QUESTIONS PUT BY THE DELEGATION AND STALIN'S ANSWERS
Question: What new principles have Lenin and the Communist Party added to Marxism in practice? Would it be correct to say that Lenin believed in "constructive revolution" whereas Marx was more inclined to wait for the culmination of the development of economic forces? Answer: I think that Lenin "added" no "new principles" to Marxism nor did he abolish any of the "old" principles of Marxism. Lenin was, and remains, the most loyal and consistent pupil of Marx and Engels, and he wholly and entirely based himself on the principles of Marxism. But Lenin did not merely carry out the doctrines of Marx and Engels. He was also the continuator of these doctrines. What does that mean? It means that he developed the doctrines of Marx and Engels still further in application to the new conditions of development, to the new phase of capitalism, to imperialism. This means that in developing the doctrines of Marx under the new conditions of the class struggle, Lenin contributed something new to the general treasury of Marxism as compared with what was contributed by Marx and Engels, with what could be contributed in the pre-imperialist period of capitalism; but Lenin's new contribution to the treasury of Marxism is wholly and entirely based on the principles laid down by Marx and Engels.

Joseph Alois Schumpeter (1883-1950)
"Can capitalism survive? No. I do not think it can." Thus opens Schumpeter's prologue to a section of his 1942 book, Capitalism, Socialism and Democracy. One might think, on the basis of the quote, that Schumpeter was a Marxist. But the analysis that led Schumpeter to his conclusion differed totally from Karl Marx's. Marx believed that capitalism would be destroyed by its enemies (the proletariat), whom capitalism had purportedly exploited. Marx relished the prospect. Schumpeter believed that capitalism would be destroyed by its successes. Capitalism would spawn, he believed, a large intellectual class that made its living by attacking the very bourgeois system of private property and freedom so necessary for the intellectual class's existence. And unlike Marx, Schumpeter did not relish the destruction of capitalism. He wrote: "If a doctor predicts that his patient will die presently, this does not mean that he desires it." Communism Student Activites on the Internet The students will search the internet for information on Orwell's life and the people, ideas, and events of the Russian Revolution from 1917 to 1943.
Orwell's Allegorical Animals Animal Farm is an allegory, a story in which the characters and events represent real-life people, ideas, or historical events. Many of the novel's characters and "happenings" on the farm have direct parallels with the Russian Revolution and the years following from 1917 to 1943. Orwell uses his farm animals as characters to create humor that turns on human weaknesses. Orwell satirizes twentieth-century Soviet totalitarianism to show that, contrary to the nineteenth-century belief in the perfectibility of humanity, utopia is impossible.
Researching Orwell's Allegories in Animal Farm
  • To keep track of the allegories in Animal Farm and the meanings associated with them, create three columns on a sheet of paper (or, print my Allegory Handout ). The titles for each column are: "Referent in Russian History", "Allegory", and "Notes". The first column will contain people, ideas, or historical events from Russia's history. The second column will contain the names of characters or things from the novel (see #4). The third column will be used for personal notes or definitions (for a group presentation) on the Russian references.

    Karl Marx An Essay
    I. His position, indeed, cannot be appreciated unless it is seen in its historical perspective. Born between too revolutions, he utilized the method produced by the reaction from the excesses of France to the service of its fundamental principles. The disciple of Hegel, he was the first of those who felt his master's influence to apply his dialectic to the analysis of social facts. Hardly less important was the material of which he made use. Beginning to write when the full implications of capitalism were becoming visible, he utilized its own description of its economic consequences as the proof of its moral inadequacy. The evidence was impressive and complete; and the induction therefrom of a social order at once new and inevitable, suited to a nicety the yearnings of his generation.

    Pastorale (1914)
