Making Time
A music column by Don Mager Kernis, Aaron Jay. Second Symphony. Musica Celestis. Invisible Mosaic III.
City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Hugh Wolff. London: Argo Kernis's Second Symphony is a war symphony in the grand tradition of Barber, Tubin and Shostakovich , reaching even further back to Vaughn Williams and Nielsen. Through the lens of Shostakovich it also has references to Mahler particularly in its two slow movements. It is a large, by not long, three movement work, with the movements entitled I. Alarm, II. Air/Ground, III. Barricade But, Second Symphony The second and third movements are large slow panoramas, the longest is the middle one at 12 minutes. As its string textures unfold we feel that Kernis is evoking the Mahlerian Adagio, the vast essay in aching sadness, climaxing at some mid-point of excruciating dissonance, only to achieve a kind of transcendent or mystical resignation. But Kernis propels the story elsewhere and the Mahlerian solution is eschewed completely. Indeed, we move to an excruciating mid-point, but from it, we are carried even more deeply into the near despair of the movement's initial mood. Nothing is transcended, no higher grace is proffered. Kernis compels our listening minds to confront bleakly but unflinchingly the horrors of one of our civilization's determining recent historical momentsshorn of hype and simplistic morality play and patriotism. The third movement initially seems to offer a respite, a slightly lighter texture, pace and instrumental configuration. It too, however, mounts towards a devastating moment of terror and like the longer second movement searches beyond its despair to find only the consolation of having endured. The entire work ends with a hushed and very unsettling dissipation of energy. In a concert hall, I personally, would find it very difficult to bring myself right away to applaud, for reflective silence seems to be demanded by the symphony's entire architecture. Idiomatically, Kernis is well inside the symphonic tradition of the twentieth century; he breaks no syntactic, structural, timbreal nor harmonic grounds, even somewhat conservative in approach; but inside his chosen sound universe, he thinks fresh musical ideas and communicates them consummately in a work of only 27 minutes.

Why star performers want new compositions from Aaron Jay Kernis
By Joshua Kosman If there is any aspect of human existence that hasn’t shown up in Aaron Jay Kernis’ music, it’s only because he hasn’t gotten around to it yet. Which would be understandable, because the 39-year-old composer is one very busy guy. Commissions fly thick and fast into his mailbox, from orchestras, soloists, and even the Walt Disney Corporation. There are revisions to make, proofs to check, rehearsals to drop in on, musicians to consult with, scores to look at in his new capacity as new-music advisor to the Minnesota Orchestra. And amid all this, Kernis is patiently building a body of work that is one of the most diverse and magnificent on the contemporary scene. "For me," he says with the thoughtful, slightly self-conscious air of someone delivering an artistic credo, "the basic source from which all my work flows is a belief in the inexhaustible number of things music can do—its ability to spring from the inexhaustibility of the thoughts and emotions of human beings." A tall order, no doubt—yet one of the striking things about Kernis’ music is how much of the human condition it manages to pack in. Caught in different aspects, his music is funny and sorrowful, diffident and self-righteous, intricately learned and plain-spoken, lyrical and pugnacious, and very, very beautiful. No less various is the range of genres to which he’s put his mind, from symphonies, string quartets, and concertos to choral and chamber music and songs (there’s even an opera in the early planning stages, although Kernis is resolutely tight-lipped about the details).

What recordings do you buy and why? What recordings have you listened to recently? Robert Hurwitz
President, Nonesuch Records I buy records for at least five reasons: professionally (I want to hear people I haven't heard before, or I want to hear recordings that people I trust are talking about); I buy them for my children (records they want and records I think they might like); I buy them to hear musician friends when they forget to send me a copy of their latest album;  I buy records that I simply want to hear because I still love listening to music; and I buy CDs of LPs I haven't replaced (because I don't listen to my old LPs, so unless I replace them, those discs are lost forever).

NewMusicBox is terrific, but I confess that what I'm listening to right now doesn't really qualify as new American music: both CDs available of Dulce Pontes , entitled Caminhos and Lagrimas , and both extraordinarily beautiful.  American audiences may only be familiar with her work from the film "Primal Fear" (Ed Norton, Richard Gere, et al.), where one cut was featured.  She recently is also featured on one cut on a CD with Andrea Bocelli, one of the many current darlings of the opera world, but it's too much Bocelli and not enough Pontes.  She's a long-standing and very much revered artist in Lisbon, and for good reason.  Both CDs are available but not easy to find: Eur/Portugal #850101 for "Caminhos" and Eur/Portugal #3003 for "Lagrimas."

SAN FRANCISCO - 23 July 1999
Pulitzer winning composer Aaron Jay Kernis
An accomplished musician and composer, Kernis is one of the youngest recipients of the coveted Pulitzer. His distinctive compositions run the gamut of creative style and are rich in poetic imagery, brilliant instrumental color, distinctive musical wit, and infectious exuberance. Kernis has written for many of America's foremost musical institutions including the New York Philharmonic, American Public Radio, and the San Francisco Symphony. Mr. Kernis has recently completed a momentous choral symphony for the Millennium commissioned by the Disney Company. Currently, Mr. Kernis is New Music Advisor to the Minnesota Orchestra. "I've deliberately stayed away from notation software in the past," explains Kernis. "Traditionally they have been too time consuming and difficult to work with. But when I saw Sibelius for Windows I was pleasantly surprised. It is a wonderful tool - extremely easy to learn and the program is very intuitive. Sibelius also has the features that I need and feels very natural to work with. I'm sure I'll be using it for years to come." Sibelius for Windows handles music of all kinds and complexities, from keyboard and vocal music to complex orchestral scores with over 100 instruments. Offering full Internet compatibility, playback feature options and publishing quality printing, Sibelius for Windows is the most comprehensive composition tool available.

A composer of grand gestures
NEW YORK - Philadelphia-born Aaron Jay Kernis is America's most honored younger composer. Last November he received the world's top international music composition prize, the University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award, worth $200,000 and previously given to such famous composers as Toru Takemitsu and Gyorgy Ligeti. Last month, Kernis's specially commissioned piece "Color Wheel" was performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra at the opening of the new Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts. Just three years ago, Kernis became one of the youngest-ever Pulitzer prize winners for his Second String Quartet. He's currently laboring on a new opera commissioned by the Santa Fe Opera, due in 2006. What is the secret of his remarkably quick career rise? Kernis's music is varied, ambitious, and enjoyable to listen to. His "Air," originally written for violin and piano, has an 18th-century pastoral grace. His Pulitzer prize-winning Second String Quartet opens with a celebratory dance that's an Aaron Copland-style hoedown, as if emphatically rediscovering joy in music. New York Philharmonic principal cellist Carter Brey, who has often played Kernis's works, says his music can range from the portentous to the ironic. "I like his scope, and the fact that he's not afraid to take chances in tackling huge issues," Mr. Brey says. "He's capable of irony and wit, but won't take cover behind those qualities. There's a lot of passion to his writing, and what ties his disparate pieces together are the grand gestures, the way he'll go for a big romantic statement."
