Activities Grants via POFBA Contacts The Pauline Oliveros Foundation Bay Area (POFBA) is a program of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation . The purpose of POFBA is to provide a platform for supporting new work in the San Francisco Bay Area. POFBA wishes to provide a context for new work through community building. The formation of POFBA was announced by Pauline Oliveros on November 12, 2000, at the Oakland home of Wendy Burch. This culminated over three years of planning and organization. POFBA is the second regional program of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, after POF Houston.
Obtaining Grants via POFBA
Artists may make proposals to the POF Board of Directors. Proposals that are consistent and resonant with the POF mission are considered for sponsorship. With approval of the POF Board of Directors, artists may submit the proposals to granting organizations, using the tax exempt status of POF (a 510(c)(3) non-profit organization). This status allows access to a larger variety of grants, including funds that are restricted to California organizations. POF administers funds, and assists with the final reports, and charges an administrative fee of 5% of the project budget. Artists are responsible for all aspects of their projects.

There she attended San Francisco State College (1954-57), earning a bachelor of arts degree in 1957 with composition as major. She took a year of post-graduate work before deciding to quit the university because it interfered with composition. For the first time she came into contact with "new" music and the young adventurous musicians who were creating it. A six-year period of the study of composition privately with Robert Erickson followed. Erickson reinforced her interest in sound quality, encouraged her to improvise her way through composition rather than rationalize, and introduced her to the concept of organic rhythm, that is, rhythm that shifts, expands, contracts, and is not periodic in the metrical sense. In 1957, she joined several San Francisco avant-garde composers in creating group improvisations "We simply sat down and played together without prior discussion, recorded and listened to the results," she says. "At first we were amazed at the spontaneous organization in the music... We all felt our hearing expanded by the simple process of throwing oneself into spontaneous music making, getting immediate feedback in the form of the recording, and discussion of the process and results."

Pauline Oliveros is internationally acclaimed as a composer, accordionist, teacher and innovator of the technique called Deep Listening. "Deep Listening" unfolds through the interaction of the performers as they are influenced by special tunings and the space around them. In 1991, Oliveros was invited by Neely Bruce, director of American Voices, to conduct Deep Listening training sessions with them in the chapel of the Pomfret School in Connec-ticut. This chapel was specially chosen for the sessions because of its rich and reverberant acoustics. After two weekends of workshops, Oliveros and American Voices recorded several Deep Listening/Sonic Meditations in the Chapel. A special solo performance by Pauline Oliveros on her "just-intonation" accordion was titled St. George and the Dragon, an interaction with the the chapel's acoustics, which included a noisy squirrel who joined in! Oliveros is again featured on the accordion with American Voices for In Memoriam, Mr. Whitney, a moving meditation for those departed. A second disc from these sessions is in preparation for release on Mode Records.

    E-Mail Interview with Pauline Oliveros
Doktorski: Hi Pauline! Oliveros: Hi Henry! Doktorski: I thought your CD "Deep Listening" was tremendous; a really fabulous experience, actually. Oliveros: Glad you liked it! Doktorski: In your own words, how would you describe your style of music? Is it "New Age" music or something else? Oliveros: New Age is a marketing term which has lost it's meaning to the market. My music comes from an inner place - the style changes as I change. Sometimes it's raucous, sometimes it's quiet, it does not rely on imposed forms - it forms as I listen. Doktorski: It is extremely rare to hear contemporary composers play the accordion as a principal instrument. Even if a composer began learning music on the accordion, it seems that all of them later switched to the piano as their instrument of choice. You, however, seem to have stayed with the accordion. Why? Oliveros: The accordion is my primary instrument. It's an old friend - comfortable and expressive. Symbolically it is aligned with *the people* - working people. It is also a challenge to play an instrument that grew up after the period of classical music. The piano is centered in that period. The accordion has a life of it's own.

My mind was mesmerized and my attention focused only on one thing: the undulating aural vibrati ons which radiated peace, joy and a cosmic timelessness. Within a few minutes, I put on my Sony headphones in order to mask outside distractions, lay down on the sofa, closed my eyes and entered another universe. After an hour or so, when the album was finished and my journey completed, I lay there for some time tasting the silence, until finally an unexpected and unwanted phone call jarred me from my meditative reverie and brought me cruelly back to the material world.

    http://www.radiantslab.com/jdk/jdk003_info.html
HOMEPAGE Live at the Ijsbreker, Jan. 1999 CONCERT-TEXT Pauline Oliveros In 1952, Ms. Oliveros encountered composer Robert Erickson (1917-1997) in San Francisco and she studied with him for six years. Mr. Erickson, a composer whose beautiful music makes a lasting 'Deep Listening' impression, never has made any stride in Europe other than as the vital stimulus for such outspoken West Coast mavericks as Terry Riley, Morton Subotnick and, of course, Ms. Oliveros. The enormous potential of her solo-instrument, the accordion, inspires Ms. Oliveros to focus continuously on 'in depth listening.' Linked to electronic tools, the instrument becomes in her hands an abundant source of refined sounds for her own music. Her instrument, build in 1983 by her former teacher, Willard Palmer, has a row of pedal tones, ranging from E to c#. Since 1986 it is tuned in just intonation. The accordion and the way Ms. Oliveros plays it, make the instrument ideal for turning her ideas on breathing, listening and meditating into sound. And those ideas are most effective when the sensuality of her music needs to be heightened. In 1983, the 'bith year' of her own instrument, she also added a piece of electronics to her equipment which gives the music an intensifying harmony by way of highly refined echo effects. These effects are not superficial. They don't make the sound spacious but are an integral part of the music's structure. They affect the tiniest pitch changes, help produce sound layers, and create harmonic modulations.
