Guillaume de Machaut was a French poet and the most accomplished and versatile composer of the 14th century. A member of the household of King John of Bohemia from 1323, Machaut later became a canon of Reims, where he resided from 1340 until his death. As a young man he accompanied the king on military expeditions and developed a distinct fondness for falconry, horseback riding, and adventure. The richness and diversity of his experiences served him in good stead when he wrote his numerous and expansive collections of poetry, many of which were graced with musical compositions. His later patrons included the king's daughter, Bonne of Luxembourg, Charles of Navarre, and King Charles V of France. Several of the richly illuminated manuscripts of his works were prepared under his close supervision for the benefit of noble and royal protectors.
Machaut's short, gemlike lyrics helped establish the rondeaux, ballade, and virelai, poetic forms that prevailed for more than a century. Nearly all the virelais he set to music are monophonic (set to a single line of melody). His graceful polyphonic (multivoice) ballades and rondeaux also set European secular song style for the next century: a high, sung melody accompanied by two lower instrumental parts. Of his 23 motets, 6 are to liturgical Latin texts and 17 to secular French texts. They are in three parts, with complex rhythmic and interwoven melody textures. Structurally, they are isorhythmic, or based on long underlying melodic and rhythmic cycles. His four-part

Guillaume de Machaut (d.1377) is one of the undisputed pinnacle geniuses of Western music, and the most famous composer of the Middle Ages. Today his four-voice Mass of Notre Dame . The remainder of the fourteenth century was an epic of wars and plagues, and one of the few periods in which the population of Europe declined, but Machaut's reputation continued to rise. He went on to serve two kings of France, and was charged with a task as important as accompanying hostages during the English war. In 1361 the Dauphine was received in Machaut's quarters, an exceptional event. By the 1370s Machaut's name was associated with Pierre de Lusignan, King of Cyprus, thus establishing his fame nearly as far as Asia. Machaut is frequently portrayed today as an avant garde virelais and especially the lengthy lais . He also acted decisively to refine the emerging polyphonic song forms ballade rondeau , and these were to become the dominant fixed forms for the following generations. What Machaut achieved so eloquently is an idiomatic and natural combination of words with music, forcefully compelling in its lyrical grace and rhythmic sophistication. His songs are immediately enjoyable, because he was able to shape the smallest melodic nuances as well as to conceive of forms on a large scale. The latter is reflected in his poetic-musical creations and Le Veoir Dit , as well as in his Messe de Notre Dame . One must not lose sight of Machaut's position within the sweep of medieval history, as his great "multimedia" productions had clear precedents in the

Guillaume de Machaut
(c.1300-1377)
We have no precise knowledge of Guillaume de Machaut's early years. He was probably born around 1300 in the diocese of Rheims in Champagne and he may have spent some time studying in Paris where, since the 13th century, the most sophisticated musical theories had been elaborated. A papal bull of Benedict XII dated 1335 states that for about twelve years Guillaume had been the almoner ( clericus elimosinarius ), secretary and familiar of John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia whom he accompanied on his expeditions throughout Europe. This great feudal lord, King of Bohemia and stalwart and inalienable ally of the royal house of France, travelled the length and breadth of Europe in pursuit of his various military and political campaigns, and his secretary followed faithfully at his side throughout these often turbulent peregrinations. Dit de la Harpe, 255-256), Machaut composed all abundance of poems. The future king Charles V even paid him a visit at home in 1361. Near the end of his life, his output was copied, at the request of his illustrious patrons and admirers, into a set of manuscripts beautifully written in calligraphic script and richly illuminated. The author himself seems to have supervised their preparation and production, since all the pieces are meticulously ordered: the narrative poems or dits, which are purely literary, come before the compositions in Lyric style and the sacred works (the Mass and Latin motets). Only a part of the writings in lyric style (consisting of lais, ballades, rondeaux, virelais, as they are ordered in the manuscripts) is set to music. In Machaut's case, the poet ultimately takes precedence over the musician.

Guillaume de Machaut
c. 1160-1225
Probably born in Rheims, Machaut was the leading exponent of the Ars Nova movement that flourished in France during the fourteenth century. In 1323 he joined the royal household of John of Lux embourg, King of Bohemia, and served as a clerk for about 20 years, widely respected as a poet as well as a composer. He travelled with the court, but increasingly spent his time composing rather than in administration. His first verified composition was a motet written in 1324 for the election of the Archbishop of Rheims. Through the efforts of King John, Machaut was granted several benefices, in particular the canonry of the new Gothic cathedral in Rheims, granted in 1337. He took up residency there in 1340, leaving his formal work with the king though remaining in service until the monarch's death at the battle of Crecy in 1346. Machaut was one of the earliest known users of syncopated rhythm, and was at the forefront of rhythmic experimentation in both his religious and his secular music. His Hoquetus David is one of the first pieces of purely instrumental music in modern Western times. In addition, he composed for voices in a wider vocal range than was previously thought possible. In all he wrote more than 140 (mainly polyphonic) compositions, although fewer than two dozen have been found outside his own collections, suggesting that he protected his work fiercely. After the outbreak

