of wood and used by the elder men to sit on. The Masai are not hunters of big game except lions, but they eat the eland and kudu. The domestic animals are cattle, sheep, goats, donkeys and dogs. Only women and the married men smoke. The dead are ordinarily not buried, but the bodies are carried a short distance from the village and left on the ground to be devoured by hyenas, jackals and vultures, Important chiefs are buried, however, and a year later the eldest son or successor recovers the skull, which is treasured as a charm. The medicine men of Masal are often the chiefs, and the supreme chief is almost always a medicine man. The Masai believe in a nature-god as a supreme being—Ngai (‘ sky “)—and his aid is invoked in cases of drought by a ceremonial chant of the children, standing in a circle after sunset, each with a bunch of grass in its hand. They have creation-myths involving four gods, the black, white, grey and red deities. They believe there is no future for women or common people, but that such distinction is reserved for chiefs. Pythons and a species of snake are revered as the reincarnated forms of their more celebrated ancestors. A kind of worship is paid to the hyena in some districts: See A. C. Hollis, The Masai, their Language and Folklore (1905’);

He was born in Livorno in 1863, he was the son of a baker, he studied in Livorno, and after together with Ponchielli he studied in Milan at the conservatory. He couldn't bear the strict rules of this school so he left Milan and started working as orchestra conductor. He settled in Cerignola as local theatre director and conductor of the local band. The extraordinary success of his opera "Cavalleria Rusticana" (1890) prevented him to finish his work at Cerignola. MIDI FILE - from "Cavalleria rusticana": Preludio He could dedicate himself completely to music composition and to conduct his orchestra.
Many critics said that in every Mascagni's opera, there's a high inspiration nobility, lively expression, and a very good style. Mascagni music had a different style for each opera a beautiful expressive language and original harmonic elaboration, rich of strange limits. That drammatic character is typical of Mascagni and it had an irresistibile charme but the past generation couldn't appreciate his music complely. Pietro Mascagni Operas

Map of Sicily

Of all the great works in the grand tradition of Italian opera, probably none is more beloved than the famous Cavalleria Rusticana (literally "Rustic Chivalry") by Pietro Mascagni. A musical melodrama of pride, passion and pathos sometimes equalled but never surpassed, it is unlike most other masterpieces of its genre. Unlike the settings of other grand examples of classical lyric opera, the location of the original story is not Paris, nor Rome nor Pharoanic Egypt but a small, nearly-forgotten mountain village on the island of Sicily that, were it not for this musical tragedy, would have been forgotten altogether. The town is Vizzini, in the province of Catania, and the author of the original story was its most famous native son, Giovanni Verga. To reach a more profound understanding of this great Sicilian writer of the realist school, and the people he wrote about, one must have at least an introductory view of his roots and home. Historically, the town can be traced back to the time of Cicero and Pliny as "Bidis Oppidum." The Syracusean village had prehistoric roots and was successively settled by the ancient Siculi, Greeks and then the Romans. The Arabs and Normans also left their traces, and when King William II of Sicily married Joan Plantagenet of England the town's Count Robert "de Bizini" represented the territory as an invited guest at the wedding.

Biography
Pietro Mascagni
Composer Italy Born 7 Dec 1863
Died 2 Aug 1945
Mascagni was born in Livorno and studied in Milan, and then became a conductor of touring operetta companies. He became famous when his one-act opera, 'Cavalleria rusticana', which he submitted to a competition organized by the publisher Sonzogno, was awarded first prize and was performed to wildly enthusiastic audiences in Rome in 1890. 'Cavalleria rusticana' was produced by opera houses all over the world, and is still one of the most popular works in the international repertory.
'Guglielmo Ratcliff', composed before 'Cavalleria rusticana', was not staged until 1895. By then 'L'amico Fritz', which Mascagni composed immediately after 'Cavalleria rusticana', had been performed (Rome, 1891) with only moderate success, and I Rantzau (Florence, 1892) had been a failure. None of Mascagni's later operas equalled the success 'Cavalleria rusticana' which can be said to have begun the fashion for verismo or realism Italian opera.
Iris (1898) was followed by 'Le maschere' which was produced simultaneously in six Italian cities in 1901, and hissed off the stage in most of them. 'II Piccolo Marat' (1921) recaptured some of the old excitement of the early days of verismo, but Mascagni's subsequent works were of little musical or dramatic interest. He became the official composer of the Fascist regime, and composed 'Nerone' (staged at La Scala, Milan, in 1935) as a tribute to Mussolini. He died in Rome.
