Official Statement by IAWM Advisor, Pauline Oliveros as published in the February, 1997 issue of the IAWM Journal , p. 23.

Unethical Exclusion
Many friends have released statements expressing solidarity with the VPO Protests. IAWM Advisor Pauline Oliveros' statement appears below:
The unethical exclusion by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra of women and people of color is insupportable. The protest against this exclusion led by the International Alliance for Women in Music is a necessary step in changing such conditions in the performing musical arts. Great performers are obviously present in either gender and all colors and they can be players of any instrument.
In the light of this protest against the racist and sexist policy of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, all who perform, compose, educate, publish and produce music also need to think again about what music is presented and taught. Who composed the music? How does one come to like music of any kind? How are opinions about music formed? What music is available in libraries for study and performance?
Including women and people of color in all forms of musical activity is an ethical and conscious choice to be made by all concerned. It is particularly incumbent on established musical organizations such as the Vienna Philharmonic, other established orchestras and institutions of higher education throughout the world to awaken to the effort of inclusiveness. This calls out for a reorganization of musical repertoire and more opportunities for composers to create new repertoire and for performers to play it and teach it. Once performers are integrated into musical ensembles which formerly excluded women and people of color what music will they play? Ethics guide choices and raise consciousness. It is all too easy to continue an unethical tradition of exclusion without question. Music is the coordinating and synchronizing influence in all societies. It is obvious that integration has to take place through music and in the way music is taught and presented.

is a 2 channel tape composition made at the San Francisco Tape Music Center. It utilises 2 Hewlett Packard oscillators, 2 line amplifiers in cascade, a turntable with record and 2 tape recorders in a delay setup. The composer arranged the equipment, tuned the oscillators, and played through the composition in real time.
"[It] bids farewell not only to the music of the 19th century but also to the system of polite morality of that age and its attendant institutionalized oppression of the female sex. The title refers to the operatic disc, Madame Butterfly by Giacomo Puccini, which was at hand in the studio at the time and which was spontaneously incorporated into the ongoing compositional mix." - PO Pauline Oliveros (Texas, USA, 1932)

life as a composer, performer and humanitarian is about opening her own and othersÕ sensibilities to the many facets of sound. Since the 1960s she has influenced American Music profoundly through her work with improvisation, meditation, electronic music, myth and ritual. Many credit her with being the founder of present day meditative music. All of Oliveros' work emphasizes musicianship, attention strategies, and improvisational skills.

Pauline Oliveros is a composer, performer, and educator based in Kingston, NY. She travels widely to present her music and Deep Listening. Currently she is the co-artistic director of the Pauline Oliveros Foundation, Inc., Distinguished Research Professor of Music at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Darius Milhaud Professor at Mills College.
She makes it happen at the "Happen'ns" with her innovative workshop:
DEEP LISTENING is a practice created by Pauline Oliveros to enhance her creative work and to engage with others. It comes from her childhood fascination with sounds and her work in concert music with composition, improvisation, and electro-acoustics. Deep Listening is connecting with the universe of sound and processing what one hears. In the Deep Listening Workshop, we will do some listening practice and a sound piece with voices, and process the experience with partner feedback and group discussion.

Pauline Oliveros - Alien Bog / Beautiful Soop
Pauline Oliveros completed Beautiful Soop (1966) and Alien Bog (1967) utilizing the original Buchla Box 100 series created for the Tape Music Center by Don Buchla and her tape delay system. "I was deeply impressed by the sounds from the frog pond outside the studio window at Mills. I loved the accompaniment as I worked on my pieces. Though I never recorded the frogs I was of course influenced by their music."

Pauline Oliveros - No Mo
"In the summer of 1966 I worked in the classical Electronic Music Studio at the University of Toronto for six weeks. The system I used to create No Mo and Something Else consisted of Layfette tone generators, noise source and tape delay. In the Fall of 1966 I was the newly appointed director of the Mills Tape Music Center formerly the San Francisco Tape Music Center and now the Center for Contemporary Music at Mills College. Bog Road was created at the Mills Tape Music Center in the Summer of 1967 with the Buchla Series 100 Box. The studio overlooked a pond where frogs were singing a chorus that inspired a series of Bog pieces."

Alcorn and Oliveros next did a dance of light, delicately prancing along as the steel bars met the strings and the accordion gushed out beams of brilliance. The union of Bickley and Oliveros was a fanciful dance of laser beams as well and was followed by the sweeping, long trombone lines of Dove moving in a linear direction while Alcorn interjected soft fragments of raindrops randomly plucked from the sky.
The culminating quartet session unitized the artists in an aggressive, take-hold posture. The quartet was one of contrasts - the high-end recorder piercing the shield of the basement-level trombone - the biting notes from the pedal steel guitar molding with the impeccably chosen accordion strains - darkness blending with the light - quietude vs. boisterousness - chaos meeting serenity - all forms of contrast presented themselves in this unique array of musicianship. The mouthing techniques used by Bickley brought out still more innovative sounds from his several recorders that further contributed to the diversity of the music. Oliveros coordinated a very satisfying solo, duo, and quartet program full of innovative spontaneity. She dedicated the program to her mother, Edith Gutierrez, a long-term music educator in Houston who was present to see her daughter excel. Many years ago, Jon Hendricks wrote a one-word jazz poem. He simply said, "Listen." Oliveros has expanded on that concept by promoting her philosophy of

The Space Between
(482 Music, 2001)
The Space Between by Philip Gelb, Pauline Oliveros and Dana Reason, plus Barre Phillips, is a CD I find hard to listen to for the most part. There are some beautiful pieces of new music on the CD, but there is a strangeness to the music and it is that edge I sometimes have troubles with. The musicians are skilled and very good at what they do. However, I am not always able to approach their music and understand it. In any case, they are Philip Gelb (shakuhachi), Pauline Oliveros (accordion), Dana Reason (piano) and Barre Phillips (bass). The CD starts off with "King Kong Passes Through the Gates of Shaolin Temple and Contemplates Life," a piece that sounds good at times and sounds like they are warming up at others. Don't ask my about the names of any of the songs, I have yet to make any connections between song title and music. In "Natto Breath," the various elements fit together smoothly to create a soundscape I can approach and enjoy. The next piece, "After Long Life," is also quiet and gently layered. "The Lonely Halibut" has a strange feel to it that leaves me cold. "Fantastic Increments" is likewise beyond me. Then comes "Penguin" with its fevered energy, and the music has lost me completely.
