The year was 1891, the centenary of Mozart’s death, the place a small village in the Ukraine, Sontsovka. Prokofiev’s father, originally from Moscow, was an agricultural engineer in this important region, his mother was, in Gliere’s words, "a tall woman with magnificent, intelligent eyes... who knew how to create around herself a warm, natural atmosphere." Having lost two daughters she devoted her life to music and spent two months a year in Moscow or St. Petersburg taking piano lessons. It was she who was the musical influence on young Sergei, beginning to teach him the piano at age 3. He wrote his first composition when he was six, The Indian Galop . After a trip to Moscow at age 8 where he was exposed to The Sleeping Beauty Faust and Prince Igor , he declared "I want to write an opera." Three or four months later he presented his parents with

Sergei Prokofiev
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Sergei Prokofiev April 23 March 5 ) was a Russian composer Sergei was born in Sontsovka (now the village of Krasne in Donetsk oblast), Ukraine , as an only child. His mother was a pianist and his father a relatively wealthy agricultural engineer. Sergei displayed unusual musical abilities at an early age and in , when he started taking private lessons in composition, he had already produced a number of pieces. As soon as he had the necessary theoretical tools he quickly started experimenting, laying the base for his own musical style. After a while the isolation in Sonsovka [Sontsovka?] started to feel restricting to Sergei's further musical development. Although his parents weren't too keen on forcing their son into a musical career at such an early point, in

Prokofiev, Sergey (1891 - 1953)
Sergey Prokofiev, precocious as a child, entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory in 1904, by which time he had already written a great deal of music. At the Conservatory he shocked the more conservative director, Glazunov, but learned much from an older fellow-student, the composer Myaskovsky. After the Revolution he was given permission to travel abroad and he remained intermittently out of Russia, in America and then in Paris, until his final return to Russia in 1936. At home, though in touch again with the root of his inspiration, he found himself out of favour with the authorities and in 1948 the subject of particular and direct censure. His death in 1953, on the same day as Stalin, deprived him of the enjoyment of the subsequent relaxation in musical censorship that then took place. In style Prokofiev is ironic, writing in a musical language that is often acerbic. Written by Prokofiev himself, this exquisite autobiography known as the 'long' autobiography unfortunately only covers his life up until July 1909. Written in two different periods spanning 1937-39 and 1945, the book is extremely well-written, meticulously detailed, and indispensable toward understanding Prokofiev's attitudes up through the Conservatory years.

Introduction (born Sontsovka, 23 April 1891; died Moscow, 5 March 1953). He showed precocious talent as a pianist and composer and had lessons from Glier from 1902. In 1904 he entered the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where Rimsky-Korsakov, Lyadov and Tcherepnin were among his teachers; Tcherepnin and Myaskovsky, who gave him valuable support, encouraged his interest in Skryabin, Debussy and Strauss enfant terrible , unintelligible and ultra-modern - an image he was happy to cultivate. His intemperateness in his early piano pieces, and later in such works as the extravagantly Romantic Piano Concerto no.1 and the ominous no.2, attracted attention. Then in 1914 he left the conservatory and travelled to London, where he heard Stravinsky 's works and gained a commission from Dyagilev: the resulting score was, however, rejected (the music was used to make the Scythian Suite ); a second attempt

    Biography
    Sergei Prokofiev
Composer Russia Born 23 Apr 1891
    Died 5 Mar 1953
Brought up amidst the music of the last century, Sergei Prokofiev quickly established himself as one of the most forward-looking young Russian composers of his time. His spiky, often aggressive, diatonic compositions are also surprisingly humorous. He and Dmitri Shostakovich managed to establish a new kind of Russian music without depriving it of any national flavour; however, being born adventurers, both fell foul of the Soviet regime.
Sergei Prokofiev was from an agricultural family in Sontowska in Ukraine. His mother taught him the piano and from an early age his musical ability was apparent. He had written a piano score for an opera, 'The Giant', by the time he was nine. The composer Sergei Taneyev arranged for his colleague, Reinhold Gliere, to prepare Prokofiev for entrance to the St Petersburg Conservatoire, and he was easily admitted. The composer Rimsky-Korsakov and Anatol Liadov took him for composition, and Nicolas Tcherepnine for conducting. Despite the fact that Prokofiev rebelled against the rigid system of the Conservatoire which went against his ideas of a new musical expression, he graduated in 1914, winning the Rubinstein prize of a grand piano after performing his own Piano Concerto in D flat.
Prokofiev toured in Russia, giving well-attended concerts in Moscow and St Petersburg, then went to London and Paris to experience at first hand the contemporary music of England and France. Exempt from war service, he was in St Petersburg when the Revolution began, and at first believed it would improve the lot of Russian musicians. Finding this was not so, he made a recital and concert tour across Siberia to Vladivostok, to Japan and thence to the USA. He was greeted everywhere. When he arrived in Paris in 1920, he was welcomed by the ballet impresario Diaghilev and the composer Stravinsky, who both tried to persuade him not to return to Russia.
