Palestrina, Giovanni Pierluigi da
Palestrina, his name derived from his probable place of birth, was one of the principal composers of the late 16th century, his style taken as a model by later generations. His musical language represents the climax of musical achievement of the period, above all in his mastery of earlier Franco-Flemish polyphonic techniques, now used with complete assurance, particularly in the provision of music for the Catholic liturgy both before and after the reforming Council of Trent. Palestrina's career was largely spent in Rome, at the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the Cappella Giulia at St. Peter's and at St. John Lateran. Church Music Palestrina wrote a large number of settings of the ordinary of the Mass. Of these the Missa Papae Marcelli, popularly supposed to have been written to convince the authorities at the Council of Trent that there was still a place for polyphony in the musical performance of the Catholic liturgy, is among the best known. Missa Aeterna Christi munera, a Mass that makes use of the plainchant of the title as its basis, is a fine example of Palestrina's technical command, but a similar claim might be made for almost any other of the 100 or so surviving Mass settings. The very large number of surviving motets offers a similar embarrassment of choice. Palestrina's liturgical music also includes settings of the Lamentations for Holy Week, taken from the Book of Jeremiah, litanies, settings of the Magnificat and offertories. In addition to generally conservative Italian madrigals, he also wrote a number of five-voice Italian sacred madrigals.

  • "Prince of Music"
  • Associated with stile antico
  • Choirboy in Rome

Known as the "Prince of Music," Giovanni Palestrina was an Italian Renaissance period composer who wrote music almost solely for the purpose of the Catholic church. 104 Masses are counted among his works, as well as a vast 450 other sacred compositions. Within this religious category, Palestrina produced 250 motets , or choral works based on Latin texts. In addition, he wrote 50 spiritual Italian madrigals . Besides impressive technical mastery and great attention to detail, there is an aura of calmness and reverence present in his music. Although primarily associated with the church, Palestrina did write approximately 100 secular madrigals, which were compositions light in melody and harmony. However, these "sinful" pieces caused him much embarrassment, and he was reported as saying that he "blushed and grieved" to have written such works (Grout 251). To the world of musicians, the name Palestrina became associated with an element called stile antico , a serious style that served to represent all church music in the Renaissance period. Used as the model for

Palestrina served as organist and singer from 1544 in the city of Palestrina; he had begun his career as a boy chorister in the church of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, a city to which he returned in 1551 to assume the post of Maestro of the Chapel Giulia at St. Peter's. Palestrina was a member of the Cappella Sistina but was required to drop out when he married in 1555. That same year he became Maestro di cappella at the church of St. John Lateran, and the following year he became director of concerts at Cardinal Ippolito's villa. Palestrina composed 105 Masses , more than 250 motets Magnificats , other sacred music, and some secular madrigals . Bach is known to have arranged one of Palestrina's Missa sine nomine for voices and instruments.

He was a pupil of Mallapert and Firmin Lebel at St. Maria Maggiore, Rome, where he was a choirboy from at least 1537. He became organist of St. Agapito, Palestrina, in 1544 and in 1547 married Lucrezia Gori there; they had three children. After the Bishop of Palestrina's election as pope (Julius III) he was appointed maestro di cappella of the Cappella Giulia in Rome (1551), where he issued his first works (masses, 1554); during 1555 he also sang in the Cappella Sistina. Two of Rome's greatest churches then procured him as maestro di cappella, St. John Lateran (1555-60) and St. Maria Maggiore (1561-6), and in 1564 Cardinal Ippolito d'Este engaged him to oversee the music at his Tivoli estate. From 1566 he also taught music at the Seminario Romano, before returning to the Cappella Giulia as maestro in 1571. During the 1560s and 1570s Palestrina's fame and influence rapidly increased through the wide diffusion of his published works. So great was his reputation that in 1577 he was asked to rewrite the church's main plainchant books, following the Cuoncil of Trento's guidelines.

Palestrina, from which he took his name. Palestrina represents with Lasso the culmination of Renaissance music. In 1544 he was appointed organist at the cathedral in his native town. In 1550 the bishop of Palestrina became Pope Julius III and appointed (1551) Palestrina master of the Julian Chapel Choir. Palestrina's first book of masses appeared in 1554, dedicated to the pope. From 1555 to 1560 he was choirmaster of the Cathedral of St. John Lateran, for which he wrote his Lamentations, and from 1561 to 1566 he was choirmaster of Saint Mary Major. After several years in the private service of Ippolito II, Cardinal d'Este, he returned in 1571 to the Vatican to resume leadership of the Julian Chapel Choir. He was undisputed master of the mass, of which he wrote 105 for four, five, six, and eight voice parts. Best known is his Missa Papae Marcelli.
