November 16, 1999 The Lark Quartet plays Aaron Jay Kernis. String Quartet No. 1 ("musica celestis"); String Quartet No. 2 ("musica instrumentalis"). Performed by The Lark Quartet. (Arabesque Recordings, CD # Z6727) 1999. American composer Aaron Jay Kernis is something of a musical prodigy. Born in Philadelphia in 1960, Kernis was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in music in 1998, one of the youngest composers ever to receive that award. After studying clarinet and violin, he taught himself piano and composition while in middle school, and at age fifteen he wrote his "first really big piece." He studied at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the Manhattan School of Music, and Yale School of Music, and had his first published orchestral work, Dream of the Morning Sky, premiered in 1983 by the New York Philharmonic under Zubin Mehta. Kernis draws inspiration for his work from many sources. He says that the String Quartet No. 2, the work for which he was awarded the Pulitzer, is "a piece very much influenced by dance and dance music," particularly baroque dance music. He says that he plays a bit of J.S. Bach's music every day on his piano, and the flavor of those works shows up in this quartet. Kernis' work, particularly his small-scale works such as these quartets, has been characterized as being marked by "engaging wit and expressive lyricism." Kernis has stated that among his objectives in his compositions are "to bring beauty back into music" and also to express an "exuberance and energy" in his work. He says that "there was a lot of fearsome music in this century" that created a barrier between contemporary composers and their audiences, and caused many listeners to retreat to the comfort of Mozart and Beethoven rather than struggle with the challenges of the new music. Kernis wants to break down that barrier and use his music to communicate with audiences, and in these two works he is largely successful.

Yesterday, I heard this work for the first time and was greatly moved by it. While I very rarely do this, I felt compelled to listen to it again today. I guess critical mass was achieved the second time, because on the second hearing I was totally and completely emotionally blown away by this work, as much if not more so than any work of music I have ever heard! It's my custom to not read the cover notes of a CD until after I have formed some initial impression of a work. Like the Rouse Symphony No. 2, which I recently commented on, it was clear that this work was dealing some very deep, and at times tragic, painful issues. There is also a section of exquisite beauty. Certainly, this work seemes to have been inspired by something that greatly moved the composer. The Rouse was in part an attempt to dealt with the death of a friend and colleague. The first movement of "Colored Field" is directly inspired by the memory of the systematic extermination of millions. Kernis visited Auschwitz and Birkenau in 1989. While there he saw "children chewing on a blades of grass", which led to the realization "that the ground from which they sprang [the grass] was once blood soaked: an outlandish combination of regenerative innocence and latent evil".

    MUSIC 2000
    Aaron J. Kernis
One of the youngest composers ever to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, is among the most esteemed musical figures of his generation. Each work of Kernis bears the unmistakable stamp of a wildly fertile imagination forged out of the wide-ranging musical languages of the 1980s and 1990s. His music bursts with rich poetic imagery, brilliant instrumental color, distinctive wit, and infectious exuberance. His work might be inspired by the horrors of the Persian Gulf War (as in the much-talked about Symphony No.2) the love poems of Anna Swir (Love Scenes), the earthy rhythms of Salsa (100 Greatest Dance Hits), the antics of a child (Before Sleep and Dreams), complexities and high-craftsmanship of Italian mosaics (Invisible Mosaic III ).
Mr. Kernis helps usher in the next century with a momentous choral symphony for the Millennium commissioned by Disney . Other upcoming commissions include works for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center the Minnesota Orchestra, and a song cycle for Renee Fleming in two versions one for voice and piano to be premiered on Lincoln Center Great Performers Series and the other with orchestra to be premiered with the Minnesota Orchestra. Mr. Kernis's music is published exclusively by Associated Music Publishers.
Mr. Kernis is one of the most honored young American composers. In addition to the 1998 Pulitzer Prize for his String Quartet No. 2 (musica instrumentalis), his many awards have included the Stoeger Prize from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, a Guggenheim Fellowship, the Rome Prize, an NEA grant, a Bearns Prize, a New York Foundation for the Arts Award, and three BMI Student Composer Awards. He has become an especially familiar and much-admired presence in Minnesota Twin Cities; in September 1993, he was appointed Composer-in-Residence for the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, Minnesota Public Radio, and the American Composers Forum, and he returned in the fall of 1998 as New Music Advisor to the Minnesota Orchestra.

Five recipients of U of L's 2002 Grawemeyer Awards have been announced. Awards were given to Aaron Jay Kernis, music composition; Martha Nussbaum, education; James McClelland and David Rumelhart, psychology; and Miroslav Volf, religion. The Grawemeyer Award was established by the late Charles Grawemeyer, an industrialist, entrepreneur and U of L graduate who had a lifelong passion for music, education and religious studies. Rather than rewarding personal achievements, he chose to recognize powerful ideas or creative works in the arts and sciences. The Grawemeyer Foundation awards $1 million each year, $200,000 each for works in music composition, education, ideas improving world order, religion and psychology. The Louisville Grawemeyer Award in Religion is given jointly by U of L and the Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary . No award was given this year for ideas improving world order. Music Composition Aaron Jay Kernis One of America's most honored young composers, Aaron Jay Kernis, has won the world's top international music composition prize, the 2002 U of L Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. Three outstanding American composers are writing full-scale operas for The Santa Fe Opera . The first, Madame Mao by Chinese-American Bright Sheng, is scheduled for performance in the 2003 season. Citing the company’s long standing commitment to new works, Mr. Gaddes revealed that Theodore Shapiro will undertake a major work for the 2004 season and Aaron Jay Kernis in 2006, the company’s fiftieth anniversary season. "Beginning with our very first commission in 1957 (The Tower by Marvin David Levy ), The Santa Fe Opera, under the leadership of founder John Crosby, has become widely known for its support of composers and the performance of their works," commented Mr. Gaddes. "Some of the most important names in composition received early visibility in Santa Fe Carlisle Floyd, Peter Lieberson, Tobias Picker, Hans Werner Henze, to name just a few. The presentation of new works has been a hallmark of The Santa Fe Opera, and one that we plan to continue vigorously. We hope to present works that will enter the standard repertory, as a result of their musical excellence, their compelling subjects and the artistic standards achieved in their premieres," he said. Bright Sheng, winner of a 2001 MacArthur Foundation "Genius Award," is 46. Born in China, Mr. Sheng’s life was affected by the Cultural Revolution and his music is very much an expression of his life and experiences in China. Educated at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music where he earned his undergraduate degree, Mr. Sheng came to this country in 1982. He was composer in residence at the
