Drei Schwestern
Besetzung
Ligeti’s Early Compositional Development Ligeti’s synthesis of minimalist and “avant-garde” styles did not begin immediately. His first music was very strongly influenced by Bartók, mainly because he was working under the restrictive Hungarian communist government, which suppressed most music of later styles than Bartók’s. However, after secretly listening to German and Austrian radio broadcasts, he became very interested in the serialist developments from the West. “I had this period in 1955-6 when I wrote twelve-tone music, because, you know, this was the most ‘modern’ style, and it was part of liberating myself from Bartók.” (Griffiths, 22) In November 1956, he was able to escape to Vienna, and immerse himself more in this avant-garde system than before. He quickly ingratiated himself with the avant-garde composers of the day, writing an analysis of Boulez’ Structures, working with them in the electronic music studios in Cologne, and soon giving lectures at the Darmstadt Ferienkurse.
“Although the Trois bagatelles are obviously comic in intention, the same cannot be said of the minimal events of Apparitions and Atmosphères, or of the final notated silences in other scores. Or at least, the ‘serious’ aspect of these works is so engrossing that the comic becomes uninteresting. The case of the Poème symphonique [from 1962] is a little more equivocal. Clearly the idea of a piece for a hundred metronomes is one that could occur only to a composer with an abundant sense of humour or none at all, and there is no doubt that Ligeti’s taste for comedy is intensely alert. At the same time, this curious ensemble provides the neatest resource for erecting complex layers of different metrical tickings, as Ligeti had wanted in [other pieces]. It is a kind of crazy mechanical music that has returned too in many later pieces.” (Griffiths, 42)

Lukas Foss is a unique figure in American music, holding an extraordinary legacy as conductor, composer, pianist and pedagogue.
As one of the country's leading and most respected composers, Foss has over 120 compositions of all genres to his credit. At age 23, he was the youngest composer to be awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship; he has since received numerous commissions, awards and honors for his works, many of which have been played throughout the United States and Europe by world-renowned artists and ensembles. Recognized as a major contributor to American music, he has been elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 1995 the New York Philharmonic saluted Foss by dedicating an entire week of concerts to his works.
Foss graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied conducting, composition and piano. He went on to study with Koussevitzky at the Berkshire Music Center at Tanglewood and Hindemith at Yale.
A recipient of 15 honorary doctorates, Foss has held the position of composer-in-residence at Harvard University, Carnegie Mellon University, Yale University, Manhattan School of Music, UCLA, the Tanglewood Institute and Boston University, where he has been professor of music since 1991.

Just when this process of recuperation might have led him, in the early 1980s, to join the newly dominant trend of returning to more traditional musical material, he found further stimulation and contradiction in non-European musical cultures, especially Caribbean, central African and East Asian. Always paradoxical, he found that this music of the world enhanced his sense of himself as musically a Hungarian, and began to publish or republish many of the compositions he had written decades earlier.

HUNGARY IN FOCUS at Blackheath Halls 5-12 July 2002
AMADINDA Percussion Festival 1988
, the first European percussion festival ever, and a revelation that a whole series of concerts devoted entirely to percussion could be completely satisfying. That memory (Kroumata from Sweden and some amazing Americans took part too) is one of the most vivid in my musical experiences over many decades and I have acquired most of Amadinda's CDs. Now percussion festivals are everywhere, and the high virtuosity of leading percussionists is in danger of being taken for granted. Amadinda was reviewed in the Huddersfield Festival 2000 in a very similar programme to that at Blackheath:
- - Huddersfield's day of percussion ended spectacularly, with a return visit after 11 years by the Amadinda Percussion Group , bringing from Budapest a lorry-load (or two?) of bizarre and exotic instruments they had accumulated in the meantime. Their three hour programme began with a marimba piece for the four players by Lukas Ligeti (son of Gyorgy), included three of the pioneering works of the early '40s by