GUILLAUME DE MACHAUT Born: c. 1300, Rheims?
Died: ?April 13, 1377, Rheims
French poet and musician. Composer of monophonic and polyphonic music. Leading representative of the Ars nova tradition.
The fourteenth century was, as the historian Barbara Tuchman notes, a calamitous century. Europe was ravaged by plague, which killed up to one-third of the population in a three-year period. France and England embarked on the disastrous Hundred Years' War (1328–1450) which inflicted great misery on the French people. On top of this, political conflicts resulted first in the relocation of the papacy from Rome to Avignon in southern France (1309) and ultimately in the election of competing popes (at one point, numbering three) resulting in the Great Schism (1378–1417). Ironically, this was also a time of great achievement in music. A new class of highly trained composers continued the polyphonic traditions of the previous century and added new approaches to rhythm and structure. Among these composers of the so-called Ars nova (literally "new art") was Guillaume de Machaut.
Machaut lived his life in the higher ranks of service, first as secretary to John of Luxembourg, King of Bohemia, and then as a canon (a church official) at the Cathedral of Rheims. Like many in the fourteenth century, Machaut's life and works reflect an equal measure of the sacred and secular. Most of his works were either secular (such as his many chansons) or a mix of sacred and ceremonial (including many of his motets and his hocket "David," which was probably written for the coronation service of King Charles V in 1364). At the same time, he wrote what is probably the first full setting of the Mass Ordinary by a single composer (the

Guillaume de Machaut By Dena Guillaume de Machuat, a medieval composer of the fourteen century, was born in 1300, in Rheims, France. He wrote more songs than any composer of his time. Some of his most famous works are the Mass of Notre Dame, Remede de Fortune, a long narrative poem, and Ma Finest Mon Commencement, in which the text provide a key to a cannon. Thought to be educated in Rheims, he became a royal secretary to John Luxembourg, king of Bohemia, in 1323. He continued in this service until the king died in 1346. Machaut then served various members of the French high nobility for many years. In his later life his time was dedicated to organizing his works. With his output of motets (unaccompanied sacred songs) and other works, Machuat was the most important figure of the Ars Nova. The Ars Nova is when composers created music of increased rhythmic complexity. Machautâs work the Mass of Notre Dame, is very complex and fancy, unusual for church music at that time. For some time it was believed to have been composed for the coronation of king Charles V in 1364, but that is now doubtful. Even so it is known that Charles V was a great admirer of Machaut and even went to visit him in his own home! Knowing this, it is most likely that Machaut wrote music for him. In 1377, thirteen years after writing the Mass of Notre Dame, Machaut died in Rheims, France, at the age of 77. Return to Fall 1998 Dead Composer Reports Home

Machaut, Guillaume de (c. 1300 - 1377)
Guillaume de Machaut, a leading French composer and poet of the 14th century, was born in Rheims, were he spent the greater part of his life, after earlier employment in the service of John of Luxemburg, King of Bohemia. He was employed subsequently by various members of the nobility, including the future Charles V of France. He held various church benefices and as a musician was pre-eminent in the period in the history of music known as the Ars nova, when composers created music of increased rhythmic complexity. Church Music Machaut's best known composition is his Messe de Notre Dame, Mass of Our Lady, an early example of a cyclic setting of the liturgical text, in which the sections are musically related. His Hoquetus David makes similar use of the technique of isorhythm, in which a given basic sequence of notes, derived normally from plainchant, is divided into a repeated rhythmic pattern. The hocket referred to in the title is a musical hiccough, a popular technical device of the time, in which the musical line is interrupted by sudden rests. Major Works:

Machaut's Messe de Notre Dame is the earliest known polyphonic setting of the Catholic mass.
Other Information:
Machaut was probably born in Machaut, a town in the Champagne region of France. He died in Rheims. Machaut was a musician, poet, and an educated priest. He worked and traveled in a variety of capacities for King John of Bohemia. He also worked in the court of Charles V of France. He was canon of Reims from 1337 until his death in April of 1377. He is regarded as the most prominent composer of the 14th century and is the composer of earliest existing polyphonic setting of the Catholic mass (by a single composer) and many other works, sacred and secular. Most of his 23 motets were in the traditional form using a cantus firmus tenor accompanied by upper voices with different texts. Motets of this time were getting longer, more secular, and more rhythmically complex. Machaut's motets use the techniques of isorhythm and hocket. He also composed polyphonic virelais (Abba), rondeaux (ABaAabAB), and ballades (aabC). These were known as the formes fixes and were composed in a style anticipating the Ars Nova.
