Ramzi Yassa Conductor Marc Poillet Event Director Maya Le Roux Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov (1844-1908) Rimsky Korsakov remains to this day a pillar of the Orientalist musical heritage, first and foremost through his work "Sheherazade". The Orient spun its magical web around him, as did the different aspects of Russia's own national traditions. He was to publish a collection of 100 of his country's folk tunes. His work resuscitates with great vibrancy, characters from popular poetry, old folk legends and the whole texture of oriental romanticism. His musical expression is at once limpid and inventive. The richness of his orchestration is insurpassable, which makes him stand apart among the great 19th Century symphonic composers.

    Rimsky-Korsakov,
    Nikolay Andreyevich
One of the Five, the leading group of 19th century Russian nationalist composers, Rimsky-Korsakov embarked at first on a career as a naval officer, following the traditions of his family, later resigning from the service to devote himself entirely to music. He was proficient as an orchestrator and set himself to smoothing out some of the apparent crudities in the work of some of his fellow-composers, completing and revising works such as Borodin's opera Prince Igor and much of the seemingly uneven writing of Mussorgsky. He was respected as a teacher, his pupils including the young Stravinsky. Most generally known for his orchestral compositions, Rimsky-Korsakov wrote songs and choral music, chamber music and works for piano. His textbook on orchestration has been widely if not always wisely used. Operas Of the fifteen operas completed by Rimsky-Korsakov, mention may be made of The Snow Maiden, The Maid of Pskov, The Tale of Tsar Saltan, Mlada, Sadko, The Legend of the Invisible City of Kitezh and the satirical and once banned Le coq d'or (The Golden Cockerel). Orchestral and instrumental excerpts from some of these may be very familiar, including the famous Flight of the Bumble Bee, from The Tale of Tsar Saltan, a prince who turns himself into a bee and stings his wicked aunts. Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov's life Rimsky-Korsakov's coat of arms Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov was born in a small provincial town called Tikhvin , 200 km from St.Petersburg. Tikhvin. Rimsky-Korsakov's house N.Rimsky-Korsakov's parents His family was unusual by the age of its members. At the time of his birth his father was 60, his mother 42 and his brother was already a naval officer and was 22 years old. In Tikhvin little Nika learned to play the piano. His parents noticed, that he made good progress and had a perfect ear. But they did not pay attention to this. At his parents will, Nika, when he was twelve, entered the Naval School at St.Petersburg to become a mariner following his brother. From that time he began to go to operas , s ymphonic concerts and acquired a passion for music. His new music teacher Canille noticed the musical gift of his pupil and told him he should try to compose music himself. Canille explained the general rules of musical composition, set him homework and soon introduced to the composer Mily Balakirev who was the head of a St.Petersburg musical circle. During the last year of his studies at the Naval School (1861/62) Nikolay began to compose a symphony. He was happy and dreamed to become a composer. But his mother and brother (his father died in March 1862) convinced him that a musical career would not ensure a sufficient income, and therefore he should become a naval officer. In order to do this, he had to embark on a round-the-world trip. In October 1862 Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov set off from Kronstadt as a gardemarine on the clipper "Almaz".

Armenian Dances (Part II) In his Armenian Dances , Alfred Reed has captured many of the styles, tempos, and subtleties of the Armenian folk songs and dances. Part II, performed today, was commissioned after the highly successful premiere of Part I and completed in 1977. The two parts comprise a full-length symphony. Reed, acting as arranger and composer, drew his inspirations from the vast collection of Gomidas Vartabed (1869 - 1935). Gomidas has been credited as the founder of Armenian classical music for his work on preserving and documenting over four thousand folk songs. The first movement of Part II is Hov Arek Come, Breeze

    Music History 102:
    Nationalist Composers
The nineteenth century was time in which passionate nationalism was prevalent and which saw many political upheavals. Influenced by such "nationalistic" works as the Hungarian Rhapsodies of Franz Liszt , composers from many European countries became determined to develop a "national style" of music for their homeland. To do this they turned to the dances, folk songs, history, and national legends of their countries as a basis for their musical compositions. Of the countries that fostered a growth of such a movement, Russia Bohemia (now part of the Czech Republic), Finland Spain England , and the young United States of America produced several outstanding nationalist composers.
