working with all the major American symphony orchestras, recording with a number of them the symphonic repertoire. He wrote a sizeable catalogue of music, including musical comedies, though his main field of work was in orchestral compositions, and included three works he described as American Symphonettes , which was Gould's light music symphony.
