Brief biography
The Czech composer Janacek was born in Hukvaldy in Moravia on 3rd July 1854. Hukvaldy now is more like a small town than the tiny village - Pod Hukvaldy - of his youth, but the school in which he was born and the adjacent church are still used. The nearby house which he purchased later in life is a museum. He was the ninth of the village schoolmaster's 14 children. At the age of eleven he was sent to the monastery school in Brno where he sang in the choir. After graduating he went back to the monastery as a teacher and deputy choirmaster, and his earliest organ and choral works date from this period. He decided to improve his musical skills with a view to a career in music and moved to Prague where he trained at the Organ School. He had become a friend of Dvorak in 1877. In 1879 he attended the Leipzig Music Conservatoire to study composition. The next Spring he attended the Vienna Conservatoire but left after three months because of an argument with his music supervisor.
Janacek married one of his piano students, Zdenka Schulzova on 13th July 1881 about two weeks before her 16th birthday. He participated in the foundation of an organ school in Brno which opened its doors in 1882, with Janacek as director. Olga, the Janaceks' elder child, was born August 1882. For some time the couple had separated but patched up their differences by mid- 1884. In this year Janacek started the music journal "Hudebni listy". A son, Vladimir, was born in 1888, but he died of scarlet fever in November 1890. The death was a tragedy to both parents, as was their daughter's death in 1903, and did not help their difficult marriage.

Leos Janacek was born at Hukvaldy on 3 July 1854 and died at Moravská Ostrava on 12 August 1928. He was a chorister at the Augustinian 'Queen's' Monastery in Old Brno, where the choirmaster Pavel Krizkovský took a keen interest in his musical education. After completing his basic schooling he trained as a teacher and, except for a period at the Prague Organ School, he spent 1872-9 largely as a schoolteacher and choral conductor in Brno. In 1879 he enrolled at the Leipzig Conservatory, where he developed his interest in composition. MIDI FILE - Sextet "Mladi" (15'32'') After a month in Vienna he retumed to Brno in May 1880; there he became engaged to one of his pupils, Zdenka Schulzová, whom he married in July 1881. In Brno, Janacek took up his former activities, and he also founded and directed an organ school and edited a new musical journal. After composing his first opera, Sárka, he immersed himselt in collecting and studying Moravian folk music, which bore fruit in a series of orchestral suites and dances and in a one-act opera, The Beginning of a Romance. This was favourably received in 1894, but Janacek withdrew it after six performances and set to work on Jenufa.

Biography
Leos Janacek
Composer Czech Republic Born 3 Jul 1854
Died 12 Aug 1928
Born in Hukvaldy in the Hapsburg-dominated Austro-Hungarian empire, Leos Janacek sought inspiration from the music of his native Moravia, with whose nationalist aspirations he was totally in sympathy. Janacek was something of a late developer. All of his major works were composed after the age of 40, but he was so full of ideas that he was composing right up to his death.
Janacek came from a musical family: both his father and grandfather had been music teachers. Leos was expected to follow in this tradition and was sent to the Moravian capital, Brno, at the age of 11 to be a chorister in the monastery school. In 1873, having progressed as a teacher and conductor, he founded a choral society in the town. After a year at the Prague Organ School, he resumed this work, returning to Prague in 1877 where he met the composer Dvorak, with whom he went on a walking tour. Attracting attention as a musician of talent, he was given leave in 1879 to spend six months at each of the Conservatoires in Leipzig and Vienna. In 1881, aged 24, he married his 15-year-old former pupil, Zdenka Schulzova, but their marriage cooled after the birth of their daughter, Olga, in 1882. In 1881, he founded and was made Director of the Brno Organ School. Janacek created his first opera, 'Sarka', to celebrate the opening of the new theatre in Brno in 1884: however, this could not be performed as he had not sought permission to use the libretto. In the following years, he continued composing, conducting, and researching Moravian folk music and writing in a local musical journal.
