    Biography
    Olivier Messiaen
Composer France Born 10 Dec 1908
    Died 27 Apr 1992
'L'Ascension' ('The Ascension') of 1933 also began life as an orchestral work, but the following year Messiaen transcribed it for organ. In it, he developed the use of 'modes of limited transposition' (a phrase coined by him), a technique that was to remain with him. But he also employed tonality, atonality and serialism freely to create a very personal style.
On 3 Sep 1939 war broke out and Messiaen was conscripted into the French army. He was captured at Nancy, France, in 1940, trying to escape on a bicycle with no tyres, and spent the next two years as a prisoner of war in Stalag VIIIA at Gorlitz, Silesia.
All he had with him were the scores of JS Bach's 'Brandenburg' Concertos and of works by Beethoven, Ravel, Stravinsky and Berg. Other musicians in the camp had a violin, clarinet and cello. There was also a piano there. It was for these instruments that Messiaen composed the 'Quatour pour la fin du temps' in 1940. This was an important work for Messiaen because it was the first in which he made use of birdsong - a blackbird and a nightingale appear in the first movement - and rhythmic ideas were further explored. It was premiered in subzero temperatures to an audience of 5,000 grateful prisoners.
Two years later, the war came to an end. Messiaen was released and was appointed Professor of Harmony at the Paris Conservatoire. In 1966, he became Professor of Composition there.

Olivier Messiaen (1908-1992): As Cores do Belo

    * 10. Dez. 1908 in Avignon Der Komponist Olivier Messiaen wurde am 10. Dezember 1908 in Avignon geboren.
